    I love the arguments among New Yorkers about who has the best bagel and who has the best pizza. Somehow it’s like they are all right if you know what I mean. So many amazing options to fit all tastes. And most of them, even at their most average, are better than what we poor non-New Yorkers have to eat…gotta get back again to get my fix…

    Big point about Ess-a-Bagel. First, they originally were across the street, but lost their lease. After that, they moved and the partners split. One owns only the 1st avenue location and the other owns the 3rd Avenue and all the other locations around the city. For my money, the 1st Avenue location, which I started eating at during lunch breaks from Stuyvesant High School, is by far the best.
    One place you don't have on here is Russ and Daughters which makes a heavenly cream cheese, lox and bagel.

    I grew up on bagels in NY and even been to some of the Bagel shops mentioned here. What I did not hear is how you tell a really good bagel from just a bagel.
    First - you will never get a great bagel if they do not make them on the premises. You are just wasting your money.
    Second - If the shop makes all the bagel early morning before they open then you are missing out the Navona experience. A really good bagel fresh out of the oven and still warm or hot does not need anything on it. Just the texture, warmth and flavor of the bagel should be enough to send your experience to heaven.
    Third - What to look for in a bagel? The crust should be thin and crips. If not it is not freshly made.. The inside should be warm, moist and dense. but not chewy like dowy.
    Forth Toppings - Whatever your preference is; poppy, sesame, salt, garlic, everything, etc... there should be enough on the top of the bagel to cover it.
    Where I grew up there were about a half dozen bagel shops to choose from and every morning they made their bagels fresh as they sold them. Often which bagels we bought more of depended on which one just came out of the ovens., We would first get hand carved lox from the Deli next door and then the bagels. On the way home we all would eat at least 1 bagel while they were still hot. At home we would then make out bagel sandwiches with lox, slice of onion, etc... We never toasted them. You only toast a bagel that is not fresh out of the oven. Sadly few places that sell bagels don't operate the way they have in the past. and that is sad. It is harder to find a good bagel place if you don't live right by one. There are 3 around where I live and they just are not that good. All their bagels are made in advance and none I would say are traditional. They are bigger , lighter and not a real bagel.

    I’m an Orthodox Jew who keeps kosher, and I’m originally from Brooklyn. When I moved to New Jersey, and found out that to some people in my synagogue, the definition of a good bagel here is one from the grocery store, I almost had a fit. Luckily, there are 2 incredible kosher bagel stores within an hour’s drive from where I live now, both owned by non Jews and both have been open for more than 50 years. And yes, it’s worth the hour drive.

    • @HereBeBarr

    • @arimermelstein9167

      @@HereBeBarr absolutely. In my experience in brooklyn all kosher bagel stores were run by Jewish people, so the concept of non Jews opening up bagel stores that specifically wanted to be kosher was a revelation. Not that non Jews make bagels. That doesn’t surprise me of course. In New York there are hundreds of those.

      @@arimermelstein9167Ari, one question! If bagel place which is run by non Jews is trying to be kosher, what about mashgeach supposed to be on premises all the time?

    • @arimermelstein9167
      @arimermelstein9167 Год назад +3

      @@homerb3368 no, because all they make there is bagels and muffins. The mashgiach comes every so often to make sure that the ingredients they use haven’t changed (and I assume if they add a new product, they talk to him/her first). And bagel and pizza stores never shut their ovens, so assuming a Jewish person turning on the fire is enough, that happened (and happens if it needs to be refired).
      If they did any real cooking, then it would be a problem. But baking without a mashgiach is allowed.
