Storm Callum GO AROUNDS, WINDSHEAR & CROSSWIND at Manchester Airport 13/10/18

  • Throughout Friday and Saturday Storm Callum unleashed the latest battering of storm season, with torrential rain and gale force winds.
    MAN didn't see the worst of the storm but was still subject to harsh conditions, I arrived at MAN around 9 and didn't leave till just after 3. Winds didn't reach much more than 35 knots but what made it interesting was the direction. Winds varied between 180 and 200 degrees making for a good amount of crosswind action.
    In this video you'll see a variety of bumpy approaches and landings from EasyJet A320's and 320NEO's (G-EZRM from Belfast and G-UZHH from Malta standing out). TUI 757's & 767's didn't fair much better with some very bouncy landings. FlyBe's new liveried G-JECP was bounced around on the approach also!
    The conditions caused some violent windshear on the approach causing 5 go arounds, 3 are featured in this video as I had to leave rather promptly to catch my train home.
    First was EI-FTJ operating FR3205/RYR32BR from Rome CIA. The aircraft aborted around 1000 feet up.
    Next was G-JZHO operating LS760/EXS760 from Mahon. The first approach was broken off around 500 feet, after following the missed approach procedure and getting back on the ILS, the aircraft encountered windshear once again, this time within 100 feet and over the runway threshold, after this second more dramatic go around, the aircraft subsequently diverted to STN.
    Fantastic day here at MAN, these storms are really good fun to spot in!
    Thanks for watching!

      Flybe operate to some airports that are very remote with harsh weather conditions and short runways - their crew are familiar with these conditions and the aircraft types that they operate are just as robust in such conditions as any other

    is it true pilots sometimes purposely make a hard landing in rain wind to plant the aircraft onto the tarmac for stability

    • @AviationUpclose
      @AviationUpclose  6 лет назад +3

      Well, pilots won't deliberately make a hard landing as that would damage the aircraft, but it is true that pilots will try and plant the main gear on the runway if it is wet or windy, to prevent a bounce or aquaplaning, this helps to deploy the spoilers to slow down!

    • @AtulBhatia
      @AtulBhatia 6 лет назад +2

      We prefer to call it a 'firm' landing ;) But yes, on a wet runway, a firm landing helps the tyre break through the film of water and get a grip, so to speak.

  • @arturo468

    Sorry, but these airport car park beside the runway videos are pretty pointless. Crosswind landings should be filmed from behind the aircraft instead of perpendicularly. These clips do not illustrate the crosswind component that the aircraft are experiencing and the manoeuvres made in the final stage of the landing.

    • @AviationUpclose
      @AviationUpclose  6 лет назад +1

      Well. I was quite limited with spots as the main area to film landings with the criteria you listed is currently mobbed by roadworks. The second location does a good job of showing the crosswind in my opinion as you can see the aircraft crabbed towards the camera. I did my best with the locations I had at my disposal

    • @AviationUpclose

      @@AviationUpclose Great to hear that. The story is, that a friend of my kids on this plane arrived as the latest young adult of a group of boys and girls from all over the world for studies at Capernwray. She travelled from Hamburg after having flown from Israel via Istanbul two days earlier and all flights were quite spectacular. I on Saturday missed the runway webcam. I already knew about the windy conditions at Manchester on Saturday. I had checked flight weather the day before, when I was talking to her in Northern Germany, where she lives. I am a privat pilot at EDDG, so quite familiar with flying, being the third generation and my kids are already the forth generation. So would you be able to upload that mentioned approach?
