From the 1970's - 2000 we were a family, kid town... It was wonderful raising children in Jerome. Even my grandchildren were raised in Jerome. The BEST families, kids, artists, theater programs, library, Jerome special events, was a era of loving creative, splendor..
Our Mayor is a women, born, and raised in Jerome. Her mother was a beloved public service, Grant write, and City council member. People from the early days, never squattered, huge misconception. Phelps Dodge, and UVX miing Co.'s, rented lands, sold lands, and leased properties. Working very hard to restore, and rebuild to historic codes. All the amazing rock wals in Jerome, was renovated by devoted rock wall engineers, from Jerome. Hours of vollenteer work was given to the Town by the labor of our Jeromee brothers. The Arts has always been the foundation of community. Some of the greatest musicians, Artisans, Jeweler's, Scuptors, painters, Potters, were the founding Mothers, & Fathers, of Jerome AZ.
Jerome is a different place for sure. Been going up there since the 80s....as a Phoenix resident. My Ex's great grand parents we founders of Cornville, the Miller's, the first post master of the Cornville post office. The miners from Jerome would come down their to get their mail. My Ex's Grandmother was a bit of a rockstar during Cornville's founders day parade. Sweet old Margaret got to ride in the lead Cadillac...lol. Jerome is one of those great day trips. I especially like it during summer. Beat the heat of the Valley, spend a few bucks in the shops. Love the mountain driving and yes.... Arizona is just amazingly beautiful. Especially the North Country. One of my favorite drives is... starting out in Flagstaff after spending the night at my Sisters. Take 89A down into Oak Creek Canyon and Sedona. Then, 89A into Cottonwood and then up into the Mingus Mountains and Jerome. Then, down into Prescott Valley and Prescott (for dinner). Then, take the "back way" through Yarnell into Wickenburg and then of course the 74 back to I17 and the Valley. Great summertime drive. Stay cooler and likely catch a storm or two during Monsoon season. July to late Sept. Bit of a Rollercoaster ride in Elevation. Dropping down then up and down and up again until Yarnell...then all down to the Valley. Amazing sites, good people...cool stores and stuff to browse....maybe buy. Good way to spend a weekend when its 110 degrees in the city....lol. Been in Arizona for 45 years and absolutely love it. Been to 44 states and can't imagine living anywhere but here. Its a magical place.
You missed the history. I had relatives who were born in Jerome, worked there (both in the mine and in town), and died there back in the day. Also there is or was a museum at the mine.
We moved to California in the 50's and our 49 plymouth station wagon pulling a homemade plywood cargo trailer couldn't pull itself up the mountain at Jerome so there was a man who pulled people up !! He got us up and over safely 😂😅 Thanks whoever you were towing man 😊❤
We drove through Jerome in 1973 while on a trip from Denver to LA. We stopped at a really nice cafe on the main drag, run by friends of the people I was riding with.. There were people living and working there in the early 70s. It wasn't quite the ghost town he described. I had considered moving back there at one time because I fell in love with the area.
The name of that mountain range is San Francisco peaks.. but the tallest mountain that he is referring to is called Humphreys Peak.. just a little more info about it 😁👍🏻
@@sergethepurge9425 I love your video this is the best knowledge of History I've ever heard about Jerome and I live in Prescott I go to Jerome at least twice a month.. I take the back way Perkinsville road to Williams is a beautiful drive but kind of bumpy
Is that road that goes right by the fire station instead of going around that curve just go right by the fire station and that's Perkinsville road that will take you all the way to Williams Arizona or bring you out in Chino all off-road
No one will get your humor. This is just OK I guess for the average no nothing tourist but, The tour guide guy or what ever he is supposed to be here should brush up a little on his knowledge and much more about the history and understanding of Jerome, now and then. Good for some I suppose.
You should check out Republic Washington, a neat little town in the mountains. Gold mine town, still has mining going on. Right around a thousand people. Absolutely beautiful countryside.
My grandparents took me to Jerome in their (fairly big) RV when I was around 10/11 years old. All I really remember is looking out of the window as we were going up this curving road and seeing a dead drop down a "cliff"... I saw ancient wrecks of some cars that had fallen off the road and thought to myself, "We're gonna die here." Props to my Grandpa for skillfully driving that behemoth up that perilous road. I wish I could remember more about our trip there, but that fear has stuck with me all these decades later. 😁
I doubt they just "fell off". Too many people don't know how to drive these kind of roads. Or they're inebriated. Glad you made it! One time I got rear-ended coming down the Hill because of huge amount of deer around in front of my car so I had to stop and the guy behind me didn't stop in time and hit me. Not intentionally.
