    A handy hint for your scan n cut mats, I use paper to mask the edges and spray with basting spray, let it dry and the mat is good as new again, near 4 years on I’m still using my original 2 mats

    • @dorisosborne132

      When you say use paper to mask the edges. Are you talking about the fabric edges you put paper then spray basting spray on the paper before you place on fabric edge’s. Thank you for a reply.

      @@dorisosborne132 - hi, this is for making the mat tacky again, the paper covers the edges of the mat, ie the parts I don’t want sticky, this protects it from the spray so only the middle get coated.

    I wish I had seen your video before. Today I did my first applique!!. It was a disaster. I put heat and bond light on the back of main fabric and placed it on the sdx fabric mat, not realising I should have taken the paper off first before placing the fabric on the mat. Oh dear, it was a complete mess. Took me ages to clean the mat and at the time I wasn’t even sure what I had done wrong. Now I know thanks to you.xx

    I love your Design they look absolutely amazing, your video was great thank you very much for sharing.😀 I must say I love my brother scan and cut. 🌼 I give a mat just for fabric and label it fabric, there is fabric support sheet from brother, it should come with the machine tho, its the same size as your mat so you can put that on your old mat and your mat will be useable again, you can just leave it on and change the sheet when necessary, it holds fabric well. I have a dedicated blade just for fabric and that helps them last a lot longer. Hope you dont mind me putting this, just thought it might help someone 😀 and a way to keep your old mat😅😅🌻 Thank you for the video and taking the time to make it.

I think they will help anyone who comes along who is just getting started, so THANK YOU for sharing!!

    I enjoyed the video. I don’t have this scan and cut system but it looks great. I was interested in the backing being used for binding. Great job. I watched that part twice but didn’t hear how much backing to leave around the outside..it appears two inches..one inch folded first then over onto the quilt. Do you always use the same amount of fabric for the binding..the two inches on each side? Thanks.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 лет назад

    Hello there this is my first time I have been on your channel and just looking at how you clean your mat which is Brilliant but can you use a Hairdryer to dry it quicker please

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  4 года назад

      hmmmm......I've never used a hair dryer before on my mat. Perhaps if you have a cool setting on your dryer that would work well. I think I'd be scared to put any heat to it.

    HI! Does the heat and bond make your blades sticky? Have you used steam a seam on fabrics when cutting it? Thanks!

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 лет назад

      Nope, the Heatnbond doesn't gum up your blades :) I haven't used Steam a Seam yet

    I love your videos! This brother scan and cut was my first cutting machine... I've added on with others and it hasn't gotten to use that it should lately but I'll have to crack it out to do this project. I also just started with my Bernina 700 and I am loving it so far! Just one quick question... I have that extreme glue that I've used for other projects but does it really hold without any stitching? And it's machine washable? Or do we really need to top Stitch through it? Glad I found you I've learned so very much!

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for watching my video Nancy! Hmm......I've never used the extreme glue without stitching down the applique....I'm thinking the edges would fray over time. I think using HeatnBond Lite and stitching gives me the best application, however if you want to avoid stitching all together try using HeatnBond in the red package :)

      @@TheQuiltmakerHomestead thanks so much for your response I think I confused both you and myself! I was talking about the glue at the very end with the binding ... I just re-watched it and realized you did say to do a straight Stitch over it... My bad!

    I just bought the new Scan N Cut DX with the "F" at the end of the number. I have not opened it yet because I want to BE SURE it can cut fabric that has the applique adhesive (heat and bond or other) on the back of it. I watched a lady who said you could not cut fabric that has adhesive on it with the "F" machine. Do you know about the new machine? Also, were you putting the fabric side down or the adhesive side down on that mat?

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  3 года назад

      Hi Joy, I'd love to see the video you mentioned and to see why they say you can not have a fusible on your fabric. I don't have this machine, but I just looked at the specs. There is an Auto blade....and then a Thin Auto Blade. It looks like when using the thin auto blade, it only cuts fabric for piecing, so no fusible. But the regular auto blade cuts up to 3mm thickness......so why can't use use this blade for cutting fusible applique?? Because applique is one of my favorite quilting techniques, this would be a deal breaker for me if this wasn't an option. Since you have the machine I'd call directly to Brother and ask the source to verify :) and I laid my pieces, fusible side down on my mat.

      Just an FYI there is another couple of ladies that I've been watching as well and they both put their print side of their fabric on the mat with the heat and bond with paper still on it up then peel the paper off after they've cut their pieces. Their technique seems to work well for them.

    Merry Christmas early! Thanks for this tut. I have one of the original ScanNCut ModelCM550. Sadly I have been unable to use mine as much as I had wanted due to Health issues the past 5 years. I am now trying to fig out since then new models, which are so much better have been developed. What is different between the CM550 and what you were showing us in this Demo.? I have all the mats, have used my machine some but been awhile, and I am now wondering what has change so I can adept the tuts to my Original machine. I know my blades are new that I have, But do you think my Inks are maybe dried out? My one mat (Standard) needs cleaning so that I understand (Time for a trip to Dollar Tree ) for supplies of Baby wipes. Can I get upgrades for the making the patterns etc. Any advise will help. I had not stopped Purchasing Fabric just not using my machine And now I could open a Fabric stor of my own in my craft room I am 73 so need to de-clutter and make all my projects I purchased Fab. for. If You understand what I mean. You have explained this model easy for all to understand and pointed out why you do what you and machine do, Answer if you can or where I can get the info. I also scrap-book and am way behind on that also.

      Merry Christmas Pam! To be really 100% honest, I am using the CM350 and have really only studied up on this model and have not compared it to the CM550, so at this molement I'm not sure as to what changed between the two???? I wish I could help more, I'd need to go do some research first hehehee. If you have markers for that model, give them a test on some scrap paper....they may still work if they were closed up well. You may be able to upgrade your software to Brother Canvasworkspace...I like using the online version. I am quite sure you can use the CM550 to make ALL OF THE PROJECTS that you are wanting to create.....if you run into any specific questions about functions, send me a line and I'll try looking up the process and lend a helping hand. You can email me at lisacapenquilts@gmail.com

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 лет назад

      I've used polyester thread many times without any issues :) If you have a particular thread you are concerned about, how about stitching some on a scrap, cover it with another scrap and give it a press and see how it acts before using it in your projects. This may give you peace of mind about using a favorite pretty thread :)

I’m not sure what the “SVG” file is exactly 🤷‍♀️I don’t have a scanning mat one didn’t come with my machine can I use my low tack mat to scan & do I need to put the clear sheet over it that I would normally take off to cut ?.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  2 года назад

      that's exciting Sherry!! Yes, you can trace an image...scan it and then cut it. The svg is a file format for the image.....it plots it out telling the cutting blade a direction to go, like a road map :) I don't have a scanning mat either. Sometimes I put my paper in a clear page protector, like for binders. That way the copy paper doesn't stick to the mat.

    When you did the embroidery of names, did you then put it in a hoop or how did you do this part. This is where I am confused because I would like to personalize them but not sure how to proceed. Do you have a video on this or maybe you could create one as to what stabilizer, etc. You do a great job explaining everything. Thanking you in advance.

    • @TheQuiltmakerHomestead
      @TheQuiltmakerHomestead  5 лет назад

      I stitched the name after I did the quilting and stitching down of all of my pieces and before I layered the mug rug with batting and backing. I hooped the top of the mug rug and used a light weight stabilizer that tears away when it's finished. I do look forward to doing many more videos on this, probably after the new year. Thank you so much for watching!
