#ThankYouAbroadInJapan First off, CONGRATS ON A MILLION! I've been a proud fan with a passion for Japan (that rhymes) since 2014. Since the start of high school, I've developed with a lifelong passion of some day exploring japan, and becoming a game designer, capable of inspiring players with an interactive story of the ages (Like a new Final Fantasy)! As of today, I am in my first year of college perusing these very dreams, with so much more to learn. I couldn't think of a question for the life of me, so I think this a more fitting response. I just want to say thank you for being such a significant pillar in giving my life such an incredible sense of direction starting at the young age of 14. From what I've seen, RUclips is a way for creators to share their inspirational videos with a world of people ready to be inspired. And in my opinion, you're paving the way for the rest of the world, as well as myself. I hope I can inspire peoples' lives in my own way, just have you have in your way. For that, I once again say, thank you!
#askabroad : What do you actually do now? Does youtube cover your living costs? If yes, do you think it's sustainable? Do you have a long term plan? Stay in Japan forever? Have a family? Progress the career somehow? I have been following you for a long time, and was just wondering whether you are doing ok in your life in general. Hope this question is not too personal :) I recently quit my job to put myself into "you can become anything" position again. I can easily live from savings for some time until I figure something out :) One of the stimulants would be a trip to Japan in October (for the second time)!
The onset of a panic attack (especially if you've never experienced them early on in life, or for the first time) are absolutely terrifying. Especially because you don't know what's happening. The first time I had one I thought I had been poisoned or was going into a seizure or diabetic shock and called 911. Then afterward, the memory of the experience messes with your psychology and constantly threatens to destroy your confidence in certain situations. But I'm glad that you got over it, breaking the mental shackles that can trigger such episodes.
You just come across as an all-round nice guy and kind person. I discovered your videos a few days ago ( I’m coming to Japan in March , and researching everything out there incessantly ) and am addicted . It’s the first time I’ve actually had the patience to watch an entire video . I really like that they’re funny without detracting from the information being given. Thanks for sharing, and keep up the good work...cheers from the land down under
Dude you described panic attacks so accurately. They are absolutely horrible and can 100% agree that I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I've been going through it myself recently, and you constantly fear when the next when will happen. So good to hear that you overcame the challenges in your way and made it happen man! Keep it up!
A hero without a cape, this guy is my favorite youtuber......i swear he's the only one that keeps me smiling, laughing, and entertained when i watch his videos..thankyou for everything..congrats on the 1 million subs ...you deserve that and more..

Chris, you are truly an inspiration! It’s so refreshing to see a positive RUclipsr in a generation of self centered egotistical whiners. Thank you for sharing your life, reflections and wonderful wit. I really look forward to your videos.
Hey man, this video is on point. I've been depressed these past few months and I've decided to change my life for the better like how you changed yours. Watching your videos helped me with my situation and when I am feeling down, your videos genuinely makes me happy. I hope life gives you more blessings and thank you for the smiles that you've given to your viewers.
#askabroad Dear A Broad in Japan, How come there aren't any videos of Natsuki and Ryotaro together? Are they mortal enemies, or would they be just too much awesomeness in one video?
Anyone who has gone through having panic attacks, understands what that is like and the huge fear you have to work through. It's amazing you got through that to follow your dreams :) very inspiring.
#AskAbroad not really a question, i just want to let you know that you've inspired me to step out of my comfort zone. that being said, i've got a student visa and i'm moving to Japan in April. hoping to bump into you there. cheers, mate!
#AskAbroad What are your long term plans? Are you planning to live in Japan for the rest of your life? Wife and kids? You know, do the whole life thing.
Not everyone considers a spouse and children vital to "the whole life thing". If you're living an interesting, fulfilling enough existence, you can be perfectly happy with just your friends and yourself (and a cat. having a cat helps, too).
Love your videos mate. Your calm delivery, steely British wit and wisdom is very refreshing. I was once living abroad too and your content resonates with me. Don't ever stop making videos and I'll never stop watching them.
I am very impressed how you managed to win this speech contest. You are so right about not giving up. Kudos to you - and thank you for the inspiration.
