- Tetanus is a serious bacterial infection. The bacteria could infect any cut, burn, or skin puncture. Commonly known as “lockjaw,” tetanus causes painful muscle spasms in the jaw, neck, and stomach area, as well as other serious symptoms. If left untreated, tetanus can be fatal. Fortunately, several vaccines protect people of all age groups against this infectious disease.
“Step on a dirty nail or needle, suffer a burn or crush injury, or simply have a wound that is contaminated with dirt, feces, or spit, and you have a recipe for disaster,” says Tyler, Texas family physician and Texas Medical Association (TMA) physician leader Li-Yu Mitchell, MD.
This release is part of a monthly TMA series highlighting contagious diseases that childhood and adult vaccinations can prevent. Some diseases covered thus far include Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Whooping Cough, Rotavirus and Polio.
Most doctors have never seen a single case of tetanus. Many will not detect localized tetanus, and you will have to research on your own to find out what is wrong with you.
Yo my pinky toe got scartched by a concrete and it bled too much but the good thing is i took a tetanus shot last 5 years i think am i gon die?
@@mr.rajonop9831 not if you got the tetanus shot 5 years ago. You should be fine
@@poe- oh god thankyou you're a lifesaver
@@poe- why is it 5 years ago it thought tetanus lasted 10 years 🤔
@@deadchannel6455 the tetanus shot lasts 10 years but on the safe side you should get a shot after 8 to 9 years.
Got a tetanus toxoid shot last february 2021. I got wounded by our rusty gate on two separate occasions, first was last nov. 3 and the other was nov. 12. Should I get another shot?
Cut myself with a compass but it wasnt rusty. Shoukd i be worried?
hello there good day, I got my Tetanus toxoid single shot lasy year Aug 2023 coz i was scratched by a rat, then now after 6 months (Feb 2024) I got a scratched from duck's sharper nail and bleed a lil, i washed it properly and cleaned. Do I need to take another one Tetanus Toxoid shot for only 6 months past? Thanks for answering and helping me.
Is it possible for tetanus to last for months and progressively get worse?
I got the most minuscule cut, and I got localized tetanus. The sooner the symptoms show up, the more severe it is. My symptom showed up immediately, I got localized tetanus in my pinky finger. It took me 8.5 months to fully recover.
I got my Tdap shot 2 days after getting cut.
What were the symptoms? Like, should I go to the doctor?
@@Marjannuel I first felt a tingling feeling, really fast heartbeat, irritability (I got mad easily around people), and 2-3 days later, I felt muscle spasms going through my right hand. The sunlight or light would trigger it. It hurt a lot, and I could not spread some of my fingers for months. When I slept, I had no muscle spasms (very painful feeling like burning feeling) shooting through my whole hand.
If you have not gotten your tetanus shot in 10 years, you need to get your shot. I think 10 years is too long, I would say every 8-9 years, you should get your tetanus shot.
@@poe4669 oh ok, thanks, I was just worried cause I got cut a while ago, the place were dirty like a playground. I'll seek doctor when a symptom show up, but for now I'll just self assess. After the cut I poured a rubbing alcohol and washed it with soap. I also let it breeze with the wind just in case cause they say that the bacteria or something is anaerobic. Anyways, thanks for the reply
@@poe4669 bro are you educated
I get a million cuts all the time doing electrical and rennos why hasn't this happened to me
Lucky.
I was at my cabin this a few weekends ago and was ripping apart a old fence to build a new one, one of the old post came back at me and almost hit a bone in my finger. 1 week later it was turning green, growing huge and leaking liquid and was getting massive muscle spasm's all over. Tetanus shot and some anti-biotics later it was fine.
Because you’re vaccinated. Everyone born in America after 1940 gets the vaccine. Look up your shot records.
@@mother2261 who do I contact for that. New to being an adult I'm not sure where to look.
@@nowayjose5466 hi. You can go to your primary doctor and ask for a tetanus shot. If you don’t have a Dr. Then just look up any healthcare clinics in your area. Call and ask if they give tetanus shots and what the price is. Your local health department will probably offer them there as well. And it might be free. Some vaccinations are free at the health department. Tetanus shot is good for 10 years.
I stepped on a nail, it's not that deep but it hurts so bad...
And tomorrow we will go to Beach is it okay??? I got vaccinated Last year
It can be transmitted through person who is dx of tetanus to person with open wound?
Like contact? Person with tetanus to a person with open wound?
I stepped on a stupid rusty barb wire in the grass because my neighbor is a junk shop, it only dripped a single blood. And it wasn't as deep since my slippers are kinda thick. Should i get a shot?
The shot last 9-10 years so you definitely should get one lol
Tetanus is a medical emergency requiring:
Care in the hospital.Immediate treatment with medicine called human tetanus immune globulin (TIG).Aggressive wound care.Drugs to control muscle spasms.Antibiotics.Tetanus vaccination.Depending on how serious the infection is, a machine to help you breathe may be required.
can i still get tetanus even after getting vaccinated 8 years ago? and that was when I was around 11-12 years old, I'm now 19
plss answer bcos I have one
Same
I got cut by a rusty nail just now. Last shot was 11 years ago, do i still need a shot?
If you're still alive now a couple months after posting that comment without any symptoms then I'd say you're OK lol
@@Roger__Wilco hahaha i wouldve gotten the shot for sure
I was moving some wood in a bon fire with a rust rod of metal and I scraped my thumb, tiny piece of skin came off and no blood, should I be worried?
Depends, make sure to apply antibiotic cream to the wound and wrap it tightly. After at least a day, unwrap and examine it. If it looks like normal skin, re apply the cream and re wrap the wound. If it is covered in pus, or looks infected you should proablly get it looked at by a doctor.
I had taken tetnus vaccine 6 months ago and today I got injury should I take vaccine or not
You probably won’t need it. Vaccines are good for 10 years. Before they start to wear off again.
@@mother2261 thank you
My nails in my foot scratched may thigh skin, is it fine?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
If you don't know when you had your tetanus shot, then go and get one. If you had the shot more than 10 years ago, then you get the tetanus booster shot or tDap shot.
@@poe- thank youu
Unless your nails are covered in poop or dirt you dont need one.
So if I accidentally stabbed myself about a half inch with a sharp metal object that I was using to clean my nails, should I go get a tetanus shot? Only one drop of blood came out but it felt deep.
If you haven't had a tetanus shot in 10 years... get the shot.
U ok rn ?
youre game over maan
If i had my last booster shot 9 months ago, do i need a new one for my injury.I cut myself with a nail covered in dirt
I had a cut, its not deep and the metal is not that rusty either should i be worried?
You can get tetanus from almost any cut. It doesn't have to be a rusted blade.
Tetanus should be considered to be in every item that's even a lil bit rusty until proven that it's not infected.
How to test with tetanus
There is no test. You have to go off the symptoms you have.
What if your immune to tetanus, I think i might be immune.
Why do you think that?
Nobody is immune to tetanus. If the tetanus spore hatches from the hard shell, you are in big trouble.
@@davidelibasci6932 lol
Why wouldn't my immune system just take care of the bacteria? That's why we have an immune system right? Humans have been getting cuts from all sorts of things since the beginning of time way before the tetanus shot. So why hasn't the human species become extinct yet?
I think that it is because with tetanus it is so deep in there that there is no other way to take care of the bacteria, but i could be wrong
Oh i got one lets see now. Why won't uncle Glen's hunting riffle just take care of itself, why does it need a regular full barrel gun oil maintenance every now and then. I mean its a riffle it's supposed to fire right no matter if there is some gun powder residue in there , nothing which it cant handle right?
