- Spelunker by Tim Martin and Micro GraphicImage is famous the world over for its hero's inability to handle a fall any further than his kneecaps. It's had numerous ports and reimaginings, even to modern platforms, and has quite a following in Japan -- but as with so many popular games, it has its origins on the humble Atari 8-bit!

I like this game a lot
That was indeed brutal... but the exploring aspect kept you gripped... even if he does have weak ankles.
Honestly a pretty fun cave exploration game that is a bit undone by being a bit too hard in some aspects. Still, it was a game of the times and is still worth looking at today. Take care and I look forward to many more episodes yet to come.
I've always really enjoyed this one because the sense of exploration and wanting to get just a bit farther is very addictive to me. I'm not sure why, but it seems very particular to 8-bit games in this style - I like stuff like Metroid, too, and Spelunky as a modern take, but those are so hyper-caffeinated on sending enemies at you that they start feeling more like regular action games. Spelunker has a really balanced sense of pacing to me. Maybe it's because the only thing really chasing after you is the ghost, and everything else is more like an obstacle to navigate. It's you against the environment.
I dont think i ever got to play this way back. I heard of it but never saw it. Im going to have to put this on my list also.
This game was brutally difficult, yet somehow kept you coming back for more abuse.
The Atari was underrated compared to the C64 considering the Atari had 16 times the colors, almost twice the CPU clock, true hardware scrolling, per-line color changes for all registers, 4 channels, USB-like SIO, CIO, ANTIC GPU with its own memory and instruction set, faster drive IO and it came out FIRST 3 years before the C64. People only bought the C64 because of price and memory.
Look at the rest of my channel. You don't have to convince me of any of that. :)
Yeah. I was never impressed by the C64. The graphics, sound, and gameplay on A8 were, in most cases, better.
The player character would be right at home in an English Software game: fragile and would disintegrate just by stubbing his toe.
Ah, you played Kissin' Cousins too, I see.
@@ThisIsPete and Breath of the Dragon.
@DownHomeGamer It did remind me of Jet Boot Jack i.e. underground, lifts, easy deaths etc.
