F29 Retaliator for Atari ST: a flight sim for folks who don't play flight sims?

  • F29 Retaliator, developed by Digital Image Design (better known as DID in their later years) and published by Ocean, is a flight sim that keeps things relatively uncomplicated and easy to understand. Those who just want to get a cool plane up in the air and blow some stuff up with minimal fuss will have a great time, but those craving a bit more realism may not find their propellerhead itch completely scrached by this one...

I rarely got into flight sims as a kid. For a few reasons:
    - I was an idiot
    - I was extremely impatient
    - I was a pirate. Flight sims can be impenetrable without the manuals
So it’s great to watch somebody play them. Makes me think I might just be able to tackle them as an adult! 😅 Great video, Pete!

It looks very nice. I think the Chuck Yeager game was the first time flight sims really clicked with me. I'd played the Flight Simulator games but back then those were slide shows on most PCs. The Chuck Yeager game was the first time I saw a game with 3D graphics that was really fast and smooth.

F-29 seems to be a good flight game with light sim elements. Like you said, that may not be for everyone, but for someone like myself that would be more to my taste than others like what Microprose put out there. Regardless, I appreciate the look at this title and into the world of the ST. Take care and I look forward more ST videos yet to come.

A big fan of this game! As much as I loved and played F19 Stealth Fighter, I could quickly jump into F29 Retaliator and fly a mission here that played well and looked good. Fair call to say it's not for purists but an excellent introduction to the genre.

Yeah, there's definitely a place in the market for this. As with absolutely anything, the thing to do is to go in with an open mind and flexibility, and consider whether or not it is succeeding at what it is actually setting out to do, not what you _wish_ it was doing.
When taken in that sense, it's very successful at what it does, for sure.

I'd always been curious about F-29, but I can see it's certainly not one for me - I think the sim-lite aspects here are enough to keep me off. It's a shame though, as you can really see DID's technical chops in getting it running as well as it does on the hardware of the time.
Which makes the leap to TFX all that more amazing come to think of it - I guess they were limited by what they had to hand as a result.

Can definitely understand that. This is what my Dad (who was very much a "flight sim purist" who saw SubLOGIC's Flight Simulator II as the absolute pinnacle of perfection) would have called a "flight game" rather than a "flight sim".
Nothing actually wrong with that per se, particularly for those who want that simpler experience, but yeah. Definitely a tad lacking for those who want just a _touch_ of realism.

Did you use your new QuickShot II Turbo joystick for this? :D (I'm guessing not, because capturing footage)

I did not, because, as you say, emulation for capturing purposes. It's had a workout on the real Ataris though!
