some of my favorites this year so far: Hit Me Hard and Soft - Billie Eilish: Arguably a perfect pop album. Billie, while I still think Happier Than Ever is a better, more mature, inventive album, has made one of her most interesting releases to date. She's got jazz pop vocals on some songs, the synths are almost orchestral, and who can forget the absolute bangers that are Lunch and Birds of a Feather Bright Future - Adrianne Lenker: Adrianne has always been one of my folk artists and songwriters, and this album has some of her BEST writing. the opener alone rivals the likes of A Crow Looked at Me. There's even a more country twang to this album that wasn't as clear as other Adrianne/Big Thief albums Coup De Grace - SeeYouSpaceCowboy: Screamo, Post Hardcore, Jazz Drumming, Midwest Emo, Metalcore? All in this theatric, fast paced, dancey Metalcore album. Connie has fully come into her own as a vocalist and I could not be happier for her. Queer culture is often demonized SPECIFICALLY in the metalcore scene as of late, but as a trans woman, she is making better music than a LOT of her contemporaries, and even BREATHES her queerness into the music Scrapyard - Quadeca: While I wasn't the BIGGEST fan of IDMTHY, I did appreciate its artistry and what Quad was TRYING to do, and I was excited to see where things went next. While this mixtape is apparently just a bunch of outtakes and b-sides, all of them are surprisingly (IN MY OPINION) better put together than IDMTHY. EASIER and U TRIED THAT THING WHERE UR HUMAN are CRUSHING songs and if these are any indication as to where Vanisher is going, Vanisher might be the best thing Ben has ever released plastic death - glass beach: I have a LOT of queer artists on my list of favorites, which probably says a lot about me. J of plastic beach initially released "the first glass beach album" in 2019. It was a fantastic emo album, that did so much to EVOLVE the genre of emo. They then took a break to work on both their vocal training and the writing for this album. You could probably NEVER tell that this is the same band. We have art rock, shoegaze, screamo, noise pop, midwest eno, even some inspiration from black metal. This album is a once in a lifetime album, and it's hard to relisten to it for enjoyment, but it hits SO HARD
