  • Jak and Daxter haven't had a sequel in 12 years...15 if you only count the Naughty Dog ones. The Last of Us 2 proved that the developer is long dead but maybe another company will revive the franchise someday. It truly deserves better than this.

I've never fully understood why Sly never took off like the other two, I've yet to find a single person who outright dislikes them and most people who have played them give them high praise or just staight up gush, but for whatever reason they never quite hit the level of mainstream success and notoriety as the other big PS2 series. I remember seeing Sly 2 and 3 adds pretty regularly so it's not lack of advertising, R&C and Jak at least after the first game are all solid T rated series so it isn't an age gate thing either. It's not just a personal anecdote either Sly sold noticably less than the other 2 series, it sold well enough but it never really exploded just kinda quietly turned a profit with diminishing returns. Really really weird situation and I can't figure out exactly why it happened. Also I will never get over the wasted oppurtunity that is the lack of Sly skins in Persona 5, a match made in heaven that would print money and they never took advantage, I guess that's what mods are for but still.

    • @Skitskl33
      @Skitskl33 3 года назад +23

I think its partly because at the time Ratchet and Jak had the shooter gunplay action stuff that appealed to a wider audience while Sly was about stealth platforming and avoiding conflict.

Sony/Naughty Dog never sold Crash, in fact neither party ever owned him to begin with. The OG contract between Naughty Dog and Universal Interactive was that they would develop the original trilogy, and once that was done that was that. Universal Interactive owned Crash from the start. They had a similar deal inked with Insomniac and Spyro. Once Crash Warped was made, Sony stepped in directly to help with CTR since that was outside the terms of the contract, but once that game was released, the contract was complete and Crash was sent to the multiplat pasture passed around from dev to dev like a cheap whore.
(CTR remake is better than it has any right to be please port to PC)

@Mykell Schexnayder Crash Bandicoot did belong to Sony, the original IP was created by Naughty Dog for PlayStation and owned by Sony. After Naughty Dog was done with Crash, Sony sold the IP to Konami in 2001 who made a deal with Universal Interactive to bring Crash to Xbox and PlayStation etc, Konami owned the IP and Universal Interactive published the games. Konami sold the IP to Vivendi Universal Games which was then Vivendi who merged with Activision and became defunct so then Activision became the new IP owner, which through a merger became Activision Blizzard. So Sony, Konami, Vivendi then Activision

Bro, don't sleep on Jak X. I've never played a faster, more intense racer. So much Carnage on the track, races have a good tug and pull to them, it utilizes eco in a creative way, plus series faithful art design to the tracks. The story's a nitty gritty dive into backstabbing crime syndicates at War with eachother with tension at every turn cuz you don't know who to trust, and the kickass soundtrack is composed by Billy Howerdell of A Perfect Circle.

I get what you mean, and it seems that the Japanese almost universally hated the drastic shift in tone when it came to the sequels.
For me, I was absolutely stoked about Jak II taking a darker turn as a kid. Keep in mind I was still at that age where I thought Shadow the Hedgehog was cool, so the "edgy" atmosphere alone made it all the more appealing. I still remember my parents showing me that they managed to buy a copy of Jak II early before my birthday rolled around, which came with a strategy guide of the game. My parents told me I couldn't play it until my birthday, but I remember begging them to let me read the strategy guide so I could at least learn more about what's to come, and they agreed to let me keep that. I just poured myself over it reading about where the story took Jak and imagining how all of the missions would turn out.
Looking back as an adult, I'm not as fond of the elements like Dark Jak as I once was as a kid, and I feel The Precursor Legacy aged much better. Still, I think the Jak sequels have settled themselves into defining the Jak series as a whole. I always wondered if another studio could make games based on the classic formulas of Sony's franchises, such as making another Jak title in the style of The Precursor Legacy, or making a Sly Cooper title in the style of the first entry in his series.