Born and raised in AZ for almost 50 years. My mom took me to Jerome in the 80s. Even as a little kid, I was able to appreciate the magic of the town. It's one of my favorite places.
That was a really fun and interesting video. I live about an hour away and I’ve only been to Jerome once. I really want to visit again. Yes, my favorite thing about living in Arizona is the wide open skies! It’s breathtaking. We lived in western Washington for a short time and although gorgeous, claustrophobic is a good description. I prefer the Arizona sky and our sunsets are spectacular.
Oh how I miss the desert SW! You can see the whole horizon; not where I live now: KY. All I see now is buildings, more buildings and even more buildings! And if that isn't bad enough, the trees are *EVERYWHERE*!!!!
We live in Prescott Valley and go to Jerome ALOT...The Bordello is the best place for burgers and The Surgeon's House is the best place to stay!! The State park is very cool.
great town, resteraunts are always super crowded, good food, local candy store, parks, homes, its a great place to go out with the day, i remember going out with my uncle sitting down on a ledge and eating
Oatman Arizona....now there's s different place! On the old Route 66 up by Kingman. Another old mining town with its resident Burros. Yup...got stuck in a traffic jam there once....of a line of wild Burros that basically own the town. Even met Gus, and old Burro that liked to cook off in the back of the General store. Ever try and house train a wild Burro? They seemed to figure it out. Maybe not a flashy as Jerome...lol...but a different place for sure!
I live in Laughlin, NV (Southern NV) and Oatman is 40-45 minutes north of me. Oatman is pretty cool with the wild burros and the Wild West shootout shows.
We visited the town years ago. We met an amazing woodworker named Lonnie Anderson that had his shop up on the hill. His pieces were at a level way way beyond the kind of woodworking that you normally see. I think he made a piece for the Dali Llama. There probably isn't a better place to be inspired if you're an artist like him or any other artist. That is a must go to town if you're out west. Loved the video clip.
Great job Surge , sooo glad I stayed subscribed. You're an excellent musician, as well as an excellent " Tour Guide ". Been to Jerome in the past , but You're the first ( that I've seen ) to showcase it. Beautiful town , and you really did a great job with the interview. Thanks!!! 😊
We love Jerome. We’re fortunate enough to live over the mountain and Chino Valley would love to see more coverage of Prescott Cave Creek Williams Flagstaff so many places we haven’t explored as we plan
My neighbor grew up in Jerome, I believe in the 60's. He told us stories. They played in all the empty buildings and sledded on all the streets. The whole town was their playground. Sounded like a great childhood.
My great uncle Charlie worked at Jerome when they began the pit. One evening a shovel detonated a missed blast hole and pieces of the bucket rained down among the houses. They dove under the bed. The head frame from the Glove Mine came from Jerome. Nice video.
I love going to Jerome! I live about 25 miles from here. I love going up for wine and spirits. The locals are always friendly! I've been going to Jerome for 30+ years and it's always a good time!
We live about a 20 minute drive west of Jerome, so I really appreciated this video! I have to say though, I haven't actually noticed the number of visitors decreasing in the summer--seems to me whenever I've visited it's still just as hard to find a parking place --in town and not in the big parking lot north of town--in July as it is in the fall or winter. I think you could have included a few more interesting places, such as the store with the amazing kaleidoscopes. On the other hand, it was interesting to see some places I didn't know about, such as the Hot Pepper store, the new coffee place (or new to me, anyway) and that consignment store in the old High School. Great job!
I was there in the 70s and it was still a ghost town. Like he said Hippies around. But everything else was rocks lizards snakes and Lots of wind. Took some great marketing to sell that town.
Jerome is a beautiful place! With the town sliding down the mountain 3/4" per year, it won't belong before some of the water, sewer and gas mains start breaking.
My Grandfather was a copper miner when he came back after WWll, My father George Varela was there and two of his siblings l. The copper mines shut down and the town turned to a ghost town. A resurgence came late 60's and early 70's hippies and artists came and brought it back to life .
Great video! I spent a week in Jerome about 20 years ago and absolutely loved it there! I met residents that were from Ohio where I live and found the town welcoming, friendly and picturesque in an offbeat way that appealed to me. The only negative would have been that narrow, winding access road. Jerome is a more serene Bisbee and between the two I preferred Jerome. I still wear my Haunted Hamburger shirt. Rock on, Jerome!
