Same here, went tuna casting the other day and my rizzuto's all came undone leaving just my initial 4~5 half hitches which stayed locked in place. IF you look at the Rizzuto closely, you can figure out that the braid is pulling in the opposite direction as the rizzuto, which i figure is unraveling the knot.
@Ryan D I even use loon knot sense, and it still comes undone. Im no expert, but i did stay in a holiday inn express last night. In my opinion, it's the casting and the tag end of the rizzuto hitting the guides.
A properly done rizzuto cannot come undone, only wear out after continuous bumping through the rings. Never had one come undone. Maybe you are not doing it right.
There's no need for any half hitches. Wrap, tighten, finish with a whipping knot. These knots work by biting into the leader material, and they hold tighter the more tension is placed on the working end. The only thing the hitches or whipping knot do is hold the entire thing together when there isn't tension on it
@@phantomshtter this isn't necessary and only makes the knot bulkier and harder to cast through the guides. Do your wraps and immediately tie the rizutto/whipping knot to cap the tag end and keep tension on the wraps, and the entire thing stays no larger than the diameter of the leader
That's a lot of half hitches you got going on! FG locks itself into the Mono. FG is far quicker and holds great! My FG's looks similar when done so there's no need for this. Thanks though.
You need to do your multiple half-hitches in alternate directions so they lock against each other. Also, the Risuto finish isn’t a resilient synch because It locks in the opposing direction to the fishing forces and eventually unravels. If you must use jt, lock it with super glue. A better finish is 4 or 5, “3” loop half-hitches, tied in opposing directions. Just say’in … 😉
@@ryand8461 the "rizutto" is a whipping knot that holds itself in place. It's stronger than any number of half hitches. If it's coming undone, you're not tying it right
The "rizutto" is just a whipping knot used to jam the non operative side of the knot in place and hold it together. It doesn't see any "fishing forces," only the forces required to hold the wraps in place, which tighten under tension anyway.
But can it be tied in .6 PE to a 7# fluoro leader? I love seeing it done without a bobbin, but it seems like cinching the knot properly would break or permanently damage light fluorocarbon.
FG for casting, PR for jigging. You need twice as much surface for the braid when doing an PR knot, but its a definite goto knot when it comes to heavyweight jigging for large fish.
I think Hook and Rigs are both right and this pretty much relies on the circumstances. Light braid and leader call for simpler knots splicing to catch smaller prey. Blood knots, double uni’s, Alberto’s, etc. are faster to tie and will hold steady up to 15 pounds or so. you can tie a 1.5 oz sinker to the braid and just spin it 30x around the mono and back again in under 15 seconds, then cut sinker off and finish the knot.
'Chinese finger trap' AKA 'FG knot'... technically the most reliable and slim knot for tying braid to mono and even braid to braid... all the others tries to follow the same old Chinese principle but with more braided line and efforts, FG can be done in less than 60 seconds and if tied well will give 100 percent of the line breaking strength.
A PR knot is indeed stronger than the FG knot but not this particular one. It needs a proper lead in. A straight 90 degrees barrel wrap up and then back down makes for a very weak PR knot. Not to mention it is very time consuming compare to the FG knot.
Kind of defeats the purpose of the pure FG. Just added bulk to hit the guides, losing casting distance, and absolutely no strength gain, as it is not the working end of the knot. We could go a mile with 1/2 hitches and the knot will not be stronger, but bulkier and stiffer making it longer. After the 1st 3 1/2 hitches, i cut the leader very close, then the rizutto butts against it perfect. Low profile, protect the very end of the braid. The shorter the length of the knot the more micro guide friendly. Never had a rizutto come undone. Had 1/2 hitches come undone in the past why I switched to the rizutto.
Form and function are more important than the little gain in knot strength which becomes irrelevant if the knot failure occur at other knots like the swivel or hooks.
The video is good but this knot has a fatal flaw and it bumps pretty hard on the top guide. There's a reason why the FG knot is considered the number one leader to braid connection, because it's frickin awesome.
This is because he ties it incorrectly. After you cut off the tag end of the mono you continue making wraps. When the line is going through the guides it first comes in contact with these wraps. This is the correct way.
