- Опубликовано: 2 дек 2024
- The new Hades Canyon NUC from Intel features an interesting hybrid solution of an Intel CPU with AMD Radeon graphics in a fairly small package, but how well does the NUC perform? In this review I’ve tested the NUC in 12 different games, and briefly compared it to a couple of laptops to give you an idea of where it fits in.

I am doing my uni assignment on this product and you were the only one that explained the purpose of this machine. THANK YOU.
Wow!
I've been using this device for 2 weeks now and simply loving every bit of it.
If you are a gamer buy a console.
but if you want a machine that doesnt scream GAMER and does decent graphics handling, is portable when u have monitors avialable at all your work points.
This is the machine.
i never knew those holes were microphones.
Thanks man. great review, love your lighting work.
Good to hear you like it, cheers!
Im pretty sure this outperformes the PS4 easily ! Why buy console again ? This is a gem !
do you still like it? did you get the hvk im considering getting it since im moving between countries and i have monitors and keyboards already in place. plz tell if you still like it!
Could you game and record/stream without a problem?
You can always pair it with a portable monitor and then you can use it anywhere with power
Effort appreciated.
Thanks Sam!
Great extensive review
Thanks!
Thanks for a good review. Even though I'm months late, I feel I must add. The graphics performance is handicapped by about 10% by only running single channel memory. The AMD semi-integrated graphics really requires you to maximize memory bandwidth (running dual channel 2400+ MHz) to see its full performance. Temps would be slightly elevated as well. It has its own internal memory, but not enough to load full game scenes.
Cheers! Indeed, unfortunately I didn't have spare memory to also test dual channel and this was how it was sent to me so wasn't anything I could do there.
How about gaming performance? I’m considering to buy this one also. Thanks.
Thanks for the excelent review.
I currently have a Thinkpad for work and coding, but I am missing doing some light gaming.
I am in the edge of getting this or a new laptop. I already have monitor + keyboard and mouse, so I think I will go with the NUC.
No problem! Sounds like a pretty sweet set up 😁
Hello, have decided to get nuc or went with something another?
Six 4K displays at 24Hz.
Source?
I love the idea, but I don't understand why it only has 4 core 8 threads in 2018. For the price, I would rather prefer to see 6 core and 12 threads.
Could be to do with the cooling, perhaps the extra heat the additional cores creates is too much when combined with the GPU? More is always nice though 😛
srsly tho a laptop is better in almost every case except if you want to "hide" your pc.
@@bananya6020 I have one that functions as a home theater setup, and a video game emulator for my living room tv. This is perfect for that. I don't keep mine hidden.
great such a detailed review all cheers to your hardwork amazing
Thanks!
How would feel about running the steam “vr ready” test on it?
That's a neat little system and pretty powerful too
Yeah that's for sure!
Not really, IMO. With 16GB ram and a 1TB SSD, it brings the base price up to about $900-1000 and for that, I expect more than gtx 1050 performance and an i7. I'd rather have a laptop considering my situation, so I think if they made the GPU faster even if I had to have an i3/i5... maybe gtx 1060 performance ish (of course I don't expect shadowplay and CUDA cores and stuff but like graphics wise
The performance is significantly better than a GTX 1050. It's moderately better than a desktop 1050ti, but not as good as a 1060. That said, it's still a niche product, and you're right that a laptop will make more sense for many people in this price range (self included). Hard to do better than this though if you want a small form factor HTPC/console killer that just sits behind your living room TV all day.
Great hardware but its just too skewed away from the price/performance balance. You can get either a better gaming laptop or assemble a better gaming desktop for around the same cost. In my opinion the only NUCs that are worth purchasing are those $200-400 meant as mini HTPC and even those I feel Intel is pushing a steep price due to lack of competition. If AMD was releasing NUC equivalents, that wouldn't be the case.
Yeah you're definitely paying a premium for the small form factor, I'd probably go for a laptop myself but yeah depends what you're after.
Great job with the video and review mate!
Thanks!