My husband and I actually have been there on a trip to Arizona. Remember driving up a mountain and stopping half way up to take a pic of that great view!
I live in Cottonwood, just below Jerome. Grew up nearby in Prescott, and actually had a choir competition in Jerome at the high school in 1972, just before it closed. Love to take friends to Jerome for sightseeing, but don't want to live there, I like to garden and there's just not room. Plus it's pretty haunted at night.
Great descriptions: "A ghost town with a million people," "Has nothing you need and everything you want." Jerome is always a memorable place to visit, the drive in from the south, in Fall, is full of gorgeous color, and when you arrive hungry the food is great. A fine place to walk around and be nowhere.
From NH and I get the east feeling, Moved to Phoenix area this year and Jerome is first place I bring everyone to visit! Thanks for answering lots of questions I’ve had!! Great video! Great town!
also from NH and moved to tucson a while back, been up to jerome a few times and also feel like its has a very east coast vibe, the nothing to do adds a little to that. I like the area but I wouldnt want to spend more than a day hanging out, cant even get a pack of cigarettes without driving back down the hill....
Great Video!!! ( Note : a Best Seller Book was written about Vortexes over and around Sedona, Arizona ; and Sedona went from an unincorporated village to overnight 'The New Age Capital'. This overcrowding spilled over towards mostly Ghost Mining Town, Jerome, Arizona, and many buildings were restored for the Tourist Trade. ( Love the views from Jerome!)
Visited there mid 60s, was bout 6or 7 yrs old, was the scar road i was ever on to this day, dirt road that wound around the mountain, sheer drop with one mistake
I love Jerome! I haven’t been since 2017, I went to AZ 2 months ago and was upset I didn’t get to visit Jerome again. It’s awesome and I love the vibes it gives off. I hope it doesn’t change too much in the next decade or so.
I love Jerome. I live just down the hill and I was born and raised in the area. My brothers and sisters I got to go to high school up there and the year I started they built a school in Cottonwood so I missed out on that experience. I'm a child of the sixties. I've always thought that Jerome was the coolest Town ever. I drive up there every now and then. It's not far but I'm reclusive. I can see it every night from my window.
My grandma Dorrie was born in Jerome and her dad taught school back then. I like to visit there. Her house was the third one as you first drive through . I also love the fudge shop and a dinner. She was born in 1920s.
I love Jerome. I am true Arizonan, born and raised. One of my uncles warned me against buying and moving there because it is indeed sliding down the hill. It is such a cool place to visit! I love the way it is on the side of a hill. Charming little place. 😍
Interestingly, civilization prefers flat land for metro cities but the coolest and the most interesting parts to live in are often the not-so-flat parts in Arizona.
The one and only time I visited, Jerome was in the early 70s when it was a true ghost town with some people living there in the buildings. Back then it was considered an art colony, very sparsely populated. I was visiting a friend and her boyfriend working a mountain Ranch near Cottonwood. She and I went up one day to explore the town which she was familiar with. We ended up in the saloon playing poker, just the two of us while drinking beers most of the day. The barkeep was kind enough to allow us to play poker, although we weren’t playing for money, but eventually stated that it was against the law to play poker. I remember going into the art co-op, which was very nice at that time and I bought a mask, believe it or not, from Bali. So not an Arizona souvenir but I had to have it! I will not forget Jerome at all. So glad I was there before, the rest of the world discovered it. Very fond memories ❣️
Been to Jerome! Residents were warm and gracious. Food in small restaurant we ate in food was awesome and venue was chic as well as fun. Recommending a stop there town is so interesting!
I'm hearing rattlesnake as you guys pass by the trees and bushes 😂😂😂😂😂,I remember Jerome from the 80's and it was still small houses on the side of the mountains and the main street with the hotel (haunted)😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
Love Jerome, it's a great day trip especially when you couple it with Sedona. I was actually wondering the other day if families with kids actually live there and how does that even work. I personally could never live there but I'm glad the locals love it so I can keep visiting and supporting Jerome.
There are just a few kids there I think, and they attend school in Clarkdale. My grandkids go to Clarkdale elementary, which includes Jerome and the Yavapai reservation as well. It makes a nice blend of kids!
