Fun fact, the actress who plays Hari, Kim Sejeong, was an idol and was in a two different groups! That’s why there’s a few references to her brother becoming an idol and why Hari is such a good singer! And when Yeong-seo’s cousin is shopping, she says she want a dress that she saw Kim Sejeong wear on a red carpet. I love little easter eggs like those!

My favorite bit about A Business Proposal, the Netflix adaptation, is that they poked lighthearted fun at all of the KDrama tropes 🤣 Main male lead gets into car accident? I was fully expecting memory loss, nope.. just a hurt arm.
I was expecting Hari to struggle with both of her love interests, nope. She chose Taemoo, AND stood up for that man aaaaaand herself. And put Minwoo in his place lol
It was just great to watch them fall in love 🥰🥰

What I love about K drama is that they are not afraid to be cheesy. I feel that in the North America, for a show to be seen as good, you have to be raw, edgy, and provocative. I think that is why movie like Parasite and tv shows like Squid game are the most notable and acclaimed korean media in North America because they fit these characteristics.
But omg, korean romance drama are the opposite. They are over the top, cheesy and full of tropes. They take themselves seriously while poking fun at themselves all the time. I feel like I’m 14 years old again and I absolutely adore it. They are not trying to be revolutionary, and that’s revolutionary in itself hahaha

I agree that with lighthearted series korean media really excels, but its insanely rare to get like a really quality drama series like Breaking Bad or Succession from korea. Everytime they try something serious they always gotta throw some out there stupid plot twist or contrivance or trope that just ruins everything an otherwise good concept.

    • @lasttimeimaskingyouthis

@@daffo595 I have to agree with you on this. There are very few kdramas that actually have consistency like this. I only remember signal and maybe even tunnel is a good one although I haven't watched it. People make fun of Indians for making cringe tv series but our web series content is actually good. I'm yet to see shows like Sacred Games, Paatal Lok, Undekhi or Made in Heaven which are Indian web series from Korea. I kind of feel like atleast mainstream kdramas get a lot of praise than it actually deserves.

Let's not pretend that k-dramas don't have issues. The plot progression of almost every rom-com is essentially the same which is why you know there's going to be some big realization/event in episode 6 of every one. Characters often fall in love (and acknowledge that) by episode 8 leaving 8 more hours of content that doesn't have enough plot to it to justify sticking around for all the dramatic tropes that every other drama has. Then there's the cheesy ballad that play at every. single. minor. moment between the leads. This can work as a direction if it's simply instrumental because that's subtle. It doesn't work when someone's belting out the same lyrics every other scene to make sure you know it's dramatic instead of letting the acting, directing, and editing tell you that. In terms of being cookie cutter, Korean dramas are actually worse than American dramas as well as other Asian country's dramas. K-dramas now have less character development overall than they did in the early 2000s but their cinematography is, indeed, superior to their older dramas and most current American dramas. The writing, however, is often pretty bad for reasons included above as well as other things that vary by specific drama. There are obviously exceptions to this but I don't think we should act like good k-dramas are the norm. /rant

    • @HNF1294
      @HNF1294 2 года назад +13

Have fun a little haha, not all kdrama is like that! But when it is, I think the super predictable, lovable cheese makes it good. I believe that business proposal was like the quintessential k-drama romance, with troupe after troupe, but that doesn’t make it bad! If you don't like that sort of thing that's totally ok, I would suggest to watch some more dramas though and don't quantify the genre as a whole as "bad" lol.

I definitely recommend on Netflix Vincenzo and Crash Landing On You. My favourite kdrama ever (with Business Proposal being now very close 2nd) - is Strong Woman Do Bong Soon - the mix of comedy, action, romance, and an altogether chaotic, webtoonish mess is to die for! I needed this kdrama and I thank kdrama gods that they cast these actors. they fit so well with the characters and they did so well. There were a lot of adlibs in this kdrama and that just shows how good their synergy is. i hope you can get to watch their behind the scenes. It is fun to watch and you can see how close they are with each other, makes you appreciate the series more. Also regarding the wig, Sejeong (Shin Hari) mentioned that the reason they didn't use the pink wig because the wig that they used here was more realistic than the pink one. Also the director mentioned that the reason they use the CGI archaeopteryx was to keep the comic aspect of it and ofcourse the comedic aspect. Also I love Ms Yeo and Mr Gye, research development team 1 is really fun to watch. The part where they had the rain date, a lot of those scenes were adlibs such as the kiss they shared in the restaurant was an adlib, Hyoseop (tae moo) suggested it first saying that "Tae Moo would've kissed you in this scene" then Sejeong (Hari) said "Yes, I would've been kissed in this scene" then the director approved of it and they did that. also when hari comforted him, the hug was an adlib because based on the script, she was only supposed to pat his head. I can go on and on about this kdrama and that is just how I love this.

i just want to say i love these videos where you talk about shows. they sound like a lot of fun, but they all also sound like the kind of stuff i wouldn't be able to enjoy watching on my own because i have difficulty with secondhand embarrassment and seeing real world situations played for comedy. like, i know i wouldn't be able to like the main couple at all if i was watching this myself because just hearing you say "he keeps doing these roundabout gestures but she doesn't get it because she thinks she's being tested and is gonna get fired" stressed me tf out, and then when you say "and he refuses to actually tell her he's not firing her" made me want to screech. having you describe everything instead cushions it a bit tho so i can ignore the stress and just have fun.

