- In this video, Cromer Beach Battling Stormy Conditions, I captured a few decent images despite the brutal weather.
A couple of weeks ago, I headed to Cromer Beach in Norfolk with the goal of photographing the groynes along the seafront in a Fine Art style. However, that day was not ideal for such shots. The conditions were rough, with strong winds, rain, and a high tide that covered the groynes I intended to capture.
While this was disappointing, as a landscape and seascape photographer, you learn to adapt to the circumstances. And honestly, taking photos in stormy conditions can be great!
Spoiler alert: I went back the next day when the conditions were better and got the Fine Art shots I wanted. I’ll share that video next week!

Fantastic to see. Have photographed that area for a few years now and you are spoilt for choices! Trimingham Beach just up the road has some fantastic old, broken groynes and beating up breaker walks to photograph! Also the remnants of an old narrow gauge railway line!

Yup, that’s summer in Norfolk! There have been days when we’ve left from Bury St Edmunds in 28degrees, by the time we get to the beach it’s 18 with 5 degree windchill and you need a hoodie not a bikini….
It was pretty cold I have to say :)
How was the camera afterward? I also saw your doppelganger getting off a bike this morning in Wisconsin, I had to do a double-take to make sure it was not you.

Excellent video, that was some smashing waves you had there, especially the ones that came over the top of you hahahaha, only joking lol :).. Super work though, a lot of us photographers might have given up before we started if it was like that but you persisted and got some amazing images, they are making me want to go out and try to achieve something similar. Well done Gary, super video and I look forward to seeing part 2 :)
You might need an umbrella... with a clamp to erm.. clamp on to the tripod. - this is just my suggestion though, I have no idea if it will help or not, but they're relatively cheap.

I very much enjoyed watching your visit to Norfolk Overstrand, over the years. I've been there many-many times, I've never managed to catch what I consider the right weather conditions.
Finding myself now at 80 years of age and with many health problem’s, I find the walk back up the steep slope carrying a tripod and full frame camera and lenses to the car park very hard-work.
So on my last visit 18 months ago, I took a small light weight tripod and a Sony RX100 iii camera that had a Sony Play-memories smooth water app.
It turned out to be a bright sunny day with a clear blue sky, but I still managed to get a few what I consider very pleasing images.
I should like to send you an image to show you what can be achieved with a very small compact camera with the smooth water app.
I very much enjoy your fine art images and try to emulate your style, I very much appreciate the time and effort your videos take you, so just wanted to say thank you very-very much for all your hard work.
My style is slightly different to yours,( no way near as good).
I like both colour and black-and-white, the image I should like to send you has been edited in Photoshop, I have added a cloud and the groyne has been given a paint effect.
So please keep up the good work, and truly look after your health.

So fun to watch! How did your Z8 do with the water? I’ve been afraid to get mine wet. I always love your images, but not a fan of the metal railings! Most importantly, I always learn from you! Thanks for taking me along!
Norfolk coast is great but it probably cos I head that way about 4 times a year for music weekends. So, I get to shoot bands and generally 10 stopper groyne shots. 👍📸
This was brilliant. I got such a giggle from this video. Your enthusiasm and enjoyment in these conditions is what photography is all about 😀 Next time take extra cloths 😛
Great to see you down in my neck of the woods. Overstrand is one one my go to places, not only for the groynes but also you can get some great sunset images looking back to Cromer pier. Hope you've managed to dry out....whoever said the weather was always better down south.
Seagulls are usually the bane of my life when shooting slow groyne images 🙄😡👍📸

Gary, as a mere snapshotter with a tiny budget I'm amazed at the apparent lack of care that professional landscape photographers seem to have, amongst other things, for their equipment namely:-
a) clambering around with an expensive camera/lens combination without at least a wrist strap.
b) not using any protection for their camera in inclement weather. Surely a loose transparent plastic hood would reduce potential problems even if your system has weather sealing..
c) why a cable release whether physical or electronic does not appear to be used now. Ok, not so much an issue with long exposures but to capture the moment!
Note I'm just trying to understand your ethos not complaining or criticising.

To us, they're just tools. I of course love my tools, but I don't mind getting them dinted and knocked. It's too much of a fuff messing with covers and triggers. Cameras these days are pretty weather proof. 👍👍
@@GaryGough Thank you for your response. I'm not being facetious but am just trying to understand your mindset. I fully appreciate that for you and your peers they are tools. Given your predilection for sometimes extreme locations the potential loss of equipment overboard or down a cliff may just end up being an irritation to your insurers albeit at the expense of a day's shoot.

I am sure that I will not be the only one to say this, but standing on a Sea wall in the middle of a Storm is not a good survival strategy. As it's the beginning of Storm season here in Cornwall, we always get foolhardy tourists who venture that bit Too close to the action. Please be careful.

I absolutely love your videos. I love your enthusiasm and excitement!! This video as many of your others make me wanna rush out to the seaside and start photographing. But I live 4 hours and work a full time job, LOL. I wish I could afford a trip to the UK and just spend a week with you to learn and hang out. Because I know it would be one heck of a fantastic and exciting time!! Maybe one day I'll be able to make it across the big pond and do just that! Thanks so much for your videos!

When that cloth is dry, don’t use it. Salt crystals galore will scratch your filters to death. Wash it first.

17:10 is my personal favourite, I love what the hand rails add to that shot. The North Norfolk coastline is my favourite part of the county, you’ve awakened my mind for a return trip for a holiday to the area with this beautiful video, rain and all.