Wow, what a great review. You really touched on all the topics that are important to the end user. I'm actually considering buying this particular NUC for productivity+light gaming use. Have a few questions, though (TL;DR: about noise level in browsing/light workload and 1440p gaming without need for high fps at max settings).
Firstly, concerning productivity... Your noise test indicated that this NUC is pretty much silent when in idle (room AC would drown out the low noise coming from the NUC) and in your gaming test the noise levels sounded similar to the newest, more quiet PS4 Pro. What about the noise level in low workloads? Let's say a few browser tabs open and a RUclips 1080p clip playing. Is it closer to idle noise or gaming noise from your review?
Secondly, concerning gaming... You tested 1080p gaming but what about 1440p gaming at moderate quality? Is this NUC up for the task if you don't require +60fps at Ultra/Epic. For example, I've seen a clip of Witcher 3 being played at 1440p/High and the frame rates seemed to be playable (around 35-45fps). I only ask because I have a 1440p IPS monitor with Freesync and would love to play without scaling.
Thanks! From what I recall it didn't get very loud just browsing the Internet, probably close to idle levels. I'd expect the gaming test in my video to be similar to at 1440p, despite lower settings it probably results in similar GPU load, but I didn't specifically test that so just my best guess. Some games are probably fine to run at 1440p with lower settings, depends on the game, looking back now I'm not sure why I didn't test 1440p, must have been stretched for time when I had it on loan.
@@JarrodsTech Thanks for getting back to me on my queries. By the way, do you have any experience with mini-ITX custom PCs. I'm actually trying to decide between this NUC and a SG13 build with an RTX 2070 GPU (I see you've reviewed this GPU). With the latter I'd get more performance and upgradability but at the cost of a 10x bigger case (I'm the kind of guy who tends to choose smaller footprint). One deciding factor is the fan noise. On average, do you think mini-iTX builds with something like the RTX 2070 GPU inside are quieter than this NUC? Both have a lot of tech inside and not optimal airflow but which would be more silent on average.
UPDATE: Checked out your RTX 2070 review. Should've known you'd be as thorough as you were with the NUC review. =) The noise levels on idle (though you mentioned that the case fans were emitting noise as well) were higher than the NUC's (from further away if I remember correctly) were when gaming. While you weren't using a mini-ITX case (but a tower which has better airflow), this gives me some reference to what the noise difference between a NUC and a custom PC would be. Clearly I should go with a NUC if I don't have a high tolerance for PC noise.
@@johnorion496 no problem! I don't have any experience with mini itx unfortunately, I am interested in getting into it though as a bit sick of my large workstation PC. The channel "Optimum Tech" does a lot of small form factor builds and testing, worth checking out. My guess would be the NUC is quieter though. I also do the same system sound tests with all my gaming laptop reviews, so those might be useful as a further point of reference too.
Hey, John. Looks like our tastes are similar, I’m also considering this nuc for 1440p display. Have you bought it or some substitution? Could you share your experience?
@@YisName Yes, I did buy the NUC8i7HVK. I'm very happy with it. I bought Dell S2719DC 1440p monitor for it and together they form such a sleek-looking, compact setup that I don't miss my iMac at all.
The NUC is very quiet. I first had it set to Quiet profile via BIOS which made it literally inaudible (I say 'literally' because sometimes I get the feeling some PC folk with rigs that emit low but audible humming on idle say 'inaudible' when it's not) but changed it back to the default Balanced as it lowered the temps from 58-60 degrees to 51-54 degrees in light use. With Balanced I can hear a small, slightly high-pitched hum in a totally quiet room but it's so small that sometimes I'm not sure where's it coming from. I was very surprised that when I game in 1440p, the noise levels are actually surprisingly low, similar or lower when compared to a PS4 Slim. Bare in mind though that some have received units that have annoying fan rattle -type sound. I lucked out, I guess.
