Something I've found old anime and style does better is grittiness in details. Stuff breaking, damaging, details in machines and buildings, the weathering, etc. Too many anime nowadays look too clean and lacks that gritty detail, particular for mecha stuff.
everything gets animated by programs nowadays, back in the day they used to animate frame by frame which makes everything looks just so much better, kinda like disney was back in the day, its expensive and very time consuming but worth it
@@sargera1 Mamoru Nagano, the artist who wrote the Five Star Stories and designed the Knight of Gold is the guy who designed the Hyaku Shiki, along with other Sunrise mecha like the L-Gaim. I know Volks made both plastic and resin kits of this one but they're expensive.
to be fair, alot of anime movies in modern time have that same level of detail. anime movie budget are not the same as anime tv shows. the art style back than definitely hit different though.
Kids will fail to see this and think two blender characters walking down a hallway at an interpolated 60 fps is the ultimate form of expressive animation.
Bro you said it so beautifully!!. New animation is more like technology based...not art based..like Japanese anime of the 90s. These scenes are so beautiful!!!
This is not even 60fps but probably 1 drawing per frame. Most anime if they can they will go for 1 draw each 2 frame(mostly anime movie have the budget to do that) but a lot them will change between 2/3/4 draw per frame following the dudget
I used to think animation would get better over time. And it has in some ways in terms of framerate, resolution and all of that. But when it comes to the detail and artistry that is captured in the animation I think we are past the golden era.
@@mannycalavera2335 That's nonsense. Is just nostalgia. Is impressive particularly because is cell animation, and that makes it impressive. But it also help us look over all over the imperfections that would get a lot of scrutiny if it was launched today, such as the trembling lineart of the characters at 0:57-0:59, lack of consistency in character design or the fact that a lot of the animation, is just still images, with some moving parts. The advancement in modern animation goes beyond framerate and resolution. Is the evolution in direction and technique, consistency in design and lineart, effects that make everything look more cinematographic and realistic, and much more.
@@Silentpixel2024 The lineart size doesn't change until the very end. And this has nothing to do with any wind, is just inconsistency. Does the design and structure of the face change from the wind too? Or does the mouth appear or disappear in-between frames from wind?
@@Silentpixel2024 There is nothing realistic about this, nor does cell animation hold any monopoly over that. Realism is all about character design and direction, not the animation technique. Cowboy Bebop and Ghost Shell is Cell animated... and so is Doraemon, and Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon or Slayers.
@@Silentpixel2024 'what do you mean talking about "trembling lineart"?? The lineart gets smaller the further the camera goes away. They literally need to adjust to small/big brushes everytime.' - no it doesn't. Tremblind lineart is line that 'trembles' because there are inconsistencies in the position of the lineart in each frame, and that makes the lineart tremble in every section that has movement. You can notice clearly where there is actual animation, and where you have just a still image with a section moving - like a still image of a face, where just the mouth is animated. Modern animation got way better at hiding inconsistencies, and trembling lines are hidden post production trough blur, effects, or just being done overall just better. 'bruh 2d animations are all still images. They don't move bro. 2d animation use several still images to bring the scene to life.' - here you are just trying to be a smartass. 'I don't see any inconsistency that is relevant to distract the viewers attention.' - that's your problem, and is irrelevant to my argument. My argument is that those inconsistencies and defects get a passing just because is retro-cell animation. If a modern animated movie was produced with this level of 'quality', all those issues would be severely scrutinized.
I watched The Five Star Stories on VCR over and over. No subtitles, no understanding of Japanese, an extremely confusing mix of clothing styles, a confusing plot, and some amazing moments of 80's mecha design and soundscapes. That heal spike slamming down to stabilize the Gold Knight, for example, is deeply ingrained into my memories.
