- Just outside of Death Valley National Park is a lost desert town with people who've decided to live away from it all. Join me as we journey into this special place where the locals say they live in absolute freedom, without cops, crime, or any of the hassles (and few conveniences) of the modern world... a strong community isolated from the rest of American society.

Thanks for joining in today guys! I just want to give credit where credit's due. It might look like it's just me making these videos but my wife Natalia is a huge component to making these weekly videos possible. She was up until 6:00am this morning finishing up on the edit so we could post at our usual Sunday time of 11:00am EST. She puts her heart and soul into these video teasers and final touches to make sure you get the best video we can offer. If you're liking these videos please give Natalia a big shout-out!
all the while i watched this video i was thinking of the hard work she does (as editor?). you're lucky, peter.
Isn't such a blessing to have a great woman / partner by your side!
Good 👍 Job Natalia
Thanks for the great video and your hard behind the scenes work, Natalia!
Thanks Natalia for all your hard work!!
Your "off the grid" videos are really my preferred ones. I like your way of meeting people, talking to them without judging. Much more interesting than any mainstream documentary, great job
100% correct imo.
THese people are bizarre. IF you cant function in society then why? I guess that's how things gotta be sometimes.
@@breadfan9 It's more of a question why society has failed them. If you come to the desert and meet some of these folks, you will 100% get it. Tired of playing the game. It's not for everyone, but worth it for the space and views and space alone...🌵🤠
My dream life!!!! My friends think I am crazy to want to live isolated in the desert. The desert sounds are healing.
The wind is as miserable as the heat.
You're going to spend More money to live isolated. All necessities cost more. you may save money on housing.
Aside from that you might love it.
Winters with little wind aren't any big deal.
Its quiet and you can see.for miles.
I would love to live there. No one to bother me. Just the peace and quiet I love!❤
My dream as well! Complete isolation!
There's a reason why they call it death valley. the summer AVERAGE is over 100. No thank you
Over 100 is NOTHING. Haha It’s that way all summer in areas like Ridgecrest CA, Boron CA, & Bakersfield. Death Valley gets up over 111 all the time in the summer. It got up all the way to 134 F.
These remote, desert towns are my favourite videos to watch. The openness, the friendly people, and freedom.
I love how calm, well spoken and none judgemental Peter is in his videos. A humble dude making fascinating videos doesn't go unnoticed. His questions are focused, insightful but always respectful. Awesome.
Very well said!
I like silly memes!
Nice people. Enjoyed this video. Who owned the carp in the spring out in no where?

"We have had only one fight in thirty years!"
Peter "but you've been divorced twice"
😂😂😂 that was a savage comment
They really forgot they were divorced twice lol
I hope this place never goes away, it's a very rare thing to find a place that is as free as this town. I've lived in Maine for over 20 years and have never seen a town that is not embroiled in politics one way or another. To know that a free town still exists in our United States is a relief to this tired soul.
They are not free. They are California Liberals and they don't tolerate ANYONE who is not a socialist Liberal.
Slab city 😮
Maine. Wells, Sanford, Biddeford, Portland, (Nova Scotia CA), North Berwick, Kennebunkport, Kennebunkport, Eliot, great place(s).
Grew up in New England (Boston), family in Wells/North Berwick. Now in Pasadena CA. Miss the Atlantic.
🕊️😎
Yeah but they still need society to eat, and it looks like they all have their properties in a city ...
Not judging but they are not that free.
Still it's a nice place 🙂
Agree❤
Outstanding. Being a Californian, motorcyclist and something of a desert rat, I’ve visited the town several times over the years. I’ve entered up over “the falls” route as well as from the highway. Its a fascinating place to be sure. You managed to find some of the most interesting folks to talk with, as you always do. Well done.
Very interesting. I happen to live at the mine that was spoken of 4 days a week.
What was not mentioned is the lack of light pollution out here.
It's a star gazers paradise.
I was stationed just South of there at Ft Irwin and in 1997 out in the field there I had a front row seat to the two comets (Hale-Bopp and Hyakutake) that were visible in the night sky for months with the naked eye. I saw them even better when I viewed them through my night vision goggles.
The lack of light pollution in much of the Mojave Desert is inargueable.
I could add that the desert is a photographer's paradise; photographers are thick on the ground out here.
I think I know where this is (but my lips are sealed) and I would like to come out and sop up some local color (but NOT like Lucy and her grape-stomping fiasco)
@@joewenzel5142 we camped out there and what a show it was to watch the jets training they would zip through them canyons and they would be level to us on a hillside
@@davidroyer5049 Yeah you could say it's really about "Survival of the Fittest" out there. 😂
You know it's a good day when Peter drops a video!
Yes
I'm interested! If you don't mind please email me at: contact@petersantenello.com
I want to do more of these alternative living types of videos. I live in Florida so I'm sure it's not too far.