#askabroad 1 - Natsuki vs. Ryotaro Death Battle: details please? 2 - Coming to America? When, where, to do/ experience what? 3 - "Foreigner" dating / marrying Japanese woman: pros, cons, personal advice/ experiences? Congrats on tier 1M! Keep going! Also did you get my expert advice on cycling? Cheers, AJ
1. HA. Perfect. 2. If you mean for a person coming to America and you are asking what they should do, I can chime in some there. As someone that lives in the US and has lived in the US (so far) my entire 24 years of life, I can tell you the first thing you need to know about the US is...well the US is big. Really big. REALLLLLLY big. People that are familiar with smaller nations kind of assume that America is this "one thing" and that is simply not true. America is such a physically large country that people in one area of the country are dramatically different from others and you honestly need to learn about the area in the US you are going rather than general US advice because....there is no "general US advice." What is acceptable in, say Virginia is different from what is acceptable in, say California. You will find people have very different values and morals as you look at different areas of the US. It is the 3rd largest country by land area and unlike larger countries that are mostly populated in small areas with the rest being frozen much of the year, the US is fairly populated all over. It leads to a lot of different kinds of people if you get what I mean. Second, if you do visit the US (and this goes along with how large the US is) do not expect to see it all. It is so big, you really need to pick just one or two states and visit a few sites in them. Hell, ONE CITY can sometimes be tough to see all of *cough* New York is like this...so, do not expect to see the whole US in one visit. Do not even expect to see like 1/100 of the US in one visit. It is just geographically impossible. Finally, and this kind of just goes for any traveling...just do not talk about politics. Just don't. Even people that live here get sick of it. So...just don't. XD 3. This I too find interesting, but...well I think it comes with some issues doing a video on. XD
I mean this is not on the same level as you but moving from Devon to London was the scariest things I’ve ever done and had no idea how I’d be able to afford. Now 3 years later and with a lot of hard work it was the best thing I ever did! Great video as always mate 😊😊😊
I still come back to this video sometimes for the rare moments of vulnerability and honesty and growth that shine through Chris. Usually I'm here for the fun jokes and informational videos, but this one really inspires me and picks me up. Especially the speech contest story. Thanks Chris :)
You have inspired me to follow my ambitions and in two weeks I will be living and working in Japan for six months, i'm only 19 and it can be scary but your videos help put me at ease. I'm really glad I found this channel, It helped me realize that opportunities can come from anywhere as long as you put yourself in a position to find them. Here's to another million!
Chris, Congrats on 1 million subscribers and 6 years of experiences. Also thanks for sharing the wisdom you've gained over the last 6 years. Welcome to getting older. :-) #askabroad: Did your award winning speech on always wanting to become rich, also include some wisdom that "riches" can be measured in more ways than how much money you have in a bank account? Hopefully, you've figured that out already. Keep up the entertaining content here on RUclips. Here's to your 2nd million subscribers.
Haha, yeah it was a fairly sarcastic speech talking about how once I moved to the countryside in Japan, all I cared about was just living a fun life full of random experiences. All my previous dreams became irrelevant.
Dude, your videos have made me so much more interested in visiting Japan and exploring a different country or culture myself. I've been following your videos for a while and your editing as well as your excellent footage and humor have made these videos so immersive. As if I have been living your experiences, through your videos. Phenomenal work. The sights, the activities, the people... all phenomenal. Keep doing what your doing as long as it makes you happy. They've definitely made your audience happy!
4 years late, I came here to say that the 'Man Bread' is actually 'german bread'. The Ger is on the level above it, and they just 'snipped' german in half.
#AskAbroad Do you think you might have oversold the likelihood of our questions being answered? You have 1 mil subs now, that's still going to be a ton of questions asked. Congrats btw!
your 1st failed speech attempt then 2nd successful attempt is pretty damn inspiring. it made your future ted talk surmountable. the fact you moved to another country not to mention an entirely different language is courageous in the first place. I love this channel.
Man, I've been subscribed since you had like 2-3 videos uploaded. I never thought you'd make it this big when I started watching your videos but I loved the humor from day one.
Dude! Buddy! I'm not saying this so you can pat yourself on the back and slack off a bit; Your story and mentality is extremely inspirational. Thank you for the good you bring. Keep on!
