I have so much respect and admiration for your passion. Also the videos you make are so in depth, sometimes with repetitions and emphasis on important points, which other videos don't. This basically means from users perspective lesser cognition overload and easier pace to follow those points and register :) So I don't have keep rewinding the video. thank you so much for your efforts. I am currently having a Japanese red maple tree in a pot and thinking of air layering a branch for the next 2 years for a nice bonsai. I already took your tips and repotted my larch bonsai.
I love this channel. Mr. Chan has given me so much information on the life of trees and their roots! I have been able to improve my success rate in cuttings, growth rate, shape, and vigor in not only my trees but my whole landscape and garden! Thank you so much Mr. Chan for sharing your vast knowledge of trees with us, and your love and passion for life and beauty!
I think I have seen all of your videos by now. Thank You Mr Chan for these uploads. They answer so many questions I have and leave me with still so much to wonder.
I love the way you explained n the chlorophyll that causes the color changes and the lovely birds singing in the background really make this video enjoyable. I’m glad I did not fall for the ad in Craigslist that was for seeds for a blue and purple Japanese maple seeds, they were $20 dollars and I had no knowledge that this was a lie and I was even willing to drive 2.5 hours from Roseville to San Jose California, I’m glad I did not waste my time. Such beautiful shades in this clip
I've just been waiting for the spring and then gathering the tiny red maple plants and putting them in pots. I will be sowing the seeds this fall now that Peter has shown me how to do it correctly.
Thank you! I have this small Mame sized Maple I bought last spring. It's from Iseli Nurseries in Oregon and was simply labelled "Mini Maple". This spring since it started budding out, it has exhibited exactly the same color presentation and transformation that your Deshojo maples show. Bright pink to red then fading to green-red (so far). I'm now positive that my Mame is a Deshojo. Thank you again for this very informative and instructive video.
This was very interesting and insightful. I've been interested in bonsai since I got my first juniper bonsai as a teen. Sadly, I've tried a few times since to grow them. And failed. Now 30 years later, and much greener thumbs, I'm hoping to try again and succeed! But am watching your videos (since I'm a visual learner) and taking notes before the attempt! But the natural science behind color changing leaves is fascinating! Thank you for taking your time to make this video!
Well guess he says this for a reason the images you see online of these trees do not show how green and pink and white they will actually look in the end
What an amazing channel. Your garden looks like heaven on earth! Thank you for sharing all these precious information. Please could you also tell us what colour they finally turn into in autumn/ winter? Thank you so much. 🙏
Lovely Peter. I saw you met with a fellow RUclipsr, Jason Hanrahan from the bonsai garden yesterday. Lovely man. I hope to meet with you myself sometime in August. 👍👍👍
Lovely lovely red colouring on the maples! I hope to have a Deshojo one day, but not sure if they would survive the Finnish weather. Good quality video, thanks for starting to use microphone too, with those planes about it was sometimes hard to hear what you were saying :) Million bows and thank yous!
What ??? I bought some "Rainbow" Maple seed and been waiting for it to grow ...lol. Thank you Peter! I love your channel, its very informative for a newbie like my self.
Where in Australia you are from mate? I have shin deshojo grafted with maple, it yet produces the same color leaves as deshojo, you can easily find them from nurseries in Victorian and NSW.
Beautiful video and I love that you are a real teacher Mr Chan, like I remember from university, it must be an amazing experience to attend one of your workshops in your nursery. After watching your vides on maple bonsai, I rescued a little maple forest from our local nursery, I’m pretty sure it’s a deshojo, but the leaves were scorched, stained from fertiliser water, all in that greenish-rusty stage but absolutely beautiful form (to my uneducated eye) so I removed the most damaged leaves (after watching your video) and now I’m looking forward to seeing what emerges! I would like to ask for your advice if I may. The foliage on the maple in front of your home looks very healthy, is it in full sun? How much wind does it get? I have a little maple dissectum garnet growing here in my coastal garden (Southern UK) and it’s doing great, it’s in full sun and we get high winds but usually during dormant season. Reading online advice about non-dissectum Japanese maples they always warn about how sensitive they are to leaf scorch so while I really want more maple trees, I don’t want them to suffer. Do you have any advice for me? Thank you.
Yah man rasta blood, greetings mi brethren. Nice video again, me learning all the time. You have cool collection of bonsai. In jamaica we no have good bonsai place
Some beautiful trees there, I find it hard to get good acer stock to turn into bonsai as most of them at nursery’s are grafted so would look terrible, I’ve considered purchasing larger trees and doing a major trunk chop but not knowing if maple will back bud well? Thanks for your videos Rob
Peter I was wondering if it might be possible to make a video just about deshojo maples in particular the special care as they are more sensitive than other maples types 🙏🏻 maintenance, hardiness etc.
I have a Crimson King maple and it is sometimes so dark that it just looks purple. I can only imagine that most people call crimson kings purple. But I have never heard of blue colored maples ever.
Please let us know how can we thicken the maple trunk. I bought deshodo from clippings. Very skinny. I am hoping to thicken the trunk. And most of all winter care please. I am in Alberta canada.
I planted a few red maple seedlings in February but they don't seem to have grown since the end of March. They're about 5 cm big and have their first and second set of leaves. Last year I had some too and they grew to 15 cm in the first two months. Do you have any suggestions on what might be holding them down?
Colder spring? Anyway considering it takes a couple of decades for a tree to grow to a good size ten cm in height now won’t make any difference in the final result. Keep them watered and fed and check for eventual parasites. Have a nice day.
@@peterchan3100 thank you again, I gave my seedlings a bit of compost, and a sand and fertilized soil mix and since then they've grown a bit faster in the past four days.
I thought that leaves in maple trees turn red in winter, fall off, then the tree grow new (green!) leaves in spring. So I'm guessing this is a different variety or it leave dropping depends on the weather
I you leave the maples outside don't the roots freeze? I live in Michigan in the U.S.A. and anything I leave outside I have been burying in my raised garden beds and they do pretty good only lost a couple this year. But if I leave them out unprotected the roots freeze and the trees die.
Hello, I bought a Japanese maple "beni chidori" and its leaves are completely green at the beginning of June. Is this possible or have I been misled? Thank you very much for your attention.
Hi Herons love your videos on maples...Question? what kind of fertilizer do you use on your deshone maples? and how often ? It's good to know that there is no blue or purple maples tku dj
Can you clarify why my maple leaves stay red for only about 2 weeks and after that they turn green and all matured leave are green. I dont know why they stay red for a short period and stay green most of the time.
i'm growing what I believed is a red maple from seed. It is around half a year old and it has only green leaves. Is it possible that it will turn red with time or is it not a red maple?
Hey Peter, first I wanna thank you for the videos, they are really inspiring. I wanted to ask though, do you have any tips for either air layering or otherwise growing the various cultivars of maple such as shiana or inaba shidari? I saw your airlayering video but I wasn't sure if it applies to the weeping and witch broom cultivars or if one would have to leave the air layer longer and winter in a green house for an extra year or something along those lines. As far as I can tell you are one of the world's best japanese maples growers and I am extremely curious for input. As well, do you know of any Japanese maples (or maples in general) that can survive in zone 4? I myself am in a zone 5 but we sometimes experience cold flashes and hot periods in my area and I am looking for weather hardy maples I can grow if my attempts at japanese maples in Colorado keep failing. Anyway, even if you don't respond we all appreciate your videos and hope to see more, so thank you again!
I will be doing another video on Air layering soon. Look out for it. But all maples will air layer in the same way. Some though are faster to root than others - Shishigashira and Benichi Dori are very quick.
Hi Dustin, I am not familiar with the climate where you live but most maples grow well in Zone 4. Check with your local nursery people and they can advise you better. Most maple varieties air layer easily so dont worry and Yes a greenhouse is very useful in Autumn and Spring as it can prolong the growing period quite considerably. Hope my answers help.
24 years doing bonsai and I’m still learning thank you peter keep up the good work

