My Dad retired from a police dept. in the east and moved to Vegas in 1976. He got a job as an investigator with the DA's office.

He died at 92 years old, but his heart belonged to the Vegas of the past.
My dad worked at the DAs office during that time frame too as an Arson investigator. Passed away back in 2017
I bet he had some pretty interesting stories.

The idea that the Mob just gave up controlling Vegas, their main money-laundering hub in the world, defies logic. They placed so many people into key positions of government and simply evolved up into quasi-legitimacy. That was done quite thoroughly during Prohibition already in the 1920s.

Thank you Peter for talking with Oscar Goodman. No matter how people see him and his wife, they played monumental roles in changing Las Vegas...unfortunately people like them are not in place now to stop the corrupt invasion of corporations taking over the Strip. ( Yes, Carolyn is still the mayor of Las Vegas, but most of the strip is in the county) I was born here in 1955. I've seen this town change like you couldn't imagine. The man Oscar represented in Texas was dating the sister of my bestfriend, she was a cocktail waitress at Ceasar's. My bestfriend and I had no clue about his life, we only knew he would send us to some of the finest places in the city...and we loved that. Oscar has always dreamed big when it came to this town and thankfully many of his dreams came true. But he has had his share of pain. Just a few years ago, I was out early in the morning walking my dog when I saw police all around a bathroom in the park. I found out later that his son was murdered in that bathroom. It made my heart sink. This town had it's share of problems but for what it's worth, I wouldn't change any part of my life here. I was involved with so many things, that at the time seemed normal but looking back, I realize that we were all growing and changing not only ourselves but the city. In the future people like Oscar will be missed because folks have lost that fighting spirit for the sake of us all. Thank you again.
Seems the corporations, some foreign, started taking over the Strip in the 80's when i was living there. They do not have the Vegas style sense of before, the hotels i saw recently seem soul less and cheap. The old Vegas had it's problems but there was a sense of community too. Not sure how it is now.
@@janedoe1146 It's a dump now.
As far as I can tell his son wasn't murdered. From the news reports I found, his son was attacked but actually survived.

I'm born '87 & raised in Vegas. I had the honor of having Mr. Goodman as my mayor most of my life, and now his loving wife. I absolutely love what they've done for our city throughout the years! ❤
My Grandpa moved our family here in '55 to take over the 1st tv & appliance store. He rubbed shoulders with Oscar, polictians & the mobsters also. I loved hearing all of my grandparents' old vegas stories. I'm so proud of my city! Thank you for taking a deep dive into our vegas history 🤗
You always manage to draw out the essence of these larger-than-life characters, without fanfare and sensationalism. Well done!
Mayor Goodman! I personally met him at a convention. He stopped & took the time to chat with me. He made my day! A fighter for the United States Constitution.

I've been living in Las Vegas since the late 90s. Former Mayor Goodman is treasure for us locals. Glad he's doing well for his age. Thanks for this interview.
What a treasure indeed. Delightful to have a Mayor who dedicated his career to defending serial murderers. Can't think of anything more heartwarming than knowing the city was represented by someone willing to embrace the darkest side of humanity, all in the pursuit of financial gain.

He worked terribly hard for his clients. I wish I had him a few years ago to represent me.
Mr Goodman is a gem, idc what anyone says. His stories really paint a picture of how things were back then and it’s incredibly interesting
What a great episode Peter! My husband and I lived in Vegas in 1984 for 6 months. It was the tail end of the old Vegas, still in a somewhat depressed period after the MGM fire. Sammy, Frank and the gang were still performing there and we, as New Yorkers, felt like we were in a foreign country. The wild Wild West in many respects. Our landlord, a physicist, would come around to this very strange area we lived in, South Las Vegas, near the Hacienda, and go around to his properties, door to door with a gun in his pocket, collecting rent.
What a fascinating well spoken man Oscar Goodman is. Could listen to him forever. Your instincts for who to speak to and spend time with could not be more astute. And your humanitarian big heartedness makes it a joy to spend time with you in these videos. Big fan
He (Oscar) said a huge truth…”the FBI stunk then the FBI stinks now”. 👍
Oscar said a lot of truths. I loved listening to him.
This is one of the best interviews I have ever seen of Oscar and in years to come it will be very valuable as he is now in his sunset years. There won't be to many more opportunities to get that kind of in depth frank discussions with him.
What a fantastic interview! Oscar Goodman is amazing; intelligent, articulate, funny. He’s 13 years older than I am with a better memory and sense of humor. Thank you Peter!
Kudos to Oscar, for showing us all how to age gracefully while championing the cause of serial murderers who have left a trail of devastation in their wake.
Peter has a very great interviewing style. He lets people talk as long they want without interrupting them. And at the same time he’s actually listening to what they have to say. Learn from it kids, he’s a master at his craft.

