- Hear this tune played with guitar rhythm backup (slow, medium, fast) starting at 12:21. Guitar chords are provided on-screen.
This is an instructional tutorial 5-string bluegrass banjo lesson demonstrating the popular bluegrass banjo instrumental, "Pike County Breakdown." The tune is attributed to Rupert Jones, a name which is usually considered a pseudonym for Bill Monroe. It was released on record in 1952 by Monroe, and, later the same year, by Flatt and Scruggs (who attributed it to Monroe by name). The Scruggs version is what I base my version on.
On this video I teach the tune lick by lick, phrase by phrase, using on-screen tablature, then I put it together -- slowly at first, then faster toward the end, adding rhythm guitar audio overlay and on-screen chord prompts.
Free tab sheets (PDF) and play-along tracks (MP3) for this and many other tunes are available at my website, www.littlerockbanjo.com.
Hope you enjoy. Be patient with yourself and work diligently, focusing extra time on the more difficult passages.

Best banjo tutorial I have ever seen ! I've been playing a long time, and have seen a lot of them but this is so thorough, perfect camera angles, broken into easily comprehended segments, and the rhythm tracks at the end with progressively increased is speed, is brilliant. Thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
Yep bill is top class
@@Xyppe2 well it’s back on thanks
Thanks Mr. Nesbitt . I like clean and crisp over speed ..
Hello William, nice video, easy and very clearly explained, as always. I, here in Argentina to all those who ask me about the banjo, and if there is a teacher here, I always tell them, here, very hard to find, but in the USA, look for William Nesbitt on RUclips, it's the best !! !, Strong hug for you, and THANKS !!!, as always from Buenos Aires., José Luis.
Really Stephen, I think it's like that !! It is even clear when he explains the class, because he does not speak fast and in a fairly clear English for me, obviously you understand it even better, than me, hahaha !. Sorry for my bad english. I was study english, (of england, not american), in the school, and have 73 years old, hahaha !!. Big Hug, and God Bless You, from Buenos Aires, José Luis.
Stephen Foreman he’s good
Thanks Bill for your kind reply.I've got my Blue Chip JD Crowe thumb pick on order.I doubt it'll get me to your standard, but I'll keep on keeping on.Thanks also for your great and easy to follow videos, much appreciated.
I love it! Starting to play it now. This will be a very good lesson to practice the slide, hammer & licks and then jump into a fast arpeggio of rapid fire notes. Perfect, thanks again Bill!!!

Awesome tutorial, very nice! Is there a possibility if you could teach *Earl's Breakdown* ? I absolutely love that song, it's my favourite banjo song.
Any chance you could do Flint Hill Special? Your teaching style is amazing. Thank you for all of the videos. Many a banjo player have learned so much from them.

Hi great video have you heard the version Flatt and Scruggs do on vol 9 of their dvd series he throws in a alternate lick before and after the single note run I really like it but can’t pick it up myself if you do know it maybe you could post a version thank you for your time I really like this song
Banjo has a distinct sound . Sorta like ejecting a fired shell and a new round slides into the chamber .its known . Next time you’re standing next to a river or a creek with your friends just say “ I suddenly hear banjo playing “ and see if they run ha ha hahahahuhuhu
How do you like the thumb pick pro pick ?
