    I've looking for a good video on how to build a loft for a long time because all the loft beds I keep finding are either made out of metal (which I rather have wood because I think it would be easy to take care of and take down if I need to) or they were outlandishly expensive. I'm really going to consider this in the future when my family moves

Definitely google "2 lofts in 1 room" and see what that search returns / I'm sure you'll see a number of different options and you can use the same concepts in my video and adapt them to different layouts. Incredible. It’s so frustrating to see these very cheap beds in the store going for thousands. This is beautiful and affordable. Only very minor critique is: if you’re going to put a mattress on a piece of plywood, you’ll need an intermediate layer for air circulation, otherwise you’ll get a moldy mattress.

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  2 года назад +2

      I used zinc #6 drywall screws and eyeballed the joints where they were used. Typical lengths I used....
      2x4 to 2x4: 3"
      2X4 to 1XX: 1 5/8", almost always driving from the 1X side
      1X to 1X: almost always 1 5/8" - but - if there was any risk of poke though, 1 1/4"
      Carriage bolts: 5/16" - 1/4" should be find but the head size is almost the same between the two so I went larger.
      CLAMP EVERYTHING AND USE WOODGLUE TOO!!!!!!!!! I also drilled pilot holes if there were knots nearby/etc (better safe then sorry) / Thanks for the comment!

      The mattress bedframe is the weak point (thus the shear load of the 1x3s and OSB) as the jack studs at the 4 corners are good for more people than the bed can hold. I'll see if I can put together a calculation to share

      Hi Joe (and Taco Joe) - same question here. I didn’t recognize that material and am curious where you got it and how you finished it.
      I built a desk a few years back and used 5-6 coats of water based poly with sanding between coats. It still came out like an orange peel and felt really weird. Suggestions on desk top material appreciated

    I absolutely love the idea and the design. But the lumber prices in the video are WAY off. The 1x8x8 listed at $4.78 are $15. This will coast WAY more than $200 unless I’m missing something. Anybody got any clarification?

      I believe this video is 3 yrs old. There has been a big price increase on lumber since the pandemic. Which also means that the particle board furniture is more expensive too.

    How do you calculate the load bearing capacity ?

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  3 года назад

      I'll see if I can put something together - this has been a common question - the jack studs at the corners far exceed what is needed to support the bed frame so that is the weak point (ie - the mattress box) - The worst case load bearing moment is 54"/2 or 27"- to be safe you could consider a point load and distribute among the 1X3s / associated shear load. Unscientifically though, 2 adults up top and there is very little flex - its solid and the bonded 1x3s and OSB really do their job. Also - the perimeter boards also further minimize flex (screwed-glued to the 1X3s) - Maybe I can do a jump on the loft video like the slow-mo guys do and we'll measure flex or take it to failure - lol - thanks of the comment!

    what do you think the likely hood of a young adult being able to use this is... I'm considering going with a lofted bed with desk underneath for myself and am unsure of whether they would hold my weight or not.. less than 250 LB for reference.

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  2 года назад +1

      No problem w/250lbs - the key is making sure everything is plumb when you put it together and that you use carriage bolts / wood glue on the jack studs. The weak point is the bedframe (where I use the 1X3s-OSB). If you are worried and want to beef that up, swap out the OSB with plywood and you can even up the 1x3s to 1x4s - but- remember the mattress might sit up higher as a result and you should consider 1x10 / 1x12 sides on the bed frame instead. Thanks for the comment!

    Can you please tell me the measurements I’d need for a twin sized bed. I’m a total noob at this and don’t want to try guessing.
