On this thread, upto 70s, Indian Railways seemingly had only the wooden planks as berths for second class ticket holders. Madhu Dandavate, an Indian Politician with immense integrity, who was Railways Minister then decided to add 2 inches of foam, with the rationale that a ticket purchasing passenger needs at-least this much to have a decent nights sleep. This was made compulsory in all trains in only few years. We all owe a lot to him if we ever slept comfortably in a train. He also launched computer reservations, Konkan Railways (yes, in 70s itself). Thank you Sir.
Prof.Madhu Dandavathe as Railway minister in 1977 of Janata party at the Centre., added this foam mattress in Railway wooden berth.Unfortunately his tenure also marred by much accidents.
Very true. Late madhu dandavate, professor of physics was an outstanding politician during his time. When he was the railway minister, his son would go to book railway station tickets standing in the queue with others. Such was the ethical values followed by him. When the news was read in doordarshan about his appointment as railway minister, he was washing clothes at home and came to know news thru TV.
Re-write the history books. My dad was a railway employee. @01:13 the pic which displayed is the place near by i worked and whenever i passed through that point i was intrigued by what wiould have been there and why there is a station. Since it was on the banks of Coovum i thought it was boat stops, but now got the history of the stop. yet another fascinating information by Mr.Sriram

Like many people who are in late seventies, I too had driven in car and boarded train in Egmore railway station. It never used to be crowded. A similar facility was available in Howrah railway station too and one can drive away in your car after alighting from the train. I think this facility still exists there.. not sure of it!
Very interesting information. I worked for 40 years in Railways. It has grown steadily. First steam traction, second diesel and third electric traction. It has developed capacity to produce modern coaches on par with foreign countries. Those trains will stop enroute for watering steam engines. Trains will stop for longer duration in the nominated meals stations. There used to be an Inter class. Railways have work force of 13 lakh employees. Railways have their own departments like Enginnering,Mechanical, Electrical, Signal and Telecommunication. They don't depend on outside agencies. Now Govt is planning to outsource many activities. Gandhiji used to travel in 3rd class only. When someone asked why he travels he replied"because there is no 4th class"!