As for the performance in games... I have been able to play games such as Arkham Knight, Witcher 3 and Dark Souls III at 1440p with varying details. With Dark Souls III I didn't have to touch the settings at all. With Arkham Knight I lowered the details to Medium to get smoother action. Witcher 3 is power-hungry and I was getting around 35-45fps with Low/Med details. Bare in mind though that I have disabled Turbo Boost via BIOS . I did this to make this PC quiet but it does affect performance a bit (my Geekbench scores were somewhat lower than the scores of other Hades Canyon owners). Still, I feel safe in saying that even at 1440p I can throw any game at this NUC and make it very playable just as long as I adjust the details a bit and don't expect +60fps in power-hungry games like Witcher 3. I did play through Half-Life 2 the other week and got the max 75fps at 1440p with every detail setting maxed out.
A few other notes.. I went with Samsung 970 Evo NVMe 512Gb SSD M.2 drive and I advise you not to save money and buy a cheaper drive (heard people have had issues with Hades Canyon and Crucial P1 SSDs). I also went with Crucial DDR4-2666 RAM (2x8Gb) as you can go up to DDR4-3200 without the need to visit BIOS (although I've heard G.Skill RAM might require setting up). I went with Crucial value RAM as my research indicated that gaming/performance RAM isn't worth it in this setup.
Are the any cons? Well, the audio ports were noisy with my H/K Soundsticks 2.1 PC speakers. The ports were fine with my headphones but the speakers emitted audio interference which was really annoying. I ended up getting one of those USB DACs (Fiio K3) which fixed the issue. Bare in mind though that most likely this was speaker-related and some other speakers might work fine the audio ports.
All in all, I highly recommend this PC if you want something that is both compact and powerful. Yes, to some the price is high but I can't think of any other solution for the money where you get this much power in a 1.2L chassis that emits very little noise (no, a PS4 Pro does not count). By the way, the computer I was going for before I decided to get a Win10 NUC was the 5K iMac which costs around 2800-3000 bucks (including large enough SSD and 16 gigs of RAM) where I'm from. So I basically saved well over a thousand bucks.
Wow I've never seen something like this before. Great video btw
I hadn't either, and thanks!
how is the performance in 3D modeling and rendering softwares
like revit or vray or lumion??
I didn't test any of those sorry, the only CPU specific benchmarks I did were 7-Zip, Cinebench, Corona, Handbrake, Adobe Premiere, and Veracrypt.
hmm.. i heared that when you buy it you should buy somthing because its not fully pc. what are these things?
I faced no issues of doing any settings since i began using it. Update to the latest drivers and you are good to go.
Change cmos settings to ssd boot incase u use external drives.
The machine just works as expected from a high end pc setup.
I use Maya, 3dsmax, Unreal engine 4 with absolutely no hiccups, and better performance from my asus rog laptop.
I would advice to not use this as a rendering machine for extended periods as its more of a workhorse rather than a render farm node.
@@HeSo_71 RAM and SSD, don't forget the OS also Windows or any Linux distro.
Amazing and thorough review!
Thanks Jeremy!
I own three of these, recommend to everyone out there.....you wont be disappointed.
Nice?
@@JarrodsTech better than any laptop or PC I have owned before. Value for money
Honestly, the gaming and synthetic benchmarks could go higher, but it’s very easy to see from the graphs that memory bandwidth becomes an issue at higher settings. At least, that’s what I think is happening with the NUC.
I didn't really investigate that to be honest, but would have thought that the HBM2 would be better at that compared to traditional GDDR5 options?
It’s quite possible that the graphics drivers aren’t optimized for the setup either, but who knows.
Wondering if you can reverse the ventilation back to front. I would back mount it via Vesa mount, like to have me cables connected to the bottom but the hot air exhausted to the top.
So like opening it up and moving the board around? Not sure about that, but you could just mount it with either the front facing down or up I suppose.
yeay! i have been waiting for this one :D
Good timing!
indeed :D NUC would be perfect in an office environment .-.
same!
Yeah that's what I was thinking, not too many use cases realistically over other options though, pretty niche I think.
indeed it is._. anyhow, i do believe its implicit 'gaming' label does indicates its robustness (as for what i have experienced, products that are labeled as 'gaming' tends to be more durable). Said robustness would prove to be economical in an office environment :D
could imagine taking something like this for a lan party, runs cs go perfectly.