Sucks for us that Naughty Dog employees apparently don't miss Jak or Crash according to ND employee Josh Scherr. I'll tell you this, the people currently working at ND today practically had _zero_ input on shaping the Crash and Jak franchises, and Druckmann was incapable of making another entry in the Jak series when suggested by Evan Wells.
In fact, Druckmann would rather make interactive movies chasing whatever trend is going on in identity politics and model the characters' individual nose hairs and boogers rather than focusing on how fun the game actually is. After all, they apparently don't even use the word "fun" to describe the games they make anymore nor do they even think in terms of "fun" with their game design philosophy. Druckmann has really run the studio into the ground, and the mass exodus of talented staff leaves me wondering how in the world is Naughty Dog preparing itself for the PS5 generation? Are they just going to do ports of their PS4 titles with extra bells and whistles?

I really like the series but I feel that if the game series kept going, it could've went downhill even further than the Lost Frontier. And I just don't have faith that a third developer company could really give us a continued Jak game that properly continues the story without coming off like a fanfiction. That said, while I' not completely sold on having Jak return, a small part of me is open to the idea. After seeing how Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time was handled and how it felt like a TRUE NATURAL continuation of the original trilogy, a small part of me thinks that this could be done for Jak as well but only if it gets picked up people who know the Jak universe with the characters, lore, and overall atmosphere. Anyway I think we should just be happy that the series exists and that the games get re-released on newer Playstation consoles so every generation gets to try them out because even with Jak 2, I think the games held up fairly well.

I'm not the Synthetic man but I can give you an answer.
If Universal never left with Crash, the franchise would be dead and buried after CTR on PS1. We can look at Jak & Daxter for confirmation on that because Naughty Dog doesn't want to be stuck doing the same thing constantly. Although, Sony did approach Activision to bring Crash back in 2016 so if they owned it, Crash would have returned under one of Sony's studios like Asobi or Japan Studio, however the PS2 games and Bash would have never existed. As for CTR Nitro Fueled and It's About Time, it's hard to tell if they would exist if Sony owned the rights, I think Sony would remake CTR, just not as a live service Activision style.
Tl;dr: Overall, I think Crash wouldn't have the reputation in the mud from the 2000s games but the franchise would spend more years buried.

D kRule I'm guessing that's the Tank mission that takes place after the Pumping Station mission

I really, really want to see a game like this one but with the scale and combat of more modern games, that would be pretty rad, I think u would have to use some kind of metroidvania like system to justify the lenght though

I don't want Jak becoming gay and Daxter being furry or some kind of fur fetishist. Nowdays ND is nothing compared to true ND from ps2 and ps3 era

If you're an achievement hunter, Jak And Daxter is a fairly easy platinum.
Plus it a great game. No politics no agenda, just fun.

Favorite game of all time, something about it just makes it timeless to come back to. Music was such a vibe and very unique, can't think of any other game that replicated it.

To this day, I still have my copy of the Jak & Daxter Trilogy on my PS3, same with Sly & Ratchet as well!

I consider it imbedded in the west's disrespect for the animation medium and it's needless insistence in ultra realistic games connected.

The sacred trilogy of PS3 trilogies: Jak, Sly and Ratchet. Who could have thought these trilogies would go up in price so much.

What we should add for a new Jak and Daxter game is an "aim & shoot" mechanic, new and interesting weapon mods, new eco power-ups, a mechanic where you can summon Daxter to solve puzzles, and of course a new combat formula. We should also give a light and dark tone and make the new J&D game a Zelda BOTW open world game too.

Great job highlighting everything great about the first game. It's the reason I was most excited about getting a PS2. There is still nothing like this first one! I agree it's the best and the coolest to me. I love the light hearted nature of it and colorful world. Jak is one of the most heroic!

Have you noticed that Daxter and Crash have so many in common? Both are orange, have gloves without fingers, yellow belly, both created by naughty dog. Don't tell me that's coincidence :D

jak and daxter 2 was hard an crazy but the 3rd was a great game fighting the metal heads in a war in the city and you could drive round a pretty decent sized desert map aswell

I got into video game from naughty dog from Jak and Daxter then playing crash 2 and three a lot . And it sucks to see they don't care since last of us 2 . If they do make a sequel I hope they can get some of the old member who left the company .

You definitely don’t have to like collectathons to really enjoy this game. It’s the exploration and the world that really bring you into it.