Jerome is my favorite town in Arizona. I have photos I have taken of the buildings since the 70’s. A famous artist in Jerome, John T Fitzgerald, did charcoal drawings of the town in the 60’s and 70’s. I have one of his works, “At The Foot Of Mingus”
We would drive up to Jerome in early 90's to eat out and play pool and dance alot of fun back then The museum there shows everything there above and below ground❤
Use to drive thru jerome with my parents in the 60s and 70s with my parents to visit family in amarillo. Abandoned buildings everywhere. The sliding jail is so interesting.
Jerome was fun to visit. Spicy jelly was great. Only thing is the hours of businesses. Nothing is really open after 4PM. One important point is that there is everything you could need within 30 minutes of driving at the bottom of the hill.
Grew up in cottonwood, my dad used to take me on his Harley up to Jerome all the time. Just got to visit again last week and it still felt like the same place which is a rare thing nowadays.
I grew up in Prescott Arizona. We went to Jerome sometimes when we would have to drive all the way to Cottonwood just to shop at Walmart 😂 it was an adventure every time we went😊
Jerome is not a no fly zone. It’s called an Agency Area and is federally protected most likely due to wildlife breading. It’s a 2000’ restriction but you can fly over it, around it, next to it.
I loved watching this! I live nearby here in Sedona. I love going up to Jerome for the day now and then. Glad i found your vids! I subscribed to your channel.
One of my favorites places in Az. I have stayed in the Riordan house,Kelly house & historic Conner Hotel... Love local wines represented at Vino Zona! Shout out to The Sassy red head aka Ginger.

I worked for Maynard. Thank god he stepped back and got managers, cause he’s an asshole.
Likewise, the High School did not close for lack of students and there are more than 7 kids in town. I hope he did not pay his "tour guide".
There’s so much more to Jerome than what was mentioned on this tour. You have to go visit the town to see for yourself.

I’ve been there. I found it beautiful. I can still feel the energy there when I think about Jerome.
I hiked around there in the early 70's I was amazed that you could walk into and old cabin and the kitchen utensils were still there.

Thank you so much! Jerome is a very cool town forsure, thank you for your comment!
That's funny I ate it the haunted hamburger too it was wonderful Jerome is a beautiful place
Right on, I'm a Buckeye too. I've been living & working here in AZ for 5 yrs.now.❤
My husband and I actually have been there on a trip to Arizona. Remember driving up a mountain and stopping half way up to take a pic of that great view!
I was there maybe early 90's. Alot of young artists, friendly and cool buildings, i bought a old copper pot at a store there
Definitely! Thank you for watching!
Thank you for the video. I learned a lot watching, very informative. The first time I walked through the area I was reminded of a lot of Sausalito.
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it. There will be a lot more to come!
Very cool thanks for sharing!
ghosts? why?
I love Jerome, we go every time we wanna have a fun day. The haunted burger is a must try if you’re visiting.
We just had an amazing time in Jerome!! Stayed at the grand hotel!! Great little town with amazing burgers at haunted burgers
Great town!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
also from NH and moved to tucson a while back, been up to jerome a few times and also feel like its has a very east coast vibe, the nothing to do adds a little to that.
I'm Canadian and have 4 States left to explore of which one is Arizona. I will definitely visit Jerome. Enjoyed your video.
Thank you so much! That means a lot!
Visited there mid 60s, was bout 6or 7 yrs old, was the scar road i was ever on to this day, dirt road that wound around the mountain, sheer drop with one mistake
I worked in hotel/restaurant up there in 2019 when living in Cottonwood. It was so cool and weird - just barely holding together.
That old school could be turned into a really nice shelter for recuperating veterans coming home from war????
Because every vet wants to be hours from civilization when they return from deployment...stop being naive
It’s not zoned for residential living. Also the mine owns it. It’s not community property.
The school is rented out for art studios
There is a VA Hospital just over the mountain in Prescott. Which also has gas stations and grocery stores, doctors, etc...
That open pit and some of the scenery looks similar to Lead, South Dakota
I love Jerome! I haven’t been since 2017, I went to AZ 2 months ago and was upset I didn’t get to visit Jerome again. It’s awesome and I love the vibes it gives off. I hope it doesn’t change too much in the next decade or so.
Jerome is such a unique place. Very quaint while still cool. It's one of my favorite towns! ❤
Twice as hot as pepper spray lol..what could go wrong? 🤣
Great tour of Jerome! Drove through in the 90s! Loved it.
Thanks. I like your attitude- open and curious!
