  • SpaceX cuts into Starlink internet hardware by 50%! I predicted this day would come many months ago. I said unlike ALL other IPSs (Internet Service Providers) that only know how to increase their prices over time, Elon Musk's SpaceX Starlink would be different. As SpaceX Starlink becomes more profitable and begins to understand the market and what its potential customers are willing to pay, Starlink's prices will go down. This is exactly what is happening today.
    Do you currently have Starlink?
    If not, will this massive price reduction entice you to make the move?

      No, Starlink is taking advantage of Americans. Look at the fees for other countries. The price is not commensurate with the level-of-service for fixed service application. While waiting for Starlink, fiber was run to my very rural address. My 1 Gig fiber service that consistently runs closer to 2 Gig is just under HALF what I am paying for my grandfathered residential Starlink plan with portability. At my home address, Starlink bandwidth is horrendous during peak hours when I need it to work so I cannot rely on it at home. When I'm traveling in our RV and working, it works great... Funny thing, Starlink claims my area is congested, but that's suspect as rarely do I see another Dishy and the entire county now has fiber access at lower cost!

      @jonathannumer5415 21 день назад +3

      Competitive? I have used the competition… and you get what you pay for… I’ll be honest. With the other satellite services I was paying near as much and running out of data halfway through the month just watching RUclips and a few streaming shows

    • @gregf1299
      @gregf1299 21 день назад

      Agreed. Fiber and cable are cheaper and often very high bandwidth, but maybe that crowded urban market is not what starlink is targeting. In rural areas you can expect to pay more for the infrastructure.
      BTW, one way starlink can compete better is to bundle some TV channel options. With NBA and RUclips TV my bill was almost $100 a month...add your other subscriptions and it's getting ridiculous.

    • @YinLawn
      @YinLawn 21 день назад

      @@jonathannumer5415 Agree. I think the issue is not competitivenss. The issue is affordability. Even if they have no competition, some people just can't afford it. Actually, they can probably do some kind of pricing variation. For example, if your income is low, you get a low income discount. This way, they can add more subscriblers without dropping the price.

      In my current location, DSL is all that is available. Current speed is 20mbps plus phone service for which we pay close to the amount Starlink charges. The cost of the hardware is pretty much the only thing preventing me from going with Starlink. If they dropped the price for that, plus lowered the monthly charge, I'd sign up in a heartbeat. We're supposed to be having fiber installed in the area, which could theoretically deliver higher speeds, but I think we're way down the priority list.

Fiber cable is being installed in our area as I type and should be available for service in a month or two at a rate of $69.95 a month vs. my $120/mo. with Starlink (I started out at $99.00/mo.). Yessir I certainly agree, Starlink does need to lower their monthly subscription fees…even if it’s only a $10 drop. We live in the middle of nowhere and our only options for internet is Hughesnet and Starlink. Choosing Starlink was a simple decision, I just wish the price was a little lower.
    Personally I’d rather pay $600 for equipment and have a lower monthly subscription fee than pay $200 for the equipment and have to continue paying the $120. It may not make sense to others for me wanting that, but look at it this way….im planning on staying with Starlink for the next 6, 8, 10 years or longer. By paying a little lower monthly fee I’ll be saving quite a bit by the time 6 years has passed. I’m in it for the long haul….UNLESS something cheaper and more reliable comes along. I live on a fixed income and it doesn’t allow me any extra cash for anything….so I’m going to do whatever I have to in order to make my life a little easier.
    Thank you for keeping us in the loop sir, may God bless your family with abundance!
    Sincerely,
    Donnie

    How about $400(or less) for the "kit" and $100/month for service. I live in West Chester, OH and have fiber available, BUT we have a vacation home in south central OH, which currently has Viasat. We checked and Verizon/Earthlink available IF we string 3/4 mile of new phone lines or fiber for at least $800. Starlink would be an option for a "reasonable price".

    I think the monthly fee is also a big hurdle for a lot of people. If they could get it down to $80/month for at home service, it would still be a bit more then other broadband service but much more affordable. The price needs to be just high enough to keep people that have other broadband options from soaking up all the capacity that rural people need.

    You are correct in your assessment. Space-X Starlink Systems are like razors. You have to pay for the system (the Razor). However, Starlink makes its money on the Razor Blades (the monthly subscription). $299.00 would be my limit now because I really don't need it -- it would be a nice to have, but I have pretty good internet. If I really needed it, maybe $399.00 for the system. But what is the monthly subscription. There are many remote areas in the U.S. that need this service. I am an American that moved to the Philippines. There are many places here that could use Starlink. However, $599 would be way out of their price range. I think $299 would be the max they could pay here, unless you are one of the few fortunate people. Those with money live in the big cities here, and they have good internet.

    I'm a vacation RV'er looking at purchasing backup internet access when I'm in areas that VZW is poorly represented. I'd snatch up a Roam in a hot minute if the price was ~$350 and the monthly membership was under $100 bucks (while retaining the ability to pause). $499 (current pricing) is better than $599, but that monthly charge is awful even if I can pause it.
    Especially in light of my using the service for a week or so per month that I'd light it up; we don't RV full time or for weeks consecutive at a time. $150 for a long weekend or a week or two tops is quite spendy.

I just need the service for when we are at our cabin. Unfortunately, you are unable to pause your service when on a residential plan. Just want to clarify when it is said the you can pause your service whenever you want.

    If Starlink were to sell the v4 for $300 here in Wisconsin for Roaming, I’d get it. It would be wonderful if they would reduce their charge below $150 per month. The deal isn’t available for me anyway so I’ll just wait til it is.

I do need to cut down some trees on the south side of the house to facilitate a more clear sky in that area but will start on that project and check the ability to get connectivity with the Starlink app I downloaded from their website. If that suffices, I will definitely purchase the system. A reduction in monthly fee would be the icing on the cake for me. My area is almost devoid of any other internet access options as I am in a near dead zone for cell coverage and the other satellite companies cannot provide decent speeds despite their over inflated ads suggesting otherwise. Starlink service has always been intriguing to me, but the upfront cost, and the fact - at least in the beginning - that you had to have a static location to mount your hardware is what kept me away from it.
    As it is now, I'm paying about 65 a month for service (which includes a 10 a month hardware fee - I don't own it), and I'm getting great speeds with damned near zero latency. So, while Starlink is intriguing, to me, those price points are still not enough to make me want to take the plunge.

    There are areas in the United States where service is either not available or there is a waitlist. For example, near Marysville, Washington, a block has switched from available to waitlist. I'd guess that the density of users has exceeded the capacity in that area. There is an area near Brewster, Washington, where no known service date is posted.
    The availability is dynamic. When an area reaches a capacity threshold, it flips to waitlist.
