    Loved this episode!
As an Asian I've always been quite anxious or doesn't feel like I'm mentally and physically ready to start an art RUclips channel due to my overthinking issues and the past two years has made it more difficult for me.
I also think that being "Pretty" does play a huge part in success and everything we do in our life. I've seen some amazing youtubers who literally have the same niche however the Prettier one usually gets more subscribers and views ( Life is sadly unfair however we all have some sort of unfair advantage that we can use it as a strength ).

Hey, I just want to say that I really appreciate this episode - In particular the audience entitlement segment.
I haven’t been able to succinctly put into words what it is about getting a following that is uncomfortable until you said audience entitlement.
I very suddenly blew up on Instagram this year, I’m talking went from less than 1k to 15k in a matter of a few months - and the level of closeness people feel towards me is INSANE.
I get DMd all the time about their personal lives, propositions to work together, getting unsolicited life advice (not just art, but about family rearing because there’ll be a photo of my kids hands while they draw with me in my stories or something) and it makes me so deeply uncomfortable because they don’t know me. And more importantly, I don’t know them.
We’re not friends. So please don’t talk to me like we are.
Please don’t have unrealistic expectations of me, of where I am in my career, and then also feel entitled enough to my time that you think I’ll reply to your uncomfortably personal DM.
The sudden influx of people feeling like we’re friends had me end up taking a break from posting because I hated it, but felt like I couldn’t complain because gaining followers is literally the goal of posting your art online. And yeah, I was prepared for hate comments, but I was not prepared for people crossing boundaries because I replied to one of their comments.
It’s like people who touch your pregnant stomach - I don’t know you, it’s wildly inappropriate and it crosses so many boundaries, but people feel entitled to it because they can see a certain aspect of your life and want to “celebrate” it. It comes from good intentions but just makes the person receiving it uncomfortable and not knowing how to respond without being perceived as callous.
But thank you again for touching on this subject, because I felt like I was in the wrong for not wanting people to interact so overly friendly with me

I find you guys saying that hate comments can still bother a bit fascinating. I always assumed that at level, you would stop caring.

It’s very insightful to hear you both talk about parasocial relationships and how uncomfortable that can be to navigate. I’m an introvert who can be awkward/overwhelmed in social situations, so it’s something I’ve worried about here and there if I were ever to get a bigger following. Great podcast! Can’t wait to hear more!

Very interesting hearing about the awkward comments and attachment/entitlement from some followers! Also interesting hearing your opinions on "pretty privilege". I think it's definitely more of a thing on platforms like Instagram or tiktok, but the beauty about RUclips is that people are looking for value vs. something/one to look at. Much like a relationship-- your looks might grab the initial attention, but people won't stay around if you have nothing else to offer.
This is a great podcast, I've been enjoying drawing while I listen!

Your reply to the religious person was freaking hilarious!! I think you should start saving the really funny ones and do another podcast with them later because this was fun 🤣 once on my Facebook I got a comment where someone was like "I don't see why people like this art, it's not even realistic" and I was so excited because then I felt like a real artist 🙃

Please!! More!! Of this podcast!! I’ve been binging the episodes and I love it. I’ve been a long time viewer of Al’s and I think it’s really cool to hear more of her perspective. And this pod has introduced me to Kelsey, who I will be checking out!!
I’m an artist too and I’m interested in hearing a more in depth explanation of your experience with selling prints/stickers/originals. I’m going to start selling my prints on Etsy and it’s pretty intimidating. From where to get them made, to calculating shipping prices, and how to keep professional and confident when this is such a foreign thing.
Congrats on the podcast, and I hope it keeps growing for you guys!!

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pretty people using that to their advantage. But I think that most people feel like they can’t be successful on RUclips unless they fit that image of beauty. I think that’s why there’s so many people who want to create a RUclips channel without ever showing their face on camera. After I had my son I ended up with a thyroid condition that makes it very hard for me to maintain a healthy weight. But if a viewer wouldn’t know that or care, they would just say something rude. I have old videos on a channel from when I was younger. It makes me self-conscious to think that someone could find those videos, compare them to videos I would make now, and be like, “wow she’s gotten old!” I also think people who don’t normally wear make up would feel pressured to do so. The internet makes us feel like we have to post perfect fake selfies. There is a reason the term “pinterest worthy” exists. If not I think more people have channels and talking head videos.

That is a really great point! I think the relationship between our appearance and our success online is a very complex one that I go back and forth on! I know for me personally, it’s actually helped me be more accepting of myself and my appearance! I think this topic deserves its own episode! -Al

I love to make colorful art pieces that doesn't look like realistic but my little brother would come and be like, 'hey what is this? It doesn't look real
    at all? "
Or sometime he would come with some pictures of realistic art that he found online to show me and ask,"Look so perfect! can you make art like this?"
If I say " it is truely awesome but I don't make art like this I am not talented like them!"
He would make upset noises and say then what I do all day? And that I am wasting money buying colors..
There was exam going on so I didn't paint much but bought some paint that I wanted to for ages and kept them so that I could paint when my exams were done.
But he would say that I am wasting money and that I don't paint so why I am buying them.
He is really young, only 11 years old and he helps me a lot!and I am sure he doesn't say those to deliberately upset me. And there was a lot of moments when he actually liked my art too and came to me to paint a picture in front of his book. That was really cute of him! I know that I shouldn't be upset about his comments but I can't help:(
Also i realize how hard it is for a artist like myself who doesn't paint realism.
lot of people doesn't appreciate the art that doesn't look "Real".

My mom spent half my life (I'm 31) telling me not to practice "anime" style, questioning me why I dont make her a landscape painting (I am a character artist??), and to this day, if I feel like showing her a piece, she will immediately look for the first thing she can give me "constructive criticism" for 💀
In moments like this, I try to remember that on top of the fact that she has different tastes, I will always have more context than her about what I like to make and what goals I want to strive for. I consider her intent to be more clumsy than malicious.
It can be disheartening but it doesnt change that there will always be an audience of other people that vibe with what you make. 💕

When I posted my first realistic portrait on Instagram that I was extremely proud of, I got a comment saying “You just used a reference photo from google. Takes skills but not artistic talent. Yawn.” At first it didn’t bother me, but it slowly started to get under my skin.

oof, that sucks. Realism takes an immense amount of technical knowledge and patience, it's a completely valid and well respected artistic pursuit, don't let that commenter get you down. All they did was comment something nasty but you made something beautiful, pretty clear to see who the winner here is IMO

The reason people make hate comments is because they have issues and trying to shoot others down is their selfish and narcissistic way of dealing with it. Really, they are jealous and hate that you have something going for you when they do not. For anyone that reads this who likes to make such comments, just remember that your comments reflect you only...nobody else...just you.

ah the joys of internet trolls and bullies, were would the net be without them...oh yeah a much happier brighter place
I can so relate to getting criticism about everything growing up, its def not good but it did make me prepared for any negative comments and can just ignore them and it did make getting feedback at uni easier
people thinking that we/creators/artist are there for other people's entertainment is so entitled its not funny
lol 'little bit ugly artists', great band name 😀

Building up a thick skin is a painful process and probably not worth it but it does definitely come in handy when you start putting yourself (and your work) out there more. Ignoring anything that isn't truly useful feedback for you is absolutely the way to go, agreed! - Kelsey
