Excellent guidelines clearly communicated and having the subtitles listing the paints the dry quickly and those that dry slowly really helped. Thank you so much. Best wishes Tim.
This was incredibly helpful. I am always so afraid of doing anything to dry it faster that will alter the work. These are some great ideas to naturally incorporate. Much appreciated.
I just watched a similar video and the tuber said to blow dry directly on the surface. Based on the rationale for possible cracking later on, I believe your method to be the best advice. Thank you!

I use only 8 colours of pebeo oil paint. I use Alizarin crimson,Cadmium primary Yellow, ultramarine blue, tittanium white, intense black,Silver, gold and my favoriete colour magenta. I love magenta. For thining out my oil paints i use linseed oil also from the brand pebeo. For cleaning my oil paint brushes i use safflower oil from amazone. I don,t like terpentine. It makes me dizzy and sick. Thank you for these helpfull oil paint tips👍🏾😁
Thanks Mandie, I have squeezed thick paint and applied straight from the tube. I reckon it’ll take months but my next exhibition is 20th of May, I’m hoping your hairdryer tip might help, but a I’ll certainly take it out of the sun and move it upstairs.
I would not dry an oil painting in a dark environment as oil paints needs oxygen AND light for oxidation reaction (curing), a dark box, while protecting from dust, would significantly slow down drying of many pigments, some conservation specialists say it can also lead to forming a weaker film layer. Soft indirect light is optimal for drying oil paintings
I do find that wood panel helps in curing oil paint faster and that some pigments are also curing faster than others. I really think that the support can help in curing the paint faster no matter what the pigment is important as well.
Ty, yes I did find the video very helpful! ??-wuestion-I know of an artist that lays shop towels over his painting to absorb excess oil-he doesn’t claim that this speeds up drying-what is your opinion-pros and cons please! Ty
So I just did my first oil painting and it’s pretty large. It came out nice but man is it wet. The paint is pretty thin and I used linseed oil as well as thinner. Can I put a space heater behind it for a few hours? I have a pretty busy day tomorrow and need it dried by the weekend (today is Tuesday).
i have a collection of winsor and newton griffin alkyd paint (classed as fast drying ) I want to go to conventional oils , were in the sceam of fat over lean could i use these up i presume they would be best thinned and used for blocking in , is that correct thanks ... love your videos
Using alkyd walnut oil, how many hours of open wet paint time can I get to work during a day in a normal comfortable heat and humidity controlled studio?
Thanks for the tips. Do you seal your wood panels before priming? I do this with an acrylic polymer and I would assume it impacts drying time so I'm curious if you do this step.
after watching ur video i noticed that the must ingredient is "patient"..how the artist b that patient when their idea to paint coming out but must keep it hold to wait layer by layer to dry that slow
I want to use Walmart Alkyd medium to speed up my drying time. Since each layer will be more dry than the next layer above it, can I use the same amount of Alkyd medium in each layer? Thanks for any help. I need to know asap so I can begin oil portraits.
What do you recommend to accelerate clarified poppy oil? I don’t think it has driers in it because the description of the product says it requires a drier. I’m trying not to use a siccative like a cobalt drier because it’s pretty unhealthy to handle or maybe they’re not as bad to use? Should I mix in a little bit of gamsol in my fat layer? What do you think? Thanks Mandie!
You can try mixing a small amount of Galkyd Light into it, but nothing too fat like Galkyd or Liquin as the two properties would be too vastly different that it can make the paint dry funny. What is your reason for using poppyseed oil? Poppyseed oil is optimal for light and bright colors as it prevents yellowing. So if you aren't painting in these colors you can try using a galkyd medium instead to speed up the drying time. I've never used colbalt drier but I heard it works really well! Just make sure your area is ventilated and you wear gloves. It's good that you're thinking about the health and safety of these products! I recommend using gamsol with your medium in your initial layers but not in the later stages as the painting can be more prone to cracking later on.
@@mandiekeay3095 I am all about experimenting! 😄 I want to see which mediums work for me as I am new to oil painting. I should've bought drying poppy oil that already has drying agents. Hopefully galkyd light doesn't tint the colors when I add it to the poppy oil I bought. I will try that! I subscribed to you because you really give valuable information. Thank you for your suggestions and advice!

Very useful tips. Thank you so much for the video. I'm gonna try them in miniature painting.
Very good video that explains the drying tips clearly. I will recommend this video to my students!

good video but i found that linseed oil makes the paints dry slower especially when it’s student grade (water mixable)
Good info, thank you.

I seal my wood panels with clear gesso or gel matte medium. They both dry transparent so I can still see the wood underneath :)
@@mandiekeay3095 which one dries faster? :) how long do you wait to paint until after priming?

Wht if we use the cold type of hairdrier so it doesnt crack the paint?
I haven't tried a cold hairdrier but heat generally helps oil paint dry faster
I need help i used oil paint to paint over a mask i didn't add anything to the paint and its taking for ever to dry if there is any cosplayers here i need help
I like to roast mine in the oven at about 120 degrees
My teacher taught us to put oil paintings in a low oven for awhile.
Can I only paint a portrait many layers with fast drying medium? Or there will be color / layer cracking?
You can do that, as long as you don't use a more lean medium in between or on top of layers with more fat medium