Chris I discovered your channel in August (terribly late, I know) and I've been binge-watching/listening your videos/podcasts for hours on end. You are easily one of my favorite RUclipsrs ever and congrats on your 1M subs! I dont really have any great questions for #AskAbroad but well as a big fan of movies myself, I noticed that you once twitted that you wanted to make a separate channel for reviewing movies. So I'm curious what kind of criteria/quality you seek when watching a movie? And what are your top 6 (your go-to number) films of all time?
I so appreciate your insights, Chris! The idea to turn hateful comments into something funny is genius. Thank you for the vulnerability in sharing your story and great tips!
I've actually been keeping a word document for this very opportunity! 1. What did you take with you when moving from the UK to Japan? 2. Did living in your first Japanese apartment force you to “downsize” how you live (or did you not keep much stuff to begin with)? 3. Do you feel adapting to the Japanese lifestyle has changed how you view belongings and acquiring “stuff”? 4. Would it be accurate to say that by many people having smaller living spaces and less room to store personal belongings, they are more inclined to go out and make memories and have experiences outside the home? 5. Do you pay much attention to your local news and politics or follow what’s happening in the UK? Do you experience a sense of being slightly separated from or unaffected by Japanese politics as a westerner? 6. Have you had Natto? If so, what’s it like and would you do a video on it? 7. What is Japan’s health and fitness culture like in comparison to the west where we have the extremes of obesity and gym junkies?
You’re honestly amazing and so impressive. Before Covid, I had a Japan teaching job lined up. It’s all stopped now (because they all seem to have put hiring on hold) but eventually I’ll keep trying. I really hope I can make my experience half as rewarding as yours.
Great video. Did you ever got axienty by NOT doing something, or NOT living a new life somewhere else etc? I think I am experiencing that, like axienty of being stuck or not moving forward as you would like
You're right. I feel like I am on the right path, but maybe not with the right mindset. I'm trying to actively change that by putting my 100% effort into what i think would better my life, instead of growing anxious over not doing it and putting it off. Booked my flight to Tokyo a couple days ago btw! Keep up the inspiring work!
@@riccardomoscatello2030 Right now, I just don't know where I left that 'right mindset', I have a feeling I had that years or decades ago, now I totally lost it. Still hoping on findin' it, wish me luck.
Such a great idea! I used to think that it's so weird Christ's been living in Japan for 6 yrs but still can't pronounce Ryotaro's name correctly. Never knew that he's actually done a full 15-min speech in Japanese. I'd be so excited to see him do this.
Atlanta, GA (US) here. I find your content to be very amusing and have spent many happy pandemic hours learning about Japan through the eyes of a Westerner. Keep it coming!
hey. I moved country this year and likewise it gave me the worst bouts of anxiety I've ever had in my life. I'm glad things worked out for you in the end, as they also did for me. it's hard.
You have no idea how helpful this video is, Chris. I had no idea that what I've been suffering for the last 5-6 months is "panic attacks", I am going through a huge transition in my life and I didn't really think it's affecting me negatively, I've bought a new house and I'm getting ready to move out of my parents', which should be a huge achievement, esp. in my country where a large percentage of men of my age will probably never own a house. But, now I realized that I'm actually terrified, lol. It makes it a lot easier to know what's wrong with you in order to feel better, I thought that I'm losing my mind and that I'm depressed for reasons I will never know. Thank you, Chris. I feel a hundred times better now because of you.
You are such an inspiration man! Ted ex talk, being a teacher for 3 years in japan, escaping UK to follow your dreams. And now you are here making videos in japan doing what you like, so much respect man! I will be 3 aug in japan first for the time, i started watching your videos to learn about japan, but now i am just watching you and your opinoins about things and your road to succes. You are a great guy, wish you lot of luck and happines. Dont mind my bad engelish , i am from Amsterdam
You do not 'escape' from your comfort zone to 'follow your dreams'. You are dragged kicking and screaming out of your comfort zone to develop your character in spite of your nightmares.

I hope you are OK and safe from the earthquake from last night
The way you flip those negative comments are absolutely brilliant! By far, this is the most serious, promising, remarkable and this is my favorite vid of yours! It brings tears to my eyes! ❤️
This is exactly what i wanna do with my life and i am 14. Its like you read my mind and then wrote that comment!
Damn that’s relatable as hell.
I am a game designer who has moved to Japan - make sure you learn Japanese to N2 or N1. It's very hard to find game design work in Japan without it.
