I'm recovering from knee replacement. Since day 2, I've been working with a physical therapist. At 6 weeks I'm very happy with my progress.

I had a knee replacement and was told by surgeon - it is much more difficult than the two hip replacements you've had. He said you've got to get as much bend as soon as you can . If you can't get 90 degrees you may have to go back to hospital and it will be physically bent. I got there and have as much bend as the other knee.

You didn’t say where you had your surgery, how long ago it was, how long until you attained full flexion, what degree of flexion you attained, or how old you were at the time of surgery.

I was started on this morning after surgery. Straightening the leg was paramount.

You can also add a strap on weight which attaches around the leg immediately above the ankle, as you progress. Also sitting at 90 degrees adds to the overall effort, build up to these things, it's all about little by little

It would also be helpful to flex the opposition hip and knee at approximately 90 degrees to prevent low back complications.
Also what exercises do you recommend to help this particular patient to reduce her visible knee flexion contracture?

@@machellesullivan1130 I'm doind better. Just had my 15th left knee surgery. During a surgery in January, on my left knee, I contracted an infection, which is why I had my 15th knee surgery on March 1st. 6 weeks of a PICC line and now lifetime on oral antibiotics, to make sure to keep the infection away. Thank you for asking.

As someone who has multiple knee operations, and also have been advised by Dr Bellemans in the past. This exercise(in the video) focuses om the front top part of your leg. Since it is important to have balanced muscles, also the back of the leg can be strengthened by pressing with your heel into the mattress, and after a couple of seconds releasing pressure. You can flex your knee slightly during this exercise. Another variant of strengthening your hamstring is to first push your heel down into the mattress, and while keep pressing down with your heel pull the knee towards you dragging the heel along the mattress,as far as your knee flexion allows without any pain, and with keeping the pressure.
Sides of the leg could be strengthened by doing lateral leg raises(can be both moved away or towards towards the insude of your body). These can be done lying down or standing up. A resistance band around the knee or lower leg can help. Lateral raises focus more on the muscles around your waist, but with a resistance band around the lower leg or heel they also tension also tension front and back of the leg a bit. Try to not hurt yourself, building up strength is a slow process.
After a while you could progress by just trying to stand on one leg, not hyper extending the knee but slightly flexed, and just balancing yourself (you could use a wall or chair to balance yourself if necessary).

I have had both ACL's reconstructed and have developed severe arthritis in both knees. I am currently waiting for my right knee to be replaced, my question is ,how would I be able to do step up excercises or even squats ?