My grandma Dorrie was born in Jerome and her dad taught school back then. I like to visit there. Her house was the third one as you first drive through . I also love the fudge shop and a dinner. She was born in 1920s.
What's her last name? She probably knew my grandparents.
I love Jerome. I am true Arizonan, born and raised. One of my uncles warned me against buying and moving there because it is indeed sliding down the hill. It is such a cool place to visit! I love the way it is on the side of a hill. Charming little place. 😍
I saw a program on pbs concerning the housing in Brazil. Their house are started from the top of the mountain and built descending.
We ended up in the saloon playing poker, just the two
of us while drinking beers most of the day.
We love going up to Jerome and going to the bars and the haunted hamburger as well!!! Great views from their patio
Been to Jerome! Residents were warm and gracious. Food in small restaurant we ate in food was awesome and venue was chic as well as fun. Recommending a stop there town is so interesting!
Both of my grandparents were born and raised in Jerome until the 1940s. Then both families left for Los Angeles, because of the war.
Grew up hanging in Jerome, know that place very very well, Magic festers for sure
I'm hearing rattlesnake as you guys pass by the trees and bushes 😂😂😂😂😂,I remember Jerome from the 80's and it was still small houses on the side of the mountains and the main street with the hotel (haunted)😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤
I think you meant rattlesnake cicadas 😄
Cicadas.
Love Jerome, it's a great day trip especially when you couple it with Sedona. I was actually wondering the other day if families with kids actually live there and how does that even work. I personally could never live there but I'm glad the locals love it so I can keep visiting and supporting Jerome.
Definitely! Thank you so much for watching
There are just a few kids there I think, and they attend school in Clarkdale. My grandkids go to Clarkdale elementary, which includes Jerome and the Yavapai reservation as well. It makes a nice blend of kids!
@@elainefarr3155 interesting! Thank you for sharing
Been there many times . I love that little town. A lot of history in that town.
Definitely! Thanks for watching!
Come to Wickenburg, Arizona you'll love it.
Thank you I will look into it!
We would drive up to Jerome in early 90's to eat out and play pool and dance alot of fun back then
The museum there shows everything there above and below ground❤
Hey... I know this town very well... Great interview!
Been coming there on and off since the early 80's. Its definitely changing.
Definitely
Beside going up hill, it beautiful little town, looks peaceful. 😊
The mining museum (old mansion) is the coolest place. It has a HUGE fireplace. You can stand on glass over a mineshaft, so terrifying.
Yes we saw that! I just had so much footage it didn’t make it into the video! Maybe next time I go there I’ll get that again! Thanks for watching!
It's a beautiful ride from Mesa on our motorcycle.
My uncle did the same in the 70s-drove up from the metropolis of Salome 😄
Beautiful scenic road trips throughout the mountains of AZ
A nice tour of my favorite town. Sadly, you guys skipped the Spirit Room.
I live in Phoenix and go up to Jerome quite often. Love it up there
I used to live there from 95-02. Very cool town. I know every cool spot in that town. Places only locals know. Cool episode 🤙
Xlnt video! I live in Prescott Valley, 19 miles from Jerome, and your video shared facts I had no idea about. Bravo.
Thank you so much! That means a lot! There will be a lot more to come!
I moved to Prescott valley in 1995 then moved to Chino valley. In 2016 , made plenty of trips to Jerome and sadona, cottonwood.
You had no idea, because all lot of it is inaccurate. If you like misinformation, I guess it would be xlnt.
I'm a native of Arizona and I have driven through Jerome numerous times whenever I took the scenic route from Phoenix to Flagstaff on highway 89A.
Jerome is not a no fly zone. It’s called an Agency Area and is federally protected most likely due to wildlife breading. It’s a 2000’ restriction but you can fly over it, around it, next to it.
Great video and great tour guide!
Thank you!
Oh! I love Jeroma! We lived there when I was little,..in the 60;s.
I loved watching this! I live nearby here in Sedona. I love going up to Jerome for the day now and then. Glad i found your vids! I subscribed to your channel.
Thank you I really appreciate that! 😄
@@sergethepurge9425 im still watching other vids from your channel right now 😀 I like the AZ Desert ones 🌵☀️ ✌🏼
One of my favorites places in Az. I have stayed in the Riordan house,Kelly house & historic Conner Hotel... Love local wines represented at Vino Zona! Shout out to The Sassy red head aka Ginger.