Hope this question is not too personal :)
I recently quit my job to put myself into "you can become anything" position again. I can easily live from savings for some time until I figure something out :) One of the stimulants would be a trip to Japan in October (for the second time)!
A new Abroad in Japan video came out, this is a good day
The onset of a panic attack (especially if you've never experienced them early on in life, or for the first time) are absolutely terrifying. Especially because you don't know what's happening. The first time I had one I thought I had been poisoned or was going into a seizure or diabetic shock and called 911. Then afterward, the memory of the experience messes with your psychology and constantly threatens to destroy your confidence in certain situations. But I'm glad that you got over it, breaking the mental shackles that can trigger such episodes.
i cant believe beatboxing was the secret to being a teacher
anything other than the sanitized Japanese culture is the secret to success in japan.
This music teacher approves.
This man gives me hope in humanity
not too much....
but he does
You just come across as an all-round nice guy and kind person.
Keep it up!
A hero without a cape, this guy is my favorite youtuber......i swear he's the only one that keeps me smiling, laughing, and entertained when i watch his videos..thankyou for everything..congrats on the 1 million subs ...you deserve that and more..
wow... can't believe it's already been 6 years. I subscribed to this channel when I was 15, I'm 21 now :') time flies
congrats on 1 million subs! keep up the great work
same! he's gone so far, it's sad some of his original videos have disappeared , I'm 20
wuuuuw you guys are real ones! I subscribed when i was 22, and now i'm 22!
Ayyy I turn 21 in December and I also subscribed when I was 15.
#AskAbroad Can you do a video spoken entirely in Japanese but with snarky english subtitles?
What's snarky?
YES!
I need this in my life!
I would love to see this. PROVE YOUR SKILL!
I second this one
Chris, you are truly an inspiration! It’s so refreshing to see a positive RUclipsr in a generation of self centered egotistical whiners. Thank you for sharing your life, reflections and wonderful wit. I really look forward to your videos.
#askabroad Do you plan on staying in Japan till your older years? Or do you have other places in mind to live in?
When in doubt, watch "School of Rock" and all your questions will be answered
You are a funny, relatable and genuinely helpful guy. Ignore the haters. Your videos are great! Keep up the good work
Hey man, this video is on point. I've been depressed these past few months and I've decided to change my life for the better like how you changed yours. Watching your videos helped me with my situation and when I am feeling down, your videos genuinely makes me happy. I hope life gives you more blessings and thank you for the smiles that you've given to your viewers.
#askabroad Dear A Broad in Japan,
How come there aren't any videos of Natsuki and Ryotaro together?
Are they mortal enemies, or would they be just too much awesomeness in one video?
Same person.
hahhahahhahahhahhah
yeah i am looking forward to that too
Someone must hold the camera
Lol i rhink i just watched a video of them too together on the nightlife etiquette video
#AskAbroad Will you ever feature Natsuki and Ryotaro in the same video?
YES, THE TWITTER CROSSOVER SHOULD BE REAL
Theyre alternative peesonalities off course not, that would he impossible.
One of the most positive RUclipsrs I've ever had the pleasure of following since last year. Kudos!
VergilHilts oh hi, Mark xD
Oh hi, Danny!
Well I mean it would certainly have an impact on his day to day life and that could change the style of the videos, so it's a valid question.
#askabroad
1 - Natsuki vs.
XD
3. This I too find interesting, but...well I think it comes with some issues doing a video on. XD
#askabroad
Congrats! Can't wait for the epic bike ride across Japan!
I mean this is not on the same level as you but moving from Devon to London was the scariest things I’ve ever done and had no idea how I’d be able to afford. Now 3 years later and with a lot of hard work it was the best thing I ever did! Great video as always mate 😊😊😊
Hi Roly.
Nice :)
I still come back to this video sometimes for the rare moments of vulnerability and honesty and growth that shine through Chris. Usually I'm here for the fun jokes and informational videos, but this one really inspires me and picks me up. Especially the speech contest story.
Thanks Chris :)
Ryotoro the movie is a cinematic masterpiece, and also the first thing that has ever made me laugh during a hangover! 10/10
Honestly you are by far my favourite RUclipsr! So much love and appreciation for this video
Same goes for me , wanna work in Japan as well everything there surprise and fascinates me
You have inspired me to follow my ambitions and in two weeks I will be living and working in Japan for six months, i'm only 19 and it can be scary but your videos help put me at ease. I'm really glad I found this channel, It helped me realize that opportunities can come from anywhere as long as you put yourself in a position to find them. Here's to another million!