Thanks Chris!
Hey Peter can you do a video in Chicago soon?
When people around me tries to describe Americans based their narrow minded view when reading about world politics I often bring up these kind of warm, wholesome and free-minded people that I usually bump into when traveling around in these wonderful parts of the states such as Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah. I meet them outside gas stations, at motels, in roadhouse restaurants etc. etc. The American people is sure as hell not the government. This is along with the nature and scenery one of the reasons why I love the US and take the early road-trips around in the area, not for the shopping malls, the amusement parks or any of the plastic surreal parts of the country which usually is what people from Europe refer to when describing their trips to the US! When people say that they love the Italians or the French mentality they’ve never been around to meet the authentic Americans /Love from Sweden 🇸🇪
Sweden 🇸🇪 has my heart! I’ve only traveled out of the states to two locals , Peru and Sweden x2. There is something about Sweden that feels like home to me. I think I belong there😂. I felt like the people were fairly “ closed off” but yet helpful and friendly when needed?. I feel like when you actually do befriend someone there and gain their trust, you have a friend for life. I made a hand full of lifelong friends while visiting the Bushcraft Festavelan even if we only keep in touch via social. I attended the festival twice (should have been an annual visit) but then the world fell apart and I don’t think I’ll ever get to go back. That breaks my heart. I visited Stockholm and Uppsala and some surrounding countryside. I loved the slower pace of life and the way people seemed fully engaged in what ever they were doing , especially when conversing with someone. It’s been a few years but I don’t remember seeing everyone’s heads buried in thier cell phones.
I think this is one of my favorite videos! Max and the twice married twice divorced couple are terrific people! “I’m a Maserati stuck in neutral”
It’s so mind boggling that, in all of these series you do, the people are so different, yet it’s all in the same country. 🇺🇸
It's a pretty massive country though
Yeah you got to get out more bro lol and when you get out don't be afraid to speak to people.
The US is soooo diverse in so many ways.
Everyone lives here. Anyone one person that you can think of of any race, gender, ethinicity, etc....they're here. Somewhere. Hell, I met someone from Greenland that lives in Oregon. No shit.
We live in a big country.
Please do more of these remote US towns, I love them!
@A S ARAKNAS
Go out and explore them yourself
So cool.. JEsus is king
There has been other RUclips videos of this town. I won’t mention it out of respect but it’s no secret. It’s a pretty cool place and I plan to go there in a couple months when start my camping trip. Loved your video, well done!
The oasis with the fish seemed unreal... that was amazing... wonder if they put those fish in there and bred them
My exact thoughts. The cooler was a give way but it’s so random in the middle of nowhere feels staged
This lovely village looks exactly like Siwa oasis here in Egypt 🇪🇬.
Most of its residents has run away from the crowded cities and the disorders and the huge range of inconvenience.
Thank you very much for this impressive video.
Salute from Egypt 🇪🇬 with love and respect 😊
Thank you for sharing with us Mustafa, come visit the states. I would love to visit your country.
JEsus is the savior not Obama God bless. JEsus is king
the way he said being born to perfect loving parents was the Pompeii of his life was touching. anyone who has had a shitty childhood and/or life due to their parents know what it is to be robbed the most precious importance of life
Welcome to THAT club. After years of wrangling, I’ve managed to dump the burden if victimhood and have a very blessed life. Part of the process was to figure out that though I learned to live with F*ck heads as a child I didn’t have to continue that into my adulthood. Maybe that was the lesson the whole time.
Thx Peter and Natalia for all the hard work. From a great grandmother in Phoenix Arizona, I love going on all your adventures with you.
May God bless you Becky
Keep on going AZ Becky 👍🥩🥃
Wholesome ♡
Natalia thank you for your hard work & dedication!! It is appreciated.
Thank you Natalia and Peter for always showing respect to the people and the environment in your videos. Also thank you for taking us down the road less traveled, showing us places we never knew existed!!
If there’s one thing I LOVE about Peter in all of his videos is how he shows respect and unbiased views to the people he meets and interviews , so much so that You can’t tell whether he agrees or disagrees or likes or dislikes something. That’s growth on a different level , and I have learned something from you. Keep up the great work!
The US has amazing and very scenic landscapes. Really beautiful.