Hello i'm planing to buy this peace of hardware soon , so i can use it as a streaming pc and i have question can it handle streaming 1080p60fps ? just streaming i will be playing on my gaming pc !
I didn't test streaming so I honestly can't speak from experience, but given what I think about the quad core CPU I think it's probably up to the task, but maybe you can find more benchmarks for it too
You stated that the 2 NVME slots take different length NVME chips. That doesn't sound correct. I have used 2280 version in both. I think you are confusing it with a M.2 WiFi slot. The pictures you show seem to confirm both chip slots are the same length.
How it perform for editing 4k video, am really confused between getting a laptop and that small machine, was looking for Aero 17 and the concept d7? what do you think
I didn't try, but the specs were decent so I'd think it would go pretty well. I haven't used any Concept D stuff yet, still trying to get some, so I can't say at the moment. I've got a review of the Aero 17 on the channel if you need more info on that one.
@@JarrodsTech already watched your review about the aero,am yet scared on some issues with the laptops overheating also heard the aero not compatible with all RAMs am really confused to go for PC or minute PC or laptop.
Right now I'm using a laptop, but if I were ever to switch to a desktop solution I'd definitely go for a NUC, given it's tiny size and respectable performance. Just wondering, is there any difference in thermal performance with a vertical stand, rather than laying flat?
I didn't try that, however as it appears most of the intakes are on the front/sides I don't think it would make too much difference, but yeah not sure exactly as I didn't test that, sorry!
I doubt this is designed to be held vertically, but the vesa mount does allow for it, provided you get the ventilation right, i see no issues.
Excellent, very detailed review, as always. 👍
Thanks!
@Jarrod'sTech: Hi, what about heat and fan noise regarding this machine? Can you run two 4k Monitors with it?
There are lots of tower PCs all over campus I can just hook up too any monitor in the morning to do my online Hwork and during break, between classes.
Oh that's a pretty good idea! At PAX Australia the other week they had a ton of these hooked up to monitors as gaming PCs, at first I was like, where are the PC towers? Then realised they were all running off small NUCs 👌
Excellent review, beautiful machine if the price was a bit more reasonable. Thanks!
Yeah I know what you mean it's a bit high, thanks!
I'm mad man! I want to watch this video but I have work to do, AHHHH! And it's Hades Canyon, a massive step in architecture and a massive leap into new shapes and designs for pc or even laptops!
Watch at 2x speed 😎 that's what us real mad men do 😂
Nah too hard. I'll be true maniac! And watch it at 4x speed... hmm looks like youtube need to be re-coded for that.
Yeah if only, sometimes I do feel like 2x is too slow, depends on the video!
So I watched it at 2x speed. I'd say it needs 24gb of ram as when the 4gb of hbm2 vram runs out it'll rely on ram, lovely build quality! Nice and small and light! And IO galore!!! Also eveyrone now knows your unit's address, and it's cool that your sponsored by mwave, did you go to their little showcase? Room for oc? NOPE! temps are too high for cpu to bother. Due to no optimization from amd or dev's I wouldn't suggest buying it purely for gaming as the price for storage alone is high. Another great review Jarrod can't wait to see the next one! i9? Next gen helios? I don't mind because you do not disappoint!! Sorry for a rushed format comment.
Haha, so I have no idea what that address is which is why I left it there. It was originally sent by Intel's marketing company for something else that didn't end up going ahead so I just went with a review. I've seen Mwave doing some things around but haven't had a chance to check out anything yet myself. Still no word on when i'll have an i9 CPU unfortunately, Metabox N850EK / ASUS GM501 videos next up!
damn thought it was a DVD player!
Close 😁
I thought it was a laptop
a very chunky laptop
hey dude can you help me? i have a new pc with a 1080 ti and a i5 8600k and i get slow down in frame rate while playing Destiny 2 with a lot going on on screen. What can the issue be?
what resolution? How much ram? And what's the gpu, cpu and ram usage like, are you using a ssd or hdd.
What does resource usage for memory/CPU/GPU/disk look like when that happens?