One of the most valueable videos I've seen this year - thanks for being that honest ! Your videos are very much appreciated ! Cheers from Switzerland
"I bought these noodles, because somebody told me I was responsible for the American revolutionary war" Lmao!
Found your channel via recommendations. Binge watched almost all of your vids. And i don't regret it
5:05
anyone else see that guy sleeping in the back?
2020 had to scan the comments to see who else found him knocked out XD
We have the exact same Ikea duvet cover / bedset. I don't have the angry cat plushie though. I have a real cat.
He is often angry however.
#askabroad How did your family react to you moving to Japan? And is it hard not to lose touch with them?
4 years late, I came here to say that the 'Man Bread' is actually 'german bread'. The Ger is on the level above it, and they just 'snipped' german in half.
One of the best Jvlogger ! Congrats for your 1 million subs!
congrats!
Can't wait to see your gold play button unboxing next year
#AskAbroad Do you think you might have oversold the likelihood of our questions being answered? You have 1 mil subs now, that's still going to be a ton of questions asked. Congrats btw!
It's the new thing among the J Tubers, don't reply to any comments.
#AskAbroad I can not think of a question on the spot....ah, what's your favourite genre of music?
your 1st failed speech attempt then 2nd successful attempt is pretty damn inspiring. it made your future ted talk surmountable. the fact you moved to another country not to mention an entirely different language is courageous in the first place.
Ripe fruit is what they meant to write. But i'll be having nightmares about rape fruit for a long time now.
Beerdy - Bruce Lee Central could be grape fruit and panman (like anpanman or nikuman)
Beerdy - Bruce Lee Central, is that with or without the custardpudding?
Rape Seed (and rape seed oil) is a very common thing in your grocery store, you know? Although you might know it by its alternate name "canola oil".
It's not a fruit though +kenised
@@kenised Yeah they meant Rape seed, not grape fruit or ripe fruit that's for sure.
I noticed you forgot the #AskAbroad
wasn't there natto in that challenge with Japanese girls and Marmite?
Do a video in full Japanese subbed, that would be amazing for a 1million special, love your work btw
He'd probably put up fake subtitles to screw with us :D
You’re honestly amazing and so impressive. Before Covid, I had a Japan teaching job lined up. It’s all stopped now (because they all seem to have put hiring on hold) but eventually I’ll keep trying. I really hope I can make my experience half as rewarding as yours.
Congrats on the 1 million!!! You have the best personality, and seem to always bring a smile to my face when I watch your videos.
Great video.
Did you ever got axienty by NOT doing something, or NOT living a new life somewhere else etc? I think I am experiencing that, like axienty of being stuck or not moving forward as you would like
All the time. You’re either a slave to expectation or haven’t begun your journey down the right path (the path you truly want to follow deep down).
Riccardo Moscatello The weight of opportunity
@@riccardomoscatello2030 Right now, I just don't know where I left that 'right mindset', I have a feeling I had that years or decades ago, now I totally lost it. Still hoping on findin' it, wish me luck.
Great video, Chris. It was really touching.
My question is will you ever make a video speaking entirely in Japanese with English subtitles?
Such a great idea! I used to think that it's so weird Christ's been living in Japan for 6 yrs but still can't pronounce Ryotaro's name correctly. Never knew that he's actually done a full 15-min speech in Japanese. I'd be so excited to see him do this.
Atlanta, GA (US) here. I find your content to be very amusing and have spent many happy pandemic hours learning about Japan through the eyes of a Westerner. Keep it coming!
This man never ceases to impress me and he's bloddy hilarious 😂😂
hey. I moved country this year and likewise it gave me the worst bouts of anxiety I've ever had in my life. I'm glad things worked out for you in the end, as they also did for me. it's hard.
This guy's humor is sublime. Reminds me of a Guy Ritchie film.
Can't wait to see how Ryotaro achieved 6⭐️ wanted level
Absolutely brilliant video. Turn something negative into something useful feels so amazing when one succeeds in that. ❤️
I love you Chris, I come back to this video to re assure myself and keep that inspiration to learn and experience Japanese culture!
