    We had a Newfie. The sheer amount of love from that dog was incredible. Just a couple warnings to someone thinking of getting one: as they video mentions, they shed… oh my gosh do they shed. And they drool. And they need to swim… I can’t emphasize this enough… they exist to swim. And they need cold in winter… preferably someplace with lots of ice and snow. Finally, they are stubborn. When 125 lbs of Newfie doesn’t want to do something, there’s really nothing you can do about it. But if you can deal with all that, you will love and be adored by these dogs every day you have one.

    We have an 18 month old Newfoundland, but have always had Rottweilors & Maremmas, so not new to very big dogs, but new to the drool! He's a goof and loves his family. Everything you said us spot on! We live near lakes & beaches and he's a natural in the water. Glad to have just found your channel.

    I lost my 2nd Newf last July to cancer. I also have had a Bernese Mtn Dog who dies early to cancer. Not going giant anymore, getting too old! I still have a Golden and an Aussie. Have deposit for next spring on an Icelandic Sheep Dog. So cute and smaller. Golden and Aussie are amazing dogs, love them both SO much!!

    Hi, I have had 5 of beautiful dogs, one at a time. It took me only 24 hours to house break a 8 to 9 week old puppy. The weights you mentioned are AKC / CKC standards. However one of my females was AKC and was very large at 165 lbs. she had a 4 great grandfather that weighed 225. The largest on record was 300 lbs and 6 feet long. My female normally would not bark. However a teenager came to our fence one day and she appeared out of know where and front paws on the top of the fence was strongly barking at the boy. Perfecting the kids in the yard. They’re also called the nanny bog.

      Omg that’s amazing! 6 feet long wow! That has to be a record for a Newfie. Thanks so much for sharing!

    We have had 3 Newfies … first one lived only until she turned 5 and passed because of medication that a veterinarian did not monitor correctly. Our 2nd Newfie lived to 11 year and a few months and she had to be put to sleep because both her back legs stopped working properly. Our 3rd Newfie just passed a year ago at 10 1/2 years old from Stage 4 Kidney failure which we believe was from long term use of a medication called Proin. We still have 3 Pomeranians and 3 cats and with us both in our late 60’s we are not sure getting such a HUGE dog at this age would be a good thing. So for now I get my Newfie fix by going to Newfie only dog shows and spend time hugging and patting them 🥰

    They are the best companion for some people but they have needs. They need a place to swim. They need regular grooming. They usually need to be withing 10 feet of their owner. We had 3 Goofy Newfies over a 25 year period. Everything you said is generally true but you missed one factor, they are funny. They have an incredible sense of humor and kept us laughing. They all thought of themselves as lap dogs. When the 165 pound Landseer climbed into my wife's lap she was trapped. Good Luck, Rick

      Richard, I'm so terribly sad to read your message. I can't imagine it as I know how much we loved our dog. But, the loss of my wife would cripple me entirely.
      Here in Newfoundland the arrival of ticks is very recent. Maybe five or six years ago the first ones were discovered. Our geography and climate kept them at bay until then. I was not aware ticks could cause fatal illness.
      So very sorry and kind regards. @@richardross7219

    I am owned by one now. she's 8 years old. I can't tell you the last time I had a hair free breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you are a neat freak, this breed is not for you. still haven't figured out how I get so much hair inside of the refrigerator. Seeing that I snore, I have probably inhaled and swallowed 2lbs of hair.

    • @dogjoy1
      @dogjoy1  Год назад +2

      They are considered lower energy dogs but they do need quite a bit of exercise (bc of their big body). They typically do not have a high prey drive but some of that will depend on getting them accustom with smaller animals at an early age. Great questions! Thanks so much for watching! =)

      @dogjoy1  3 месяца назад

      Haha sorry about that.

  • @thomaslawlor4200

    Where to start..............,
    Firstly, you need to work on your pronunciation of Newfoundland. Properly uttered it rhymes with understand, as in understand Newfoundland. NewFindland, Newfoundlound, etc are so incorrect and really, really irk the people who live here. In addition, the nickname Newfie is very offensive in these parts. Kind of like calling a person from Pakistan a "Packi" . Please refrain.
    Next, you say the dog was 'developed' for work with fishermen. Not so. Europeans pitched on our shores in the late 15th centaury. At that time, The Newfoundland was already established, probably welcomed visitors even then. No one had to "breed" them to achieve their abilities. Those were innate
    You mention Labrador in the video. The Newfoundland Dog has zero connection. to Labrador. However, in the early 18th century, fishermen were wishing they could have a short haired and slimmer Newfoundland. Pulling a 180lb dog over the side of a small boat was dangerous. Locals bred Newfoundland's with a smaller dog called The Saint John's Water Dog to achieve this.
    Eventually, the result was a short haired, smaller dog. Perfect. It was named The Lessor Newfoundland. In the late 19th hundreds, a British military man, stationed here discovered this dog. He realized this dog would be popular in Europe and renamed it The Labrador.
    The rest is history. There are many breeds who owe their existence to The Newfoundland.

      By the way, the Dog used to blend with The Newfoundland was The St. John's Water Dog, not The Saint John's Water Dog. And, unfortunately, it is now extinct. @@dogjoy1

    • @thomaslawlor4200
      @thomaslawlor4200 10 месяцев назад +1

      OMJ, now I'm embarrassed ! People mixing-up Saint John NB with the city where I was born (St. John's NL), are high on my list for those needing correction. And now, here I've made the same error. Sorry. I think I had a "mental" fart......................
      I knew The St. John's Water Dog is, sadly, extinct. I'm pretty sure responsibility for its demise can be laid at the feet of the government who ruled in the late 1800's. I've searched and have only been able to find one photo of an example of the breed and can find zero information concerning that Dog. My knowledge of the "birth" of The Lessor Newfoundland comes from a book written in the 1950's (or, maybe the 1940's), authored by the man credited with saving the breed here in Newfoundland. Interestingly, this same person is also credited with inventing the gas mask when he worked as a Battle Field Dr during The First World War.
      We miss our big boy still after fifteen years.
      Thanks for pointing out my mistake.
