    The problem with having a dog that’s too friendly with other dogs is that the other dogs aren’t always friendly.

    • @rvdb7363
      @rvdb7363 Год назад +61

      Our Newfie was a big baby. Friendly to all dogs and people and even bowing in submission towards the neighbours jack russell who was literally just 10% of his size and weight. Like Doug he seemed to have no idea how big he was. Especially when he wanted cuddles. You'd sit on a chair and he would try to get his 70 kg on your lap, seemingly confused that he didn't fit.

Although they were huge and their fur made a mess of our work space, they were both big 'ol babies. There was this one time when I was walking my dog - 20kg, the same height as my knee - and an off-leash irish wolfhound starts walking towards us. The owner was near and calling for her dog, but no reaction. Thankfully the dog was kind and calm and just came up to me for pets, and my dog rather hid behind my legs than tried to fight this pony-sized pupper. Her head was at my chin.
    Sooooo... Train your big dogs. Even if they are friendly, if they approach a dog that is aggressive or just scared, things could go really wrong. Or if they approached a person who is scared of dogs! It is truly inconsiderate to not train your dogs (size doesn't matter really, just more important the more damage they could do). And it is borderline stupidity to let your untrained dog off-leash.
    Good on this family to get help, but honestly. They got a dog that was gonna become massive. They should have gone to training classes when he was still a puppy. Or well, a smaller puppy.

I've had to work hard on Ichinojo to keep him from randomly jumping on people he meets for the first time, and since he'll weigh about 70-80 kilos when he's fully grown that's of vital importance that he be trained properly..

    I have a 7 year old French Spaniel, and I have struggled with leash pulling ever since we got him. Because Caxton is hyper-aware and impulsive, he pulls very strongly and can be unpredictable, because he can suddenly lunge forward to sniff something that we are not aware. I have tried many things: stopping and waiting until he releases tension on the leash, including the random walks (with sudden turns and stops) and the dual anchor leash. The dual anchor leash has not been very useful to us, but the random walks help to re-focus him. However, even over several months of applying this method, I have not had any durable behaviour changes in his attitude. What I have noticed that really helps is awarenes of his state of mind before we head out the door. Closing the door if the dog wants to bolt out the door is very effective at curbing impulses and sets the stage for a smoother walk. At the end of the day, I treat my dog like I would a child with ADHD, in other words, I accept that I cannot change his nature but can use strategies to make our walks more pleasant for both of us, and I no longer feel like I failed as a dog keeper.

    I love newfs. My family has one (Ozzy) he is the best. Great with my 2 boys, very gentle. The only thing he’s done is accidentally knocked them over when playing but with training he’s doing better. Also he has bad separation anxiety. We actually would love another one but we live in a small house.

    I had a one of these dogs as a kid she was amazing but boy she needed exercise and me being an 11 year old girl trying to walk a giant dog never worked lol she’d take off running and I’d end up being dragged. But she was a dream otherwise lol but everyone was terrified of her cause she looked like a bear.

    Gee, a stubborn Newf. Who'd have guessed? 🤣
    You've given me a fabulous tip: two leashes. My Shelagh's harness has the two D-rings and I have a second leash (in anticipation of a second dog), so I'll get started on that tomorrow--MANY thanks because I'm having problems with my exuberant (Landseer) Newf, too ("only" 129 lbs.). One difference is that if anyone comes to the door who doesn't actually enter the house regularly, my girl gets defensive, even if she knows the person and is his/her buddy on the street. I don't want to correct that--I really like that despite being a Newf, she acts like a LGD sometimes (she even herds guests). I'm a small woman alone and I figure we should be taking care of each other.

    Duggie is so lovely and sweet. I love large dogs with innocent faces. ❤
    I always wonder how much a dog pull add to its weight. I have 3 small dogs, total weight only 17-18 kg. I can handle that. But my neighbors have a labradoodle that weighs about 22-23 kg, I couldn't handle him when he lunges. So I can't imagine a 75 kg dog.

    Quite interesting how dogs can tell your gender, health, emotional state, by sniffing in the personal place on a human's body. I had no idea!

    I once had a massive Labrador with tremendous strength. He was very sweet but would take me "skiing" on the roads whenever we saw another dog he wanted to be friends with. Have decided to stick to smaller breeds now.

    I’m sorry lol as a Canadian (Ontario) I can’t get over that pronunciation of “Newfoundland” I swear Newfies are the nicest ppl until you pronounce their province wrong. It’s “newfunland” don’t pronounce the “found” unless you want to be found under a rock hahah