THANK YOU NATALIA FOR YOU HELPING ON THESE GREAT VIDEOS.
My grandfather ran the Morningstar mine in the Mojave preserve when I was a kid and took me through this Ghost town of people once. I was amazed how people could live in such ungodly forgiving wasteland. But then again alot the miners lived in sheet metal shacks so these people are definitely living better then original settlers
We loved visiting Calico Ghost town growing up and took my kids there a couple years ago.
Thank you Peter for taking the risks of filming. Thank you Natalia for your hard and good work. Many blessings to you both.
Well done. Dawn and Chris are so genuine. Great job with the probing questions.
Everything about this town and its setting speaks to the peace-loving soul.
Thank you Peter and Natalia, for sharing this. Loved it! Lawrence🚂
Another fantastic video. Thanks for all of the adventures. Really nice to see all of the totally different lives that are lived in this beautiful country of ours. Thanks 👍
Pete, thank you for sharing this town with us. Looks like a pretty peaceful place.
This was fascinating. These people have a better sense of community that I do in my suburban home. Such fascinating people. Thank you for this.
What I really love about watching your documentaries is that I get to listen to interesting people with interesting lives and be presented with ideas that make me think outside the box. I love it!
Hi Peter, I recently started to watch your video's. It makes me want to go to the secluded places in the mid-west, the drought, the dust. I want to say that I also really like the respectfull approach you have to the local communities. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
Enjoyed this as I've lived remote offgrid. For practical reasons moved to small town. When you have sense of community, purpose, belonging you have everything. I struggle with that balance every day. Want to move... unsure where. These folks seem so thankful and content. I admire that.
It makes my day just that little better seeing you upload a video
Thanks for showing us the world, Peter! Much love from The Netherlands

Beautiful. And your last statement is correct. Have a wonderful day! 🙂 (Thx Natalia!)

