    A few tips: if you use the pistons use jack chain for extra support. The brackets on those pistons are weak and bend easily. If you have even a little bit of weight in there it’ll eventually wear out and hit your bottom support board. Take time on the sanding, if you get in a hurry you’ll have to do it over. And the magnetic locks take some time to place and you might actually break a couple before you get them lined up properly. This was a fun build! 🤙🤙

    I like the fact that you did all this without using more tools like a joiner, plainer or biscuit joiner. I don't have any of those tools yet so I think this earns the "Easy DIY" title.

    • @DadPool_Hyde

      Aaron, use a drill bit and wooden dowels instead of the plethora of pocket holes/screws and it’ll be much stronger, and no special tools are necessary, least of all expensive jigs and specialty screws.

    You should try boiled linseed oil instead of stain. The thing that sucks though is you would have to put quite a few coats to get a darker look and let each coat dry atleast 24 hrs but it gives it a beautiful look.

      People highly overestimate how much wood will expand and contract in a controlled environment. If you have it indoors with heating and AC, you aren't going to get a lot of expansion/contraction. The way this was built, he has much bigger problems than expansion and contraction of the wood.

      I’m gonna make a modified coffee table but really needed info on the compartment assembly so it was a huge help. One question if you don’t mind. At 12:54, you mention adding spacers for the butt-joints. I just wanna be sure I’m understanding correctly, are the spacers placed on the backside of the hinges that are mounted to the table frame?

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  4 года назад

    Sorry to say, but I have built quite a few drawers, cabinets, and tables in my day and have learned a few things doing so. Although this build looks nice when finished, I have serious doubts it would stand the test of time in regards to durability. A few criticisms: 1. Minwax polyeurethane is not meant as a tabletop finish. It is simply not hard enough and when applied to a soft wood, will not stand the test of time. You should be using a rated topcoat for tablet top surfaces. 2. The drawers you are building are being bound only by staples and glue with single 2-face jointing. The size of the drawer bottom will allow loading the drawer with enough weight where the drawer bottom has a good chance of breaking its glue mold and coming undone. The same with the sides, as the wood expands and contracts, it will eventually separate and come undone. You should be using a better way to join these surfaces. A dado cut along the bottom edges of the side would provide a groove the bottom can rest in and l greatly reinforce its weight capacity. Rabbit cuts for the sides will provide a 4-face joining for the glue and staples and greatly reduce the probability of it coming apart. These are all possible with the tools you are using. 3. The finish products you are using are sub-standard home-improvement junk. I used MinWax for years because I thought that one finish was just as good as the other and it was the one sitting on the shelf at the local home improvement store. But once I started to use other finishing systems (such as General Finishes), I will never go back. I know this sounds like alot of criticism (because it is), but I can not simply say nothing when I see obvious mistakes.

    • @guyincognito.
      @guyincognito. 3 года назад +2

      Minwax does suck. I learned this myself after I used it on some projects and noticed that regardless of how many coats I used or how perfect the application, any water dropped on a Minwax Poly finish would leave a permanent mark where the lustre was altered somehow by the moisture. I've since switched to a quality varnish and get a 100% waterproof finish with only one coat.

      Ok….. so name a “rated” brand and type of top coat? Also since you seem like someone who knows how to build this, I built it using some oak hard wood everything turned out great… except I bought some small shocks at Home Depot and their really tough to compress and once I got even just one shock screwed in it wants to push out the drawer immediately, I just want the shocks to expand when I apply alittle pulling force…. Any suggestions????

    Nice but I wouldnt use glue joining the top to the base. Thats a cross-grain situation where the expanding and contracting of the wood would eventually crack the top. If you are in sunny Cali you could get away with it.

    • @WoodNerds
      @WoodNerds  3 года назад

      Hey Shane! You’re right! I haven’t had any issues with my previous tops but you should account for movement using specific table top fasteners that account for expansion/contraction of wood with changes in the environment.