Cpu maybe...
the i5 8600k with it's 6 core 8 threads should be fine paired with a 1080ti
temps etc.
Good detailed review!
Thanks!
How come this only has Bluetooth 4.2 while other cheaper nucs (like NUC8i5BEK) support BT 5!
Is that because the latter is newer?
I'm honestly not sure on that one, the same thing happens in laptops too, just depends what wifi card they install as that will determine the supported version of Bluetooth which does mean you should be able to swap out the m.2 card with a better one if you want it
Saw that you had a connector but did u get 144hz to work with the nuc and the connector together?
I didn't attempt it, at the time of testing I only had my crappy 60Hz monitor here.
Excellent video. Does the VEGA M GPU support FreeSync?
Thanks! Looking into it now, it appears that it does, although I didn't see a mention of it on the Intel site when I made the video which is why I didn't mention it here.
@@JarrodsTech do you think with slight overclock the gpu of the less expensive model will reach the same performance of the one you showed? Not sure if the power supply is the same for the 2 models though.
@@123OGNIAN Hmm honestly not sure, I don't have any experience with it, sorry.
I have a question. I have a 144hz monitor but I dont see a Display port on the IO of the NUC. Cam the mini display maybe run my monizor at 144hz?
DisplayPort/Mini DisplayPort are basically the same thing, just different connectors, should be the same in terms of the spec though. As version 1.2 is in use here you should be able to do 144Hz at up to 1440p: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Resolution_and_refresh_frequency_limits
Hi Jarrod , nice video and I like your addition of power draw. I think that is quite a relevant test and I appreciated seeing that. P.S. I just bought a Metabox Alpha-X N870EP. Keep up the good work.
great choice!!! Was slightly out of my budget when buying my laptop to replace my desktop sadly.
Thank you. It has yet to be delivered but it looks good with the latest i7 8750H. All the best.
Thanks! Sounds good, I'm finishing up my review of the N850EK for this weekend, hopefully I can get that one in the future too 😃
I probably never would have known about this champion aussie company without your interest in them. Thanks Jarrod and thanks for your reply. Good luck with your channel. I for one will be watching.
No worries, cheers!
What do you edit with? And what font do you use for the information?
I use Adobe Premiere, the font is Bebas Neue
Jarrod'sTech Thanks
No worries!
very informative video. Thanks.
No problem!
Can u make a tutorial on how to over clock
this pc is very interesting, intel with amd graphics on the same cheap, but i think he need do that in a laptop, much better with a little batterie and same cooling
Yeah you can get the same CPU/GPU in some laptops, hopefully I can get one of those to test with in the future!
yea very nice idea ! to see if they are more powerful or if it's the same performance and also to see the temp
Would this work for a hackintosh?
Thanks for including Dota 2 game benchmark (although it's replay) , great video btw!
No problem, cheers!
HELP for the m.2 storage sometimes i see 2 m.2 2280 ssds now I read 1 2280 and 1 2242, which is it? Thx guys.
Does the RX Vega M GH/GL support FreeSync Technology?
I think so but I'm also not 100% certain as it wasn't clearly listed on the Intel website.
Amazing like always :)
Thanks 😁
how you are respectful and a big muscle of info thanks alot you are amazing 5 star review
Cheers!
Will it be Silent When Doing Music Production ?
So could this be recommended for a first gaming pc?
It could be used for that, but for the money you'd be better off buying a traditional PC, better performance available, although won't quite be as small and portable as this, so depends whether you really need the small form factor.
thank you very much for this video.
No problem!
NUC really needs go down in price by a significant price
Interesting to see how it stacks up to the Ryzen APUs!
Yeah I'd like to test some APUs out in the future 😁
Jarrod'sTech collab with HUB?
They're too cool for me 😎
Nah man, loads of channels notice your comments, you’re always one of the first. You seriously could do a video with them! Your channel is amazing, and I always look forward to what you have to say. Thanks for the amazing content.
Cheers! Yeah I'd like to in the future, we'll see 😁
Benchmarks seems more appealing to be honest. Maybe someday we’ll have tiny power machines that can be kept cool easily
I hope so! That don't cost heaps of money 😃
Thanks for this review! Can you also make a video on how you overclocked the NUC?
