    This is much edgier with great images. Just as with 'Sounds of Silence' these guys know how to bring it! Gritty. Crunchy. And make the tune so appropriate for today and Unkraine.
    Love the allusion to 'Gulliver's Travels' (tying the big guy down). Covering a Genesis tune is not easy, but Disturbed knows what they are doing. It even has a positive vibe at the end. Great review.

      Fellow 80’s kid here, grew up on the Genesis version and so this took a while to grow on me. I can appreciate the new approach and the fact that this cover was repurposed as Draiman’s critique of W. Bush (most of Ten Thousand Fists was a criticism of the 2003 Iraq war)similar to how Genesis was never shy in their critiques of Reagan and Thatcher. It’s never easy watching history repeat.

    • @Amaranthine1000
      @Amaranthine1000 Год назад +4

      @@CrowTRobot I grew up with the original Genesis version too and I loved it the song and the video were great. But Disturbed have a remarkable ability to turn a song that was a warning like Sound of Silence and Land of Confusion into something along the lines of why the hell didn't you listen back then. The anger they express is this version is so well done, people should have listened and taken heed of what was being said, but Disturbed is showing no one did anything and now there will be hell to pay. I love both versions and I love their version of Sound of silence too, the darkness and anger that is expressed is so good and so poignant.

I have heard the Sound of Silence by them and that is good. But this cover is so much better,. I just love the drums and heavy guitar - the blend just works. And I love his voice. Like the " haw haw haw" he does in between (I believe he does it in Down With the Sickness too). Genesis is good, no doubt. But this is great and now I can't wait to turn this up in the car! As a metal-head, it'd be expected for me to say that this is better than the original. But even though I do like the original a good bit, I honestly do prefer this, like the song was meant to be metalized.
    I think the best-ever example of a remake being better than the original, that I'm requesting you react to, is Blinded By The Light. Manfred Mann's Earth Band took Bruce Springsteen's short, folky ditty and turned it into a grandiose, 7-minute prog-rock masterpiece. With one of the best-ever guitar solos.
    But please use the full studio track, as there are shortened (and live) versions out there. I'll link one that shows lyrics, as some of those are hard to decipher.

      Absolutely agree. Manfred Mann's Earth Band took 3 different songs by Bruce Springsteen ("Spirits In The Night," "Blinded By The Light" and "For You") and made each of them way better than the originals. Not even close. Amazing.

  • @gigmond
    @gigmond Год назад +2

    Definitely a great cover! But not better than the original. The heavier guitar and Dramond's voice/delivery is very cool and I enjoy listening to both versions, but there are key things about the original Genesis version that Disturbed changed which aren't better.
    1. The harmony on "oh-oh-oh". It sounds empty without it.
    2. The instrumental leading into the bridge has a cool guitar hook, which Disturbed put more of a guitar solo-ish thing. Cool in it's own way, but not better.
    3. The keyboard melody after the bridge is just better than the guitar melody Disturbed does and has a better build up feel.
    4. After the keyboard melody referred to in #3, there is a kind of half time version of the same riff that leads into all of the versus, and the last chord of it holds and sustains before the drum fill takes it to the regular time riff going into the last verse. There is an intensity to that, which isn't there in the Disturbed version because the guitar solo plays over it.
    5. That same intensity coming out of the bridge is how the Genesis version ends the song too. And it also works really well to give the song resolve in a really bold sounding way. The abrupt Disturbed ending seems impressive, but artisitically, it's just jarring and servers only to be different. The original ending is so much better.
    The orginal version isn't heavy, but it still sounds just as good today. Not "just for it's time"
    Don't get ME wrong. I do like the Disturbed version. The heavy sound is very cool! Dramond sings a lot of parts differently and does some different phrasing that is really cool.
    In may cases with covers, the cover can and should be different yet really good in it's own way, without necssarily being "better" than the original to where both songs can be enjoyed without either being better or the original being considered obsolete. This cover is almost there, but not quite.
    I would say that is the case with The Sound of Silence. Disturbed's version is really amazing and very different in a way that you can't compare which is better. Disturbed did not, and could not, do what Simon and Garunkel did, and they didn't try to. But they did it different in a cool way, while keeping the core of the song.
    Anyway, My opinion.