Let's thank Oscar for reminding us of the nostalgia and warmth that comes from embracing the darker side of humanity. Oscar Goodman, America's greatest defender of serial murderers: indeed a local treasure.
Peter-this has been my favorite of all your videos. (and I've seen a number). I lived in Las Vegas for a while back in the 1980s, and met Mayor Goodman (just Mr. Goodman then) several times thru mutual friends. He is still the same great character he was then! And-he really accomplished things that previous Mayors couldn't or wouldn't. By the early 1980s, Downtown LV was a depressing mess. After the Mob quit running things, QOL had dropped rapidly. Casino Gulch(Fremont Street) was a depressing mess. A handful of the old-time places like the Golden Nugget were hanging on, but for every one of those there were a dozen flophouses, dingy bars, slot casinos and aggressive panhandlers.. Even the Strip was hit or miss in those days. For every Caesar's Palace, there was a grubby bar/slot casino across the street where elderly men and women could come in, cash their social security checks, and then drink and play the slots until all their money was gone. Oscar played a major role (as I think you could tell) in redeveloping LV, particularly Downtown, and he was able to that because he: 1) was believed to be honest; and 2) he was such a character. And natives of LV in those days LOVED their characters. Thanks so much!
Seriously, thank you for this one!! I'm obsessed with stories from Las Vegas! It's such a cool and unique place. This guy is incredible, a super lawyer just doing his job, can't ever hate a man for following the constitution no matter what, even defending the mob. Also he's such a good storyteller! So this is just incredible!! When I was in Vegas years ago, my Uber was an ex mob driver! He was like 90 and even showed me old pics from the time. He was driving uber just for fun because he liked people.
THAT IS SO COOL..

We appreciate your effort and hard work as always. We will support you no matter what.
He was an exceptional mayor, and I am so happy and proud that his wife is now carrying on the legacy. What a power couple!
What a intelligent, articulate Man Mr Goodman is. He's still got it! great stories. Thank you all for making it possible
LUVED THIS!!! THANK YOU!!!
"Living like a story book" - This man has lived through it all.
Oscar is Soul Goodman
Now that’s respect!! After they left, they didn’t feel like they had to worry about his principals about attorney/client privilege. There should be a movie about HIS life!! You gotta love the stories!!
I lived in Vegas for 18 years this man is a legend and has had a lot to do with the Vegas we all enjoy today.
What a sharp, brilliant man. Great video. Gonna pass it on to as many as I can.
Oscar Goodman is a legend. I'd let him cut off one of my fingers, just to sit and hear his stories. I'm so glad you were able to make this video.
Peter, people are willing to open up to you because you always treat everyone with respect no matter who they are. Thank you for that. ❤
Thank you for this awesome video! Mayor Goodman is a legend. While stationed in Vegas you would always here about him. The Man is definitely loved and respected.
How refreshing to see an attorney with integrity! And a saver of history, I am sad when they tear down the old buildings. Loving this series Peter.
Refreshing to witness an attorney whose life's work involved defending serial murderers for a dollar. Pure integrity. Thank god there aren't attorneys who dedicate their lives to defending the poor and innocent victims. Those types of attorneys would have no integrity.
As a former Nevada citizen I highly enjoyed this Vegas segment. Thanks peter, you have made me dream even more of returning to that magical place.
This documentary will be a remarkable piece of history from the most fascinating time of Vegas and America.
