Great video. Actually it was your bike videos that inspired me to buy a bicycle. I rode my bike 263 days last year for an average of 337 miles a month. I drove a car for only 9 days this past year. I'm 57 years old. But even old dogs can learn new tricks. Before getting the bike I drove 50 miles in a car to work 5 days a week. I did hike about twenty miles on the weekend back then. So I wasn't a softy. But I was really inspired by your cycling videos, moved closer to work, got a bike and really enjoy cycling everywhere. I do live in Boise, Idaho, which is pretty bicycle friendly. I often do suffer from distracted drivers trying to kill me by ignoring laws, but I compensate for that. Also, I've always been fit, but I've lost 30 pounds. And my legs are much stronger. And like you, I love hiking with a Jack Russell. Keep up the good work! I really love your channel.

Great video. I have a fat bike with a mid motor kit that I put on myself. Two batteries that claim to be 17.5 amp hour each. The most I have got from one battery is 65 Km. Uphill reduces it a lot. Maybe lucky to get 35 or 40 under tough conditions in the winter. Some tips. Minimize the power usage going up hills. Don't use any going down hill. On the flat if you go slower it will use less battery. The fat bike I have with me peddling would go around 12.5 km/hr on the flat with no motor. After I put the motor on I go around 15 to 18 km/hr to get the ranges I am talking about. If you lower your speed to maybe 12.5 km/hr on the flat it should not use any battery. Maybe faster for you, I am 68. Going up the hill just try to tough it out using as little battery as possible. If your display shows amps. If you keep it at 3 amps your 14.5 should last almost 5 hours. If it shows watts that would be 150 watts assuming you have a 50 volt battery. Staying in a motel is a good way to charge the batteries. I have been looking for a gas powered generator but the smallest I have found is 1000 watts which is overkill. My charger is 2 amp at 50 volt or 100 watt. If the generator is too heavy to take with you on the bike could cache it somewhere to get a charge. Have seen some videos where they get a charge at Tim Hortons etc. Just need to bring the charger with you and have 6 hours to spare. Happy biking.

Hey brother I always love your content. As a fellow dog lover and owner (really though who owns who?) I think it's awesome that Rocco is there by your side through all of the adventures! Isn't it weird to sit back and think of how empty life was when our faithful best friends weren't with us yet?? Happy trails bro, stay safe!

Someone recommended this video to me. I go on self supported tours and recently got an ebike for commuting. I've been thinking about going on an ebike tour, but my 500 w battery would not last very long at all. Thanks for a great ebike touring case study.

Don't worry about going into the stores put that puppy dog inside your jacket and go buy what you need. People take their dogs into the store a whole lot more than what you think and the stores don't usually mind especially when they're inside your jacket or you could put her in one of those little carry bags or in your backpack like you always do. People in the store going to drive you crazy because they're all going to want to say hi they're all going to want to pet her🎉

Foresty, congrats on the new bike. When I saw that I thought of letting you know that I carried a dog on a rear rack for 15 years. I hesitated to inform you as I wondered if your dog would be laidback enough to easily take to riding but she looks fine with it. One thing I feel is important to mention is that from what I observed, dogs are not comfortable sitting upright over long distances especially while constantly having to maintain balance on a moving bike. In order to allow my dog to lie down I cut a couple of openings in the from wall of the carrier through which she could put her front legs to lie down. With that modification we could do distances which were often well over a hundred miles. With a rear rack though, there wasn't much room for camping gear so longer rides were a result of having to get to to a destination without camping.
Your dog looked fairly comfortable in the front carrier but would maybe like some padding on the top rim so you can use a rear rack for camping gear and get by with shorter distances. If you feel it's worth the trouble you could google my name, adding Flikr and Nanaimo. You could zip through the 213 photos that don't include the dog for the 3 or 4 that do and get a better idea of what I'm describing.

awesome! I'd say the battery did pretty well considering all the climbing you did. As you said, it's likely it would have gotten you back to the van because the ride back was mostly downhill. Good luck with future bike tours, it will be fun for us to watch your progress.

Simon don't make a judgment yet on ebike touring. My bike was built by cycle monkey in California to my specs. It's an ventana El Gordo frame, yellow, with 1000 watt? Erad mid drive motor, a Roloff rear internal gearing, hydraulic brakes, a electric front hub with front and rear lights,, and 80mm mulfut rims running 37.5X4.5 barbegazi tires. Jones handlebar. The front fork is carbon fiber, a Lauf carbonara. Dropper seat post. Gates carbon belt drive. Battery is from EM3 and is 14s6p 52 volts and 20 ah. I use 48v satiator charger, highly recommend it.
Actually inspired by some of your fat bike touring. But I'm an older guy and wanted the electric option. It was either that or a trike. And I chose this. It's an awesome bike. Not sure of a couple things on it so I'm still tweaking it. Without the electric motor on I can easily pedal it with the Rohlof. And changing gears is easy. But I wouldn't want to do it for long. Also my bike is less weight probably than yours. Most of the e-bike manufacturers try to keep the costs down. And we know that less weight always means more money. I do have a rear rack on it and I have panniers but I have not done any bike touring with it. I think I could probably get a hundred miles out of my battery.
I'm currently in Utah and riding it occasionally. I don't really like leaving my German Shepherd alone in my RV for long and he's not really that good at following he gets tired and lays down unlike Rocco. But my pup is almost 8...

Glad you discovered the C&W, it's a pleasure no matter your mode of transportation. It didn't always look like this mind you. When the tracks were pulled in the early 1990's it was ATVs that kept it open for years. We removed hundreds of deadfalls, made rockfalls passable and even a few washouts from creeks taking out the surface. Now that it's a resource road you'll see logging trucks from time to time. I'm happy to see it as a shared multi use trail that I can access within a half hour commute from my home.
