You need to cover the fill holes to keep algae from firming. Use panty hose or wig cap pieces to cover them. It will let air in but not bugs or algae.

The pots are under cover so rain shouldn't be a problem when it arrives

What do you think plants are doing when you put them in soil? They're talking out the nutrients that they need to grow!!

The same stuff they spray on the fields to grow the stuff in the salad you are eating right now. The difference is the nutrients are dissolved in water and immediately available to the roots, resulting in amazing growth. Water usage is less than soil. There is less danger of soil borne disease and insects. Less need for pesticides and tremendous yeild.

And then they die in 4 days. Roots need oxygen, standing water is devoid of oxygen. Add an aquarium pump attached to an air stone to bubble the water continuously. pH is also of the highest importance in a system like this, you'll definitely need a pH probe to ensure the pH is in a range the dissolved minerals are bio-available to your plants.

The roots get oxygen. It’s in the bucket. You don’t fill it to the top. If you use a pump and the power goes out your plants will die. This is not standing stagnant water. It’s static water filled with nutrients.
Use the system before you speak out against it. Try it. It works.

The plants create air roots to get oxygen. I have seen this in my Kratky buckets. I have a number of plants growing in 5 gallon buckets with holes in the side for the plants. As long as I remember to add water when low, they survive. I do add fertilizer, but I do not have an air pump nor do I measure pH, EH, or anything else. But algae can be a problem.

No, the plants don't die in four days. Maybe for you they did. Tell us what you did so we can tell you what you did wrong. This method is well known and gets great results, so again, you must have done something wrong.

Sound you had a bad experience with kratky, I've also learned couple hard lessons, but kratky is very doable, just big learning curve
