Style O v Lightnin

- Comparing a vintage 1930 National Style "O" with a modern reproduction Michael Messer Lightnin' (2008). Both have National Resophonic Hot-Rod cones in them and Stew Mac Golden Age Restoration tuners (all were necessary replacements !).
Both guitar bodies are nickel-plated brass bodies. A fair comparison I think.
Very impressed with how the MM sounds, compared to the real deal-definitely holds its own! Nice playing too!
nice playing. It is harder to slide in standard tuning and it is hard to slide without looking. You have got the real deal.
I have a video (not brilliant - picture quality not fantastic, and I mumble a fair bit) where I show how I play slide guitar in standard tuning - using my right thumb to dampen unwanted strings above the one I want to play, and my right-hand small fingers to dampen unwanted strings below the string I want to play. Might look complicated at first but soon becomes easy to do - for sounding more controlled, blocking out unwanted notes that don't fit.

Very useful and entertaining vid I particularily the playing style of not looking at the fret board as an old blind blues street player would have done. Cheers fae the Highlands lad.

No, I don't have any CD's. Perhaps I'll eventually get around to doing it - my bandmate has certainly been talking about it recently.

just brilliant! :-) I'd be at lost to tell which guitar sounds better than the other... Given that the national must be worth at least 4 times the price of the MM, that says a lot about the quality of the latest, or to my capacity to ear properly :-) At any rate, congrats on your great playing!

Great guitars and great playing! The sound quality makes it difficult to hear the real difference between these two guitars although I suspect you think MM is on to something with the Lightning? I personally would like to see more videos from you as you have great honesty in your presentation and the playing speaks for itself!

NICE Snake. I think the style O sounds a LITTLE better IMO. I played a vintage weissenborn in Chicago at the music exchange, and that thing blows the doors off any of my newer lap slide guitars.

Ok, maybe the National sounds a little better, but compare the price between these two. What a difference!
Makes me wonder if the tone of the Lightning will improve and open up more over the years? Not that it sounded bad at all in comparison.