So many wonderful unique souls I would never have the pleasure of knowing without your videos. Thank you.
Thanks Peter and Natalia!
Just wanted to send love and positive vibes out to Max. What a good dude. Thanks for the tour.
Enjoyed this very much!
Thanks for a window into another unique place in our world!
Absolutely Awesome Video Peter
I love your summary at the end. So true.
That was awesome! Thanks for taking us on that journey!
Such a cool place! Seems like some great locals too. Thanks for sharing Peter, and thanks to Natalia for the great job editing these videos!! 😁
I really enjoyed this video. 😃
Once again thank you for a great story.
America is truly a beautiful country. We have such varied landscapes from deserts to mountains. Thank you for bringing so many varieties of people to us as well. Love your channel. Great vid
Thank you, Natalia for the beautiful editing. I appreciate you both so much. This country is so critically divided, I believe you are bringing communities together. Channels like this help bring about changes in perspectives towards other people, I know I have learned a lot watching you since the start of the pandemic. Thank you. 🥰
I love this kind of videos, it feels 'ike travelling. Definitely very educational. Thank you. Kind regards from Belgium.
Funny, I was born in Keeler and my parents soon moved Bishop, one of the town's people shopping places. We left California in the middle 50s and now I live in Arizona. I am certainly fascinated with the old mining towns. I love watch the Cerro Gordo video near that area also. It amazes me that people live in the hottest place in America. Another great video, Peter.
I was wondering if Ghost Town Living would be mentioned 😊
This video was just absolutely incredible and I would love to see so many more like this .
This is the most curious, bizarre, awesome place I’ve seen yet. Love the videos!
THANK YOU NATALIA ❤️ I enjoy all of PETERS videos..
This was fantastic... Thanks for posting.
Natalia & Pete thank you! Always great videos you guys are throwing up for us. A much needed break from the bs to see the other sides of life.
Great Content Peter. You show stories the media fails to cover.
vice did this town a few years back.. no secret.. the town even used to market and sell tours LOL
Thank you Peter & Natalia! I recently discovered your videos and have been binge-watching them. It's fascinating to see how people live!
Love watching these
Another glimpse into an American culture I knew nothing about.
Thanks for your remarkable videos, Peter.
Wonderful video, Peter. Please thank your wife, Natalia for her terrific work. It is greatly appreciated.
We live in a big city that has had a spike in crime for a number of years. The pandemic only made things worse. We live among many but still feel very isolated; afraid to go out after dark and being suspicious and wary when we do venture out. I don't think I have the strength or resourcefulness of these folks but a large part of me really envies them. Thanks again.
Peter!! we have the same birthday!!! Wow i love this, ive been diving into your videos for the past few months and i just sit in awe of what youve been able to accomplish. and to be able to show the world the true culture
I spent 3 weeks traveling the country last August. My wife and I were trying to hit as many mountain biking destinations as possible. It made me realize I'm definitely about this life. We're not able to do it full time right now because of our jobs, but we're planning another 3 week trip, and I think we might buy the RV this time instead of renting.
I always love waking up to one of your videos and watching it before I go about my day. The positivity within them just sets my mood to that for the rest of the day. Keep up the great work!
Peter you are incredibly brave for going to deatg valley desert alone. Yes that place does look stunning. Love your videos and stay safe man!
love these JOURNEYS!!THANK You
That was such a cool visit. Great folks doing their thing in their town. Peaceful.
What a fabulous video. I'd love to see more like this. Their life is so hard to relate to, but it's fascinating.
The sculptures are gorgeous! What a peaceful place.
I really enjoy your videos. You have a mellow vibe and a natural curiosity about the world around you. A big thanks to Natalia for her "behind the scenes" work!
Thank you Natalie, I sure enjoy you and Peter's videos John in Cincinnati
I've enjoyed passing through this ecclectic old town many times on my adventure bike, and my favorite way in is the way you went. It's very kitchy and unusual. Thanks for sharing!
I love that place! I remember watching Rose paint the front of the dance hall years ago. She was so nice, as well as the only one around. The waterfall was beautiful, and the cemetery was so interesting. Thanks for sharing this!
I've been to the waterfall once, in 2014. The trail to it got wiped out by the August 2022 Flash Flood, so it's not accessible at the moment, but I assume the Park Service will repair the trail and open it up again at some point in the next few months. I've never visited the town, but it's on my bucket list. There are several little towns in Nevada along US-95 that are similar, like Goldfield, Mina and Luning. No services other than electric power. No gas station or grocery store closer than 50 miles away, yet a few dozen people hang on in these places. Must take a very special breed to live in such remote places.
Excellent job Budd !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic video, thank you for posting! I learned so much
I loved this episode. Such fascinating people...as are with most of the people in your videos. Love this channel
you're always bringing us such consistently great and special content, and yet among the sea of awesome videos, this one sticks out to me for some reason. i've had the good fortune of visiting the southwest states only a handful of times, but each time was left more and more attracted to the area, wishing i could call it home. there's a sense of freedom in the air that's almost palpable. also, this feeling of something great, bigger than you, just around the corner. this segment really did a great job capturing the essence of this awesome little town, as well as conveying a bit of that inimitable southwest charm. the people there are very special- i'd give anything to be surrounded by similar folk where i live, but i'm about as removed from that as one can be. most similar place i've been, albeit not nearly as remote/secluded, was chloride, az- similar vibe with maybe even less people. gosh, i love the southwest united states so much- no other place like it. even a seemingly run down almost abandoned town like this just has such a strong, profound, character that leaves you wanting to relocate for good, just as some of the folks in the vid. you either click and get it or you don't.
Pete & Natalia, your videos are so entertaining, the way you communicate with people is your gift, keep up the great work..
Just a great video. Thanks👍👍👍
Amazing Peter. You know what would be really interesting as well. For you to bring someone from one of the other episodes you have done along for their reaction as well…maybe.
Love these old hippies, great artists. Never bored. I figured out the town, but will respect your and their wishes to keep it quiet. Informative video.
Utterly love your series

Thanks for this Peter . I love these areas . I have been going to Death Valley nearly every spring for the last 20 years.
I have to say - you're never predictable in your choices of topics for videos! Always informative, always a look at people living different lives and lifestyles, but ultimately showing we're all really not that different despite the way we live. Keep up the fabulous work Peter!
Thank you Natalia, awesome work!
Fascinating! Thanks, Peter
You really do make some high quality videos Peter -- good job. Better entertainment than anything found on mainstream tv. PS: congrats for 1m subscribers
Travelling all over the US for work ( long-hauler ) , the coolest people I've learned the most from have always lived out in the middle of nowhere. If you make the journey to meet people like these folks and experience these types of places I've noticed over the years life will reward you with something you didn't know you needed but afterwards realize you were searching for all along and changing you in a way that will make you look back fondly and look forward seeking more.
Great video Peter !
Maybe that's why we have always stayed in the upper mid-west.
Love, love, love this video. I have been going through the Mojave desert since I was a child, and it has always been very alluring to me. There is something magical about the Mojave.
for sure. also mojitos. they are magical too.
🤣😂😂@@fourshore502
The desert is beautiful and I love to drive through it, but I do not want to live in it like these people do. Its hot enough in Phoenix and there are way too many snakes and scorpions here...I can't imagine what they are like there. I love small town, rural living, but in greener places.
Old saying goes: never meet your idols . Or something like that. Another words, don’t ruin your childhood.
The Mojave sucks
Great video! Thanks!
