I totally agree. Fernando should have stopped one lap earlier (like Heidfeld did, who came up from eigth to second) or not at all, since his pitstop only regained him the positions he had lost in the pit lane.
@@TheColinChapmanHe would have won the race stopping 1 lap earlier because in that last lap he was 30 seconds faster than the leaders and even much faster than Nick who was also with wet tyres
I love seeing the huge difference being on the right tyres makes. I'd also love to see Heidfeld's last two laps, and Bourdais dropping from third to seventh in less than a lap because he didn't pit.
Right tyre choice on a drying track. Compare that to Ayrton Senna in Donington 1993 who started with the same tyres as everybody else. Overtook 4 cars in a few corners in the opening lap of the race. Among those Schumacher, Hill and Alain Prost (the latter two in the dominant Williams-Renault). Schumacher won from 16'th on the grid in Spa in 1995.
Its so crazy how he can overtake 4 drivers in one lap, I remember watching this race live and laughing when Kimi finally spun his car out.. I knew either him or Hamilton would at some point, with the way they were battling it out with 4 laps to go or something.
Alonso was the driver who scored most points in the last half of 2008 (Singapore tho.... Had the first half been better he'd have been a Championship contender.
It didn't matter, he would probably have finished 4th anyway, as you say. But this gives a good showing of how much faster you can actually be on inters/wet tyres in these conditions. If Fernando stopped 1 lap earlier, he might even had a chance to win i think.
time will tell, i think hamilton is what the sport needed at that time a frindly "nice" polite driver for kids to look upto and a cracking driver to boot
This move cost Alonso track position to Heidfeld and nearly cost him 2 more positions to Vettel and Kubica as well.So why the hell are people applauding it? It was a gamble that did not pay off. Firstly, Alonso was 4th before Kimi crashed out so was up to 3rd when he pit. By pitting he lost places to Heidfeld, Bourdais, Vettel, Kubica, Kovalainen and he only just managed to beat Vettel and Kubica over the line.If Alonso didn't pit he would have finished 2nd behind Massa. (After Hamiltons 25s penalty dropped Hamilton to 3rd). instead Alonso finished 4th
How would Renault have had any idea that Raikonnen would spin off, or Hamilton would be penalised? It was a gamble that he executed beautifully, only unforeseeable circumstances mean not taking the pitstop could have lead to a better outcome. And isn't racing and passing generally seen as a good thing?
Heidfeld take part of the gamble, because he was P7 and 53 seconds ahead the P1 when it remained 7 laps to go. Alonso was P4, with Bourdais behind him 5 seconds ahead. Would be so crazy from Renault and Alonso, to change tyres 2 laps before, when Raikkonen still in the lead and when it was not clear about the rain. Watching races 10 years after, and from the sofa, is easier to decide strategies.
Heidfeld had the best strategy. Not sure if Alonso would have done better without his stop. He may have been overtaken by Heidfeld as well or he might have crashed. Given how slw Hamilton and Massa were in the final lap it made perfect sense to switch to intermediates.
Renault didn't want to risk P4 for nothing. Heidfeld pitted early because he was in P7 and had little to lose. Renault eventually realised that pitting for tyres could be a useful gamble, but waited later to reduce risk.
There is nothing wrong with being a fan of Heidfeld. I quite like him myself. I also like this quote from Wiki: "Heidfeld has now started 150 races, so if he were to eventually win a race he would break the record for most starts before a maiden victory."
@vickmatell Nick was 8th when he came into the pits with 2 laps to go, he didn't lose a place during his stop. then Kimi shredded his Ferrari (Nick was 7th), when Nick entered his last lap, he became 6th (due to Fernando's stop), and during his last lap in the Malmedy-Pouhon-Section he passed Vettel (5th), Kubica(4th) and Bourdais(3rd). After the race, Hamilton got penalized and Nick was promoted to 2nd. I think his last lap at Spa 2008 can be compared to Senna's first lap at Donington 1993.
You're right. Fernando had been ahead of the Bourdais/Kubica/Vettel/Heidfeld-train, Nick stopped after 42 laps for full wets, 1 lap later Fernando stopped for intermeds and could reel in 3 out of 4. Thus, his pit stop had brought him an opportunity to prove his driving skills, but no net advantage. Heidfeld ended up 2nd, only 9 seconds behind Massa. With Nick's pitstop strategy, Fernando would have had a chance to catch Felipe in his last lap. but there is no 'if' or 'would' in racing...
@beyblader10171 he didn't get past Heidfeld. Nick stopped after 42 laps for intermeds, Fernando after 43 out of 44. On lap 42, Fernando was ahead of Nick, but he finished behind him. the white BMW Fernando overtook was Kubica, not Heidfeld.
"This is currently held by Rubens Barrichello, who claimed his first victory on his 123rd attempt. Heidfeld also currently holds another dubious record; he is the driver who has scored the highest number of world championship points without a Grand Prix win." Impressive. Really, there is nothing wrong with being his fan but please, don't try to compare him with Fernando.
This record was now broken twice by 2021. In 2009, Webber won his first race at the German GP which was his 130th race and then again at the Sakhir GP in 2020 where Sergio Perez won at his 190th race.
both Fernando and Nick overtook the same number of drivers on the track (three, namely Bourdais, Vettel and Kubica). In the end, the 2008 count between them was 61:60, and please do not forget that the singapore victory for Fernando was the result of a fony. So I think they were even - more or less.
I am not bitter at all - I think he deserved all he got, I am just saying that in FR, F3 and GP2 he was with teams proven capable of winning. I am not saying that his skill is lower than any other Grand Prix driver, probably higher than most. I don't know how we got into this from me saying that you were wrong about F3000, and then again with the "F3" comment - I don't think Hamilton is a bad driver in any way.

it's not the drive, it's the fact he was willing to take the gamble and amazingly made up 4 places in the space of a few corners. That's what made it amazing.

Heidfeld finished second because of Lewis Hamilton penalty. Also, Nick Heidfeld doesn't drive in F1 any more. He never won a single Grand Prix despite starting over 180 of them. He has the most podiums for a driver who never won anything. He is nothing like Ayrton Senna da Silva or Fernando Alonso Díaz.
