- Setting up the WRC (Wolf River Coils) in a local park, not a POTA activation as this isn't listed yet. Took out my HF Field case that contains my 891 and a few goodies. Also features my Field Bag. Hope you enjoy! 73's

Hope you enjoyed watching! Comment below with the farthest contacts you've made with the Wolf River Coils!
Great video and very informative detailed instructive setup guide, i have the SB 1000 and Mini TIA, and use 70m radial plane consisting of four radials, 2x4m time 5 lengths, and 2x3m time 5 lengths for use with my DX Commander Classic, (reside in the UK) and using the WRC 102" whip swr is under 1.5 but i still use the ldg at 100 pro 2 tuner in shack, with FT DX 10 to get a swr of 1.1, with LMR 400 20m long which has made contacts of FT 8 FT 4 on 20m. 40m, and 17m all over Europe, Oman, Kuwait, Uzbekestan, Lebanon, Puerto Rico, US West Coast and Canada and Asiatic Russia, which has really surprised me how versatile and effective the WRC are to be with more radials on the ground.. with under 50w.... I see WR have a Platinum version of the SB 1000 that can do 100w digital, now that will be very impressive... take care 73
The only thing different that I would recommend is to get a mast extension and raise the coil off of the ground about 30-36” in order to have the coil not interact with the ground below it,and to help it radiate better in free space. It will also give you more usable bandwidth during operation.
That's a good suggestion, center loading is definitely more efficient than base loading. I mostly only use it for 20m though, so I don't use the coil too much!
@@HamRadioNewb Using just the whip for 20 meters and above is wise, but I also use mine for 30 and 40.With 100W in CW mode, and using 18 ground radials from S.Arizona,I worked S.Korea on 20 meters, and Mali on 30 meters. They work,if deployed properly. Thanks for the video
Great job! Gotta love how easily a vertical/coil can be set-up.
Thanks! It's very quickly become my go to field antenna, hard to find myself grabbing anything else
Hi, thanks for making this about the Wolf River coil setup, I intend to purchase the platinum coil and should be able to use it with my Chameleon 17 foot whip, that the plan anyway! 73 Alex M0KVA
Best of luck on your portable!
With the take it along tripod, they have the normal 12” legs, like you have, but also offer 24” legs for more stability. The one foot legs are easily portable and will fit in most small bags whereas the two foot ones, not so much. I’ve always wondered why they never developed two one foot sections that screw or otherwise fit into each other so the user could have both stability and portability?
They're a small operation, so I imagine it's just to have less stuff to keep on hand. It would be an easy thing to make at home though, the 3/8 rod is available at most hardware stores, then just run a die over it. Making this reply has given me an idea though, I'll keep you posted!
Thanks for the video. How long would you say would a 12 ah LiFePO4 @ft891 running lets say 50w of power SSB? Would you say it is enought for a casual day in the park? :)
The way I operate it seems to come out to 1.5Ah or so per hour at 100 watts, during the skywarn recognition day I operated for 3.5 hours and only used 3Ah of lifepo4 at 50w. This should last plenty long!
@@HamRadioNewb Thanks, glad to hear that. Background: I can not operate from home (big city, no space, much noise). So the only reason i am getting a licence currently is doing portable operation. And while searching for a power solution i came across LiFePO4 and always wonder how much you would need a , lets say saturday outdoor trip. Thanks for sharing your experience. So you are using 100w portable?

Ahh nice, similar situation here! I'd say you should plenty of power for an afternoon, a full day might run fairly low! It all depends on how much you tx. Starting with 12 would likely be fine though, and they're a great size physically
You used 32' radials, which are approximately 1/4 wave on 40m. Two full wavelengths of radials would require eight or more radials, would it not?
Great video! I look forward to following along. 73!
Yes, that would be 8 radials, when is set up for 40 or 80 I use 9 radials. (Less ideal on 80, but I'm not going to bring that much wire out, impractical for the field). Being on 20m I had 6 radials (I think) which is 3 wavelengths that day. Length isn't critical, just having the wire out there is!
Thanks for the comment!
Good job
Thanks for the encouragement!
Where can I buy the low profile tripod like you used?
Thanks for the comment! The tripod I have for putting the wrc on comes from them. It's on their website. As configured what was set up was the TIA Mega. You can buy the tripod seperate from that kit.
@@HamRadioNewb Thanks bro.
@@chuck_howard glad I could help! Hope to hear you on the air!
Have you tried the Alex loop
I have not, they're pretty pricey so it's been hard to justify purchase
Is that an MFJ whip?
It’s the big one they sell. I have the 8ft and 17ft from WRC. Haven’t played with the 8ft yet but I think it’ll be nicer to take hiking! 17ft for every POTA/camping trip for me though.
@@HamRadioNewb thank you. I didn't realize WRC sells a 17 footer. Good to know.
@@kevingoshe4371 I'm not sure if tbey used to, I bought mine this summer. Some people say the mfj one has thicker metal. The wrc is 50 instead of 70. I feel like it's a decent whip
@@HamRadioNewb i appreciate you taking the time to answer my question. Nice video by the way! Keep them coming.
@@kevingoshe4371 glad you enjoyed it! Don't forget to subscribe! (cliche, I know)
What do you use to power your rig?
Hi, thanks for the comment! I have a 12 ah LiFePO4 in the case, it works great for an afternoon in the park. i have a full breakdown of the case in the video linked in the description!
It’s the HF Field Case link.
