The biggest two pieces of advice I've learned in my 2.5 years of arting is one; to be patient with yourself, and two; never compare your beginning to someone else's middle.
These may sound cliché, but those are the two things that have helped me the most since I stated taking my art seriously.
The thing about patience is we never truly fail, we just stop trying. We have to give ourselves the chance to make it, because it won't come quickly, and it won't be easy.
Comparing your beginning to someone else's middle is probably the worst thing we can do to ourselves. This is what a psychologist would probably call _upward social comparison._
Its when we encounter someone we perceive as superior. Maybe they draw better, maybe they have more followers then we do. Its these kinds of thoughts that cause adverse and even destructive thinking or actions.
Remember that those people have already done what you are trying to do. They're not better, they've just been at it and are further along on the road you just started.
Focus on your own goals and abilities, and you'll develop tunnel vision that will take you where you're going.

A lot of sense here. Embrace the fear of sharing what you love and it’s infectious!

Loved this ep! I've been on and off social media for a while now, i almost never check Facebook and the last time i checked my screen time on Instagram was like, 20 minutes (two hours less than last week lol). Louise's path as an artist is really interesting from someone who's starting to take their own work more serious.
I was specially surprised about the issue with tutorials in RUclips. As someone with not money and limited resources everything I've learn about art has come from this platform, i guess I haven't really think about how this kind of content affects the growth of online artists and teachers. Makes appreciate it even more ❤️✨

This was such a great episode! I loved the topic as I don't feel it's talked about super often. I'm definitely the type of artist that jumps on Insta to post and jumps off. The more time I spend there, the less happy I feel. So I do my business, make sure my audience is updated, and head on out.
I love that we all have our own way of directing our art career - and there's so many different ways! For my journey, I've decided to avoid taking commission work since it gives me anxiety and simply make a living off of the original ideas/illustrations filling my head. At the moment, that means I travel all across the U.S. to comic conventions to sell my art. It's been amazing and I feel incredibly happy and motivated.
    Keep up the great podcast!

Thank you for this candid, generous and insightful discussion. I’d also like to acknowledge how masterful of a job the interviewers did in listening. You did such a commendable job in providing time/space/comfort/patience for @Art by Louise to speak. Thank you to the three of you! 🌞

I totally understand the skillshare thing from the artists perspective. But also I am soooo tired , especially on instagram, from every second story and post being an advertisement for either skillshare, domestica or for the artists patreon account, the artists downloads one can buy, the link to workshops and livestreams one can buy… I feel like so many are just selling out and there’s advertisements everywhere. Everyone is just selling all the same, but I just want to see the artists art on instagram. And if I want to book a workshop, I click the the bio or the artists website and search for it. I feel like this over-offering of workshops and so on started during the pandemic. Before, a lot of artists/ accounts went live on insta just in a livestream. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy to pay for a tutorial or workshop, I just want to decide myself, when to search for it and don’t want to be overly exposed to all these ads.

Another great episode 😀 I post art on a few different social media platforms, but dont pay too much attention to the algorithm or likes, likes and comments are nice of course but if no one likes or comments on something it doesnt make me any less successful of an artist. I post most of my art to maybe bring a smile to someone's face or at the very least maybe inspire someone else to create art. I consider myself successful because I create, not based on social media likes or even sales (that helps tho lol)

Tip about tutorials on youtube. The artwork must absolutely speak for itself so your thumbnail should be entirely filed with the art and then maybe just include a hand with a brush or whatever so people can see it is the actual artwork. If that artwork is very attractive and well executed, people will click. When I looked for a grass tutorial, I wanted to find one where the grass was realistic and convincing looking. I came across Michael James Smith who does realistic landscapes mostly in oils. He just passed a million subs and some of his vids have a few million views. There's hardly any text on any thumbnail throughout his entire channel. it really is the art that draws people in. Use the title to communicate what's in the vid for tutorials and let the art own that thumbnail. You want people to see the artwork and wonder how the heck you produced it. I'm certainly no general youtube expert but that is one thing I did learn about tutorials.

Leaving IG and FB is healthy. Overall, social media is totally useless for so many people because they don't own the platforms, and they have no control over the content they share.

Excellent! Louise, I am heading over to your channel, to subscribe and binge watch your content, after I finish watching this podcast episode. I’m not yet halfway through, and I find that I am strongly resonating with everything you are saying.
Kelsey & Al, this is your best episode yet, in my opinion. Keep up the terrific work.
My family has multi-generational experience living with significant mental health challenges. Finding ways to feel better is an ongoing quest, both for the infirm and for the caregivers. Art can be one way. ❤️
Thank you all for being open about the importance of mental well-being, for expressing your vulnerabilities, and for doing all that you do to provide value to us.

I am loving soooo much your podcast! Every new episode is as interesting or even more as the one before😍 It's so interesting listening to how good is to be a teacher at skillshare, even more in this horrible time with algorithms in places like Instagram 🙄 So thank you to show us that we can do it without all that pressure with having an audience!! ❤️

Interesting talk! Oddly enough, as the opposite perspective, I actually feel more pressure and stuff on RUclips than on Instagram XD Like on IG, I can post my finished art and people can see what I have done clearly take it or leave it, and I use it to talk to people and make pals artists or not., supporting each other (Tho, I do make art that is for a niche audience that relies on online social media community, such as fandoms and such, and I err on the side of wanting to entertain with stories, ocs, and such, as opposed to offering education/advice services) While on RUclips, I feel more pressured to make things that are deemed "interesting to watch", with B roll, camera angles, video quality, video topics and etc, or so feel like what I have done video wise not as interesting, ahaha. I was never an analytics kind of person so I never cared about the algorithm or art trends on IG XD. I feel that for both platforms, there is this sense of "making the content people signed up for" and that on RUclips there is this default way I see a lot of artists make their videos lol.
Video wise yea, I LOVE long form content, not a fan of short form content at all lol, prefer seeing RUclips videos than people using reels on IG or reposted TikToks ahaha. I think RUclips also is a cool way for artists to look at other artists they otherwise might not on Instagram, because videos focus on not just the end product of art, but on an artist's journey, be it in the simplistic sense of sketch to final piece, or bigger in how the artist finds themselves. With my own RUclips videos that are works in profess, are definitely more of an inside look on my life and thoughts than my IG posts for sure XD Different strokes for different folks, or as put here, different roads :] !

I totally get what you mean!! Instagram is so easy to just post and vibe haha!! Like whatever artwork ive done lately, just take a picture and boom done! But youtube takes so much thought and work and preparation. They each have their own pros and cons but i completely get what you mean! -Al