One should always use Botanical names not common names like the guy who is selling Blue maples and Purple Maples using my videos!
I find many people think they have a new verity but most don’t majority are a common verity just with different fertilizer/ medium difference
Even the most popular Bloodgood if you notice it , the larger inner leaf is a dark green color
Can’t deny the striking colour of those deshojo 😍
Surprisingly good quality filming. Thank you. I just bought one yesterday.
Was done by me on my old iPhone 6.
Thank you Peter. Enjoyed it very much.
Hi peter them big dehojo's are specimens everyone of them you are a legend! My own deshojo's are looking beautiful. Thank you Peter.

Great that your putting regular you tube content on now , love watching your videos very inspirational and informative 👍🙂
Excellent videography and clarification. I am a recent Maple fan and you clarified all my doubts.

Your camera work is better than that of your usual cameraman, no doubt because you have a more refined aesthetic.
Everyone has a different way of looking at things.
Those are really beautiful Maples Peter! Thank you for the video!
How dare that blue maple guy!!! Thanks for the Deshojo explanation.
Still trying to get him taken off FB and You tube,
You can get pink and and yellow maples too tho btw and ones with white spots which can even make them look entirely white for periods of time
Well guess he says this for a reason the images you see online of these trees do not show how green and pink and white they will actually look in the end
Nah Im discerning you there’s a guy in my town with a maple tree that is indefinitely pink right now it looks damn pink like not red in the slightest

They are some seriously beautiful trees... maples tend not to grow too well in the tropics however :(
Dear Mr Chan, could you help to explain the key differences in a Shin Deshojo and a Deshojo? We are trying to select one for our garden. Thank you.
Can u make a video how to make small leaves? Mine are so big compair to the trunk.
I did talk briefly about leaf pruning in the last video I put out a week ago about Maple Pruning. Look at it carefully.

Air layer it, if you have bit tree just air layer that and you will be fine.
All maples will back bud when chopped hard back.

Could you comment about sun exposure on your maples particularly the poted palmatums? Nice video, thx u.
Maples should be grown in full sun and not in shade.

Hi Peter, sorry silly question- how do you tell a Deshojo maple from a regular Japanese Maple?
the leaf shape and bark colour is slightly different.

I wish it was possible to ship to the US

Sadly No

Beautiful plants, what soil type do you use to grow them. do you use the same mixture as used for the Bonsai?
Most plants will grow in just plain mud.
Hi sir, just a quick question, What is the difference between Deshojo and Shin-deshojo?
When I used to visit Japan I did ask the maples growing this question and most of them said that there is no difference.
How long are you willing to work with individuals if they fly over to learn under you? Keep up the great material!!👍👍
The last time we had 3 fans from the US, I did classes for 3 days. But I can tailor the learning for each individual. Why dont you email me direct.
