  • Star Raiders II is an interesting part of Atari history. While the original Star Raiders was regarded as the Atari 8-bit's "killer app", its sequel isn't nearly as well-loved -- at least partly because it began life as something different. Still, it's worth a play -- and with The400 Mini it's easy to get up and running.

The Last Starfighter was one of the best games on ATARI 800XL.

I stayed clear of this for a long time - based on my experiences with the C64 port which was lacklustre in so many ways. I agree both that it's no patch on the original, yet still a great blast (instead of a space combat experience). Even if it's original incarnation as a tie into The Last Starfighter lacks the signature DEATH BLOSSOM, it's still a challenging experience.

Nice vid man, I remember playing this on Sepctrum back in the day. It was a quite a nice looking version on that with interesting fun gameplay. I didn't really have a clue what to do but remember the tricky spaceships trying to get them in the cross hairs! And the bombing runs, I was probably bombing home cities tho 😅 Fellow Garbage Scow Commander... 👍

Quite a good game, either as The Last Starfighter or this. I played it a lot on the atari. A little more overall depth than the original Star Raiders but simpler combat. Recharging at the sun is fun once in a while.

Glad to see you back in action. Yeah, Star Raiders II is not the original Star Raiders. But, I think what was done was pretty good and expanded on the original while also simplifying things bit to make the game more approachable for those wanting to use a controller. Kinda reminds me of what a lot of companies have done with the Steam Deck, for instance. In the meantime, take care and I look forward to many more videos yet to come.

I bought Super Woden GP II when I got my Steam Deck based on his recommendation. It was a very good purchase as I have sunk about 17+ hours into it over the course of time.

I've not seen if you did a vid on the original LSF version of this game, but one thing I do see different is in how the destroyers act on planets. In LSF they are pretty much harmless and don''t attack you. They pretty much just go straight for cities to take them out so they are much easier to pick off in that regard. While here I see they will disengage from attacking a city and throw in a few shots at the player. It also seems that in this version of the game, the enemy fleets seem to move much slower within your home system as compared to LSF where once they get through the barrier they move quickly to attack your planets. Pretty much here you can let them be a bit and go after their planet structures to take them out while in LSF any time they attack the barrier or get through it, you are on the defensive until you have them out of the system again. Still a very impressive game for the time.

I do like the explosions when you nail a ship. And something about that particular view of the planet surface scrolling under you has always appealed to me.

I had The Last Starfighter prototype on my A8, the one with the barrier destroying ships and where you recharged your energy by flying into the sun.
I always thought of Solaris as the true Star Raiders 2, being designed by Doug Neubauer and getting a level of visual performance out of the 2600 that nobody would have believed in the days of E.T.
With that said, this game had great visual effects in its own right. It was definitely more arcadey than the original, which was going for sim territory.
