Saw in a video that the YES followers were divided into the Troopers and Generators. I’d have to even say there are T.2, T.3 and at least a G.2 version in there. Crimson had plenty of iterations. Genesis seemed to be more of a Paring Away situation. Calling All Stations was fairly abysmal finally. A cool video on here is with Milwaukee native Daryl and how he got the gig as their touring player. He goes back farther than most people realize. Have you listened to any of Hackett’s Genesis Revisited material? Fifth of Firth is awesome. Most of this is IMHO as Afam and bass player.

Genesis is number one for me. Yes, Crimson, and Gentle Giant are the other big guns in the genre.
HOT TAKE #1: Pink Floyd is not a Prog band in the same sense that Led Zeppelin or Steely Dan were not Prog bands. Floyd were a super creative group in a super creative musical era, that doesn't make them Prog.
HOT TAKE #2: Rush is not Prog. I love Rush to death but they are a hard rock group that was heavily influenced by Prog, that doesn't make them Prog. Rush were too simplistic to really be Prog, but they were obviously Prog-influenced.

@Neal Borganelli "Simplistic" is a relative term. Relative to typical rock bands, Rush's music is complex. Relative to Prog bands like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant, Rush's music is simplistic, and Geddy and Alex are the first ones to admit that they were doing a simplified version as a 3-piece from what typical 5-piece Prog bands were doing.

Also at least I have one contemporary band in the list. Pink Floyd may have been very successful commercially, but their songs are too simple to be called prog in my opinion. If individual artists qualify as bands, Frank Zappa should be on the list instead of Steven Wilson.

Fun fact: Mike Pinder, keyboardist for the Moody Blues, was good friends with John and Paul from the time the Moodies toured with the Beatles in 1965. Their songs aren’t particularly hard to play; hence, they’re not “progressive rock.” Also, this is just a matter of personal taste, but Rush and Jethro Tull should be in the top 3 along with Yes. One more note: although Jethro Tull made LOTS of concept albums, Aqualung is not one of em. Hymn 43, My God, and Wind-up (and Wond’ring Aloud to a far lesser extent) all deal with religion but that’s as close as it comes to being a concept album. Fxxxing great album on every level, though.

But if I were to give a definition I’d argue that (at least in general) prog rock is generally defined by 5 characteristics: (1) unusual time signatures and frequent time signature shifts; (2) sophisticated themes and concepts; (3) long songs; (4) a fusion of various genres; and (5) technical virtuosity; i.e., the shit should be hard to play. Basically, anything that sounds more complex and unique than the avarage rock songs, while providing new inspiration to what more rock can achieve, by breaking away from the traditional sound and rules
Through this definition, Pink Floyd would definitely be Prog thanks to Echoes, Animals , the final cut, The Wall and more..
Otherwise, songs like Epitaph, Starless, Wake of Poseidon, Court of the Crimson King.... although perhaps complex in structure, are definitely not that difficult to play, at least on bass and guitar... And I say this, as a 1 year noob on both instruments

The only thing you got right is Yes at no1. I have been listening seriously to music for 50 years now and I have never thought of Pink Floyd as Prog Rock, they are to me in a category of their own, Floydian. As for Genesis at no2, are you having a laugh? ELP are in that position followed by Tull, King Crimson, Focus, Gentle Giant, Greenslade, Zappa, Caravan, Camel, Barclay James Harvest in any order you like and then maybe, just maybe Genesis. Rush and most certainly Marillion don't belong here. Steven Wilson is brilliant but he's a solo artist these days not a band.
