Incase you decide to try this, Taco Joe did his mathing wrong. The center desk cut lengths @5:02 should have side lengths of 44.25” not 45.75”. 45.75” should be the overall length with sides added. Unless you want a screwy situation with the desk i advise to adjust accordingly.

Here Nov 2024 and found this amazing, only real DIY loft bed vid I could find so far. Thank you for sharing. This is my next project. As a foster parent we have to be frugal and make due with the space we have and this is exactly what we need.

Built one, doesnt go over the rails or bed frame plus the ladder is lacking detail on how to build. You’ll have to spend way more than $200, lumber is sitting just over $600 too unless you are able to find bargains wood that meets the length criteria.

    Thanks for the walkthrough! For anyone coming here after me, and interested in making this build, I compiled the cut list here: 75"x54" OSB / plywood (1) 1x3 73.5" (2) (platform side - long) 1x3 73.5" (4) (railings - long) (estimated) 1x3 54" (2) (platform side - short) 1x3 54" (2) (railing - short) (estimated) 1x3 52.5" (2) (platform supports) 1x3 51" (4) (desk base - both sides) 1x3 49.5" (4) (desk long sides - both sides) 1x3 45.75" (2) (desk side support) 1x3 20" (4) (desk short sides) 1x3 18.5" (4) (desk supports) 1x3 10.75" (2) (desk shelf short sides) 1x3 9.25" (2) (desk shelf supports) 1x4 72" (8) (legs) 1x4 66.5" (2) (ladder rails) 1x4 13.5" (1) (ladder "top") 1x8 76.5" (2) (bedframe side - long) 1x8 54" (2) (bedframe side - short) 1x8 52.5" (1) (top of bookshelf) 1x8 51" (5) (shelves) 1x8 48" (2) (sides) 1x8 44.5" (2) (sides) 2x4 57" (4) (jack studs) 2x4 13.5" (5) (ladder rungs) As per a previous comment, though, I'm actually swapping out the OSB, making some minor modifications to the platform portion, and buying some pre-strung bed slats. I'm also adding a small 3-drawer cabinet underneath the desk. At least that's my plan, wish me luck!

Incredible. It’s so frustrating to see these very cheap beds in the store going for thousands. This is beautiful and affordable. Only very minor critique is: if you’re going to put a mattress on a piece of plywood, you’ll need an intermediate layer for air circulation, otherwise you’ll get a moldy mattress.

Hello Joe! Really interesting modifications. I had no idea it was that simple to remove the top of the motor and lengthen the wires to a switch made more accesssible to control the speed. I see may people rig pulley systems to steer the motor, but almost nobody does anything to control the speed and this was really puzzling to me... Can you provide more insight into the kind of switch that is? I am familiar with soldering and using blade connectors, but that switch is a mystery to me... also, can you tell us which cable (pins) color does what on the motor? Thanks Joe and happy fishing!
