  • Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 15:00. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson teaching my version of a traditional fiddle standard, "Bile Them Cabbage," a.k.a. "Bile 'Em Cabbage Down," "Boil That Cabbage Down," etc. It's usually played on fiddle in the key of A with lots of double stops and shuffles, and can go quite fast. There have been a ton of versions, among my favorites being the Smothers Brothers' comedy version from 1963 (watch for pumas):
    • Smothers Brothers Cabb...
and Clayton McMichen's super fast version from 1937:
    • Bile Dem Cabbage Down ...
As usual I teach the tune lick by lick, line by line, providing on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts. I also teach it in two parts, parts A and B, similar to Cripple Creek, Old Joe Clark, Blackberry Blossom and many other fiddle tunes.
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, littlerockbanjo.com.
    Hope you enjoy.
I have posted this teaching video for instructional purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use:

Really enjoyed this one. So many “beginners versions” ( I must have at least five), seem to lack lustre. Like the second part 2-3 hammer ons, helps give the song a bit more interesting feel. I really appreciate how much I’ve learned from your videos. Being a Brit & trying to learn songs that aren’t known to me has been at times, daunting to say the least. Learning at home with pages of tab’s that don’t give a ‘feel’ for the energy of the music is like looking at a wall of common bricks.
A huge thank you for helping me along my journey, very much appreciated.

Them cabbage turn into bile after you eat them🤣 I found how you place your pinky next to the bridge interesting. As a 4 week beginner I’m still struggling with where it’s most comfortable. I have even taped my ring finger and pinky together to try to train them to stay together. I’m 60 so it’s gonna take some time. I like your teaching method.

boiled cabbage becomes rather sweet like cooked onions, and so it make chitterlings, and other bullshit meat given to them, a rather good soup that they ate nearly 100% of the time with a normal meal once a month or so