I started reading the manhwa because I enjoyed the drama, and I have to say that I really like the changes they made. Especially her job. I feel like they gave them such basic jobs in the comic so that they wouldn't have to focus any time on them, but Hari loving food and deciding to create frozen meals to bring comfort like she experienced was really impactful, and the fact that Taemu also loves food and creating it, really created an underlying mutual passion and easily adds to every meal they share together.
Her researcher team were pretty much all original to the drama, and they created some of my most hilarious scenes (that bbq scene where 4 are trying to keep various secrets from each other and the drunk coworker was just spilling it all...)
Sunghoon's whole backstory and having the two male characters be more like brothers or cousins, as well as friends was fantastic (also, Sunghoon seemed a bit more sassy in the drama, which I loved).
The whole scene at the orphanage, and the other leads spending time there lent a realism to the class division that Jin's father was upset about made it so the issue wasn't just 'he doesn't have a rich family company to merge with ours,' but actually 'he totally lacks a biological family' - which is still considered a requirement to a lot of Asians when it comes to marriage.
I enjoyed your review, since this was a recent watch for me and of course, no one I know has seen it yet!

I started watching Kdramas about a year ago. My son married a Korean woman and has been living there so I thought it would be neat to 'experience' Korea through some series. The first one I watched was Home Town Cha Cha Cha. I loved it. Since then I think I have watched around 10 differents series. Although Crash Landing on You is my second I have to say Business Proposal was my favorite. I was mad that it was only twelve episodes and not sixteen! It was so good I watched it a second time. Great acting, chemistry, sets, production, etc. I saw that the dubbed English version is coming out May 21, 2022. I doubt the English version will be as good but it might be enjoyable for someone who isn't willing to do subtitles.

The US has a looooong history of making bad adaptations/remakes of Korean (and other foreign) source material. My Sassy Girl, Lake House…etc etc
Kdramas are the elite in romcoms, so happy you’re getting into them!

If u want any help with the names, in korean when you see a name like "Young seo" or "geum hui" you can essentially get rid of the e and pronounce it like "young soh (rhymes with saw)" or "gum hee" hope this helps ^^
(Ik this isn't an accurate description of how ㅓ and ㅡ are pronounced but imo its easier for people who dont know any korean to pronounce them that way)

I almost never watch Kdrama adapations of webtoons/manhwa (because I almost always just prefer the original) but I'm so glad this has sold you on Kdramas! You need to get on Crash Landing Into You, Romance is a Bonus Book, the Reply series, Strong Girl Boon Soon, Hometown Cha Cha Cha, 2521, and if you want to go back in time a bit: Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, Goong (Princess Hours), Coffee Prince, You're So Beautiful, My Name is Kim Sam Soon, Full House. God, I could go on but I'll stop myself here. My romantic comedy itch always and only leads me to kdramas.

I just read the newest chapter of A Business Proposal on Tapas Ink! It was the second KDrama webcomic I read, and I love it. I'm glad the adaption seems good. They made interesting changes to Secretary Cha and Yeongsuh's relationship, I'm surprised they didn't change the most controversial thing that I disliked, which was their sex scene. I think they also got rid of Hari's little brother, who currently has an ongoing love subplot with Yeongsuh's cousin after crushing on Yeongsuh for so long.

I decided to watch it as three of the four leads I had seen in other shows over the past couple of years (I’ve gotten quite into Korean shows over the last few years it seems like I’m always watching one at least a couple of times a week whereas before that I had watched one and that was five years ago 😮).
I loved it, funnily enough I started it just after I finished Strong Girl Bong-soon (which is the show I knew Young-seo from) and other than the fact that the latter involves a girl with super strength the shows are quite similar in that you have a “common” girl whose parents own a place you get food from who winds up working for a guy that completely falls for her while she is oblivious to the fact for a bit as she has a huge crush on another guy 😂 (I loved both shows 😄)

This was also the first i was absolutely obsessed with the side characters romance too! That just shows how amazing the whole story was and how perfectly everything just got together. I also lovee that we didn't get to see a wedding, idk i just feel like the story ended just at the perfect time!
