Came here for neon text instruction, due to an offhand comment by Nick I learned that you can customize the letter spacing of any font in GIMP. And here I've been doing each letter manually when I don't like the default spacing. 10/10
Most tutorials I watched like this said Gimp in the tittle and then used Photoshop. This was very fun and this 100% Percent works (IF YOU FOLLOW EVERYTHING STEP-BY-STEP AND DON'T MISS ANYTHING)
Thank you Nick! I really appreciate all the GIMP videos you have made, I've gone from hardly being capable of even using paint to making semi-professional type of designs. Thank you again!
This tutorial is one of my favorites. Pure design awesomeness. I always thought they would use a plugin or a script or whatever, this felt old school. I'll try it out! Thanks for this, man.
Thanks Nick, I tried to make the neon a little brighter; so before messing with the BG I Edit > Copy Visible, Paste into a new layer and set the Mode to Addition. I am sure there is a better way. But I still like yours better.
Thank you for taking the time to teaching us the right way to do it. I would loke to know how you create the neon effect over the edges of an object or image as well. thanks again.
Thank you so much !! This is exactly what I needed with making my own RUclips banner/ thumbnails ! I tried to do so much on my own but couldn’t get anywhere thanks !
@@oldi184 We fast from sunrise till sunset, in that period we can't eat nor drink, after sunset we break our fast and eat normally; however, we wake up 20-30 minutes before sunrise to fill up and prepare for the upcoming fast :)
Adham Elmosalamy I have read that in SA before fasting begins they eat and eat and eat like gluttons. Utility services cant keep up with moving out the sheep carcasses from the big cities and especially Riyadh. There is so many of them. They kill dozens of millions of sheep during that time.
Awesome Tutorials I love inkscape and gimp after your lessons and leave the ai far and your teaching style is awesome.. Looking forward for logo animation for Branding and Identity Tutorial
For anyone on here asking how to make this transparent: something you can try that Logos by Nick or his copy cats have managed to put on RUclips that I have seen, is that the color layer being HSL Color makes it heavily reliant on the presence of black. So what you can try the NEXT time you do this tutorial, is add a black copy of your white letter steps. What this means is, when you do the stroke to selection layer make a duplicate of that layer, lock the alpha channel (little transparent box above your layer list on the right), and use your fill tool. Make sure "fill whole selection" is selection in your toolbox while the fill tool is selected. Then just fill in the white lines. You can try to make a couple duplicates of this layer and gaussian blur them, see if that is enough to suffice. Just make sure to deselect the lock alpha channel button before you do. Otherwise I recommend doing each layer repeated, but in black, and make sure to keep them toward the bottom with the white layers on top. See which one gives you a more brilliant glow/shine.
I'm not understanding your explanation. Can you maybe reword this so I comprehend it better? The last time I did this effect was when I was first learning and I was able to figure out how to get a transparent background but I can't remember at all what I did. Or is there a link that you can provide for a different tutorial showing what you suggested?
Create a new file with background set to transparent then go back to this and go Edit -> Copy Visible and then back to the new file with transperancy and paste.
Love your tutorials. I was wondering however could you now and again just explain what say, a layer mask actually and some of the other tech terms. Thanks
@Nick I love the neon, but i have a question. Is there a way to separate the neon effect from the black background? I noticed it's really dependent on the background and removing the background takes away the color resulting in only the white remaining. I just want the words, or at times i want a border with the effect. But i don't want it bleeding into my image. I've tried using a different background, but this just bleeds into the entire image. Using a Black background does only do the outline, but then im forced to use the black background. I've seen others ask this, but it was never actually answered from what i can find.
I have created the neon affect as part of a mock poster I am putting together. The neon lettering is in the centre and made from many layers. How can I successfully move the neon text intact, to the top right hand corner of the poster I am creating without breaking up all of the layers you need to create this? Thank you Nick. Amazing tutorial!
i know im two years late but hoping to accomplish the same results with a transparent background but it makes it pretty much disappear, i see a few other comments asking the same thing but with no answer, i hope you can shed some light on this as im planning on making a gif with them rotating to give pulsing/moving neon effect, i want it transparent like ive done with most of my stuff. thanks in advance! learned some stuff here!
Nick! I'll tell ya what... I was following along pretty well.... until we got to "HSL Color" in Layer Mode.... I have 2.8.10 - I'm thinking I might have to get to 2.10 - I did download it. But if you can say what the equivalent was in 2.8 I'd be grateful. Couldn't find it anywhere. But I should probably install 2.10 Great video... shed lots of light for me... very helpful...thanks man....
MrEd315 Yup totally... Soon after seeing this vid I installed 2.10... works great... and I was able to follow along and complete the neon tutorial... pretty interesting...good insight into using layers to create different fx with layer masks...there’s a lot I don’t know so this is all good info.
I made mine transparent by lowering the background down leaving some to it...I also used and played around with the smudge and blur tools and lightly erased some of the harsher patches with a very soft brush...if that helps any *shrugs* this is how mine came out... prnt.sc/re0n6y hope that helps some.
i tried this and was happy with the final product, but when i removed the black background, the colors and other effects seems to have disappeared. I am trying to export a neon icon with a transparent background, but it seems like that's not going to happen. Any tips?
Late I Know, But I have an alternative to raising color curves for giving the lighting effect would be; you up the opacity on the original text, then use gradient on the background, then change the mode to overlay.
Hey nick i love this one!!! Can you maybe please please dona tutorial for do the same but for cam overlays for twitch ? Or how to make a neon on a square i hope you understand what i mean
Fantastic tutorial! Once I've reached the end, I'm trying to remove the black background so that I have an Alpha channel. If I disable the background layer, I lose all the colour from my other layers. Any ideas?
GIMP was overwhelming until I found your tutorials. I actually enjoy making random things now!
relatable 😂
Cool! I am late to the party and recently started using GIMP. Subbed!

I used two logos by Nick tutorials to make a tshirt for my work :-)
holy wow this is genius. blending modes. I've read them but I only understand about 6-8 of them. This was a fantastic showcase of their power.

I love how powerful GIMP is but it's very intimidating. Thanks for making everything the experience enjoyable for us Nick!
the most mind blowing tutorial I've seen YET
I cannot stress enough how much your tutorials helped me in the past!

Your video was the only video which helped me, all the other videos were kind of old or they didn't explain it.
Thanks 👍
This is great! Any way to do it on a transparent background? I do book covers and need the transparency.
you can click on alpha to selection and than copy it on some transparent background
Create a new file with background set to transparent then go back to this and go Edit -> Copy Visible and then back to the new file with transperancy and paste.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm try it now and wanted it transparent from the beginning but nothing works so far

Fantastic video really helpful and well demonstrated, thanks very much.
Awesome tutorial! Perfect for the aesthetic of my Twitch and Patreon, thank you!!
Quick question, how would you do this with a pre-made logo, I get to the stroke selection part and it just doesn't work. :/
Wow. A really good movie. Respect

G'Mic plugin suite has a good blur for neon colour light glow called Focus Camera Blur , it better than Gaussian almost like lens flare
so helpful!! thank you! you made it so easy to understand

These vids are amazing. Gauss was a talented mathematician btw. Pronounced ɡaʊs
made it in a slightly different method but i like how you used 2 blurs at different opacitys.
uff... amazing tutorial.
Nick is there anyway to make this a PNG? without the black background?
This is great! I'm having a hard time figuring out how to duplicate this on a transparent background. It's not working for me. The colors won't show