Unfortunately not, this was borrowed from Intel and sent back after the review, so I haven't had it in some time. I probably just used Intel XTU to raise the clock speed of the CPU.
Is this device good for 4k video playback?
Yeah should do just fine.
does it work on 100 inch 4k tv?
Yes, as long as long as your tv supports DisplayPort or HDMI inputs.
Is it good for photo and Vedio editing?
Should be pretty decent based on the specs
can this run ps3 emulator? how does this compare to the xbox series x?
Are you going to review the new Razer blade 15 anytime soon?
I requested it the day it was announced, just waiting for the Australian team to have some review units available. No hard ETA yet, but hopefully in a few weeks.
Jarrod'sTech awesome, thanks for the reply!
So how does this compare to something like a dell g7 i7 8750H gtx 1060 max Q?
The 8750H / 1060 Max-Q would likely perform a bit better in most games, as for direct comparison you could probably look at the same games in a recent laptop I've reviewed with those specs, say the Dell G5, should give you an approximation.
Jarrod'sTech sweet, thanks bro.
No worries!
Can you go above 2400 speed?
I didn't try so not sure, sorry. The official spec only lists DDR4-2400 for the CPU though, don't know if overclocking is supported.
Can Someone enlighten me, does this supports monitors with 240Hz. Refresh Rates?
It's got 2 Mini DisplayPort 1.2 outputs and an HDMI 2.0a output, we can check what these specs support here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI#Refresh_frequency_limits_for_standard_video
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort#Resolution_and_refresh_frequency_limits
DP 1.2 should do 240Hz at 1080p, and seems possible at 1440p with lower colour quality, similar deal for HDMI 2.0. That said I have not tested running at 240Hz, this is all theory based on what the spec should support.
can I use SATA m.2?
Yes, the spec sheet lists: 2x M.2 SATA/PCIe SSD
Could it play 4k media ?
Like video playback? Yes.
@@JarrodsTech Super thanks! Will get one after my next paycheck :)!
do you think this could handle UE4?
Yeah should be alright, just my best guess though.
@@JarrodsTech thanks, is the cheaper model the same performance/specs if im not going to be doing any overclocking
If I recall the CPU is only just clocked slightly lower, the main difference is in the GPU side which has less compute units, haven't tested that NUC myself so can't really talk about how it compares.
Slight but important correction, the two M.2 slots, both support 2280 units, even the one that includes the WiFi module.
Nice review! Love this kind of config, but not rly for me x)
Thanks! Yeah I know what you mean, me too haha, the PC I run is huge as I don't really have a requirement for small 😛
Still waiting for razer 15!!! 😩
Me too!
They should put that vega M chip in laptops
I think they have! I've heard that it's in some Dell and HP laptops at the moment, hopefully I can get one for testing.
not really, I'd rather have a GTX 1060
i have no idea whats going on
Same
I just installed a intel wifi 6 chip and it works great!
Nice, good to hear!
great vid
Cheers!
Mini pc but can i plugged that to my phone??????? Im a mad man
Haha, to do what? Like you can connect your phone by USB, if you mean using the phone screen for the NUC then I am not sure on that.
Can you run cities skyline on it?
Probably
Intel are releasing a new nuc in early 2020
Oh cool, hopefully I can get it to test as well!
U left your address on the bottom of the nuc,in the video
It's not mine, as the NUC was borrowed and it came in a box I wasn't really sure if I should remove it or not so just left it.
why would i need 2 ethernet ports?
So you can connect to two networks, or otherwise combine the connections for 2gbit.
@@JarrodsTech ok, thanks. I dont think I have a use for that. Was wondering what a common use would be.
Yeah it's not a very common feature, more of an enthusiast thing.
performance on par with gtx 1060
Yeah pretty impressive!

Can I Join The External Graphics Card ?.
I'm honestly not sure as I didn't have an external enclosure when I made the video, I have one now but I had to send the NUC back a while ago. In theory it should work, as it has Thunderbolt 3 support.
