THere is an often overlooked quality in guitarplaying which is “authority”. What I mean by that is putting every note out there with absolute conviction, like rallying behind it. The result doesn’t have to be explosive mind you, it can be all subtle and quiet, but all the great blues masters had that quality. There is just no fluff in there and if there is, there is still that will to pick it up and do something with that is truly meant and can be put out there with a full heart. I suspect this requires the player to have gone through that serious s process of personal artistic choice so that what is avalible to put out is only stuff worth getting behind, which means the impro is never a wild goose chase. But I also think that true “voice” simply does that work as well and that it is both something that is found and created but most of all brought to the fore with no distractions or chasing random styles or licks etc.

Originally written bt Elmore James in 1959, it has since been recorded by Albert King and Stevie Ray Vaughan, and of course this wonderful version by the late great Gary Moore. No doubt it has also been performed by other blues players without being recorded. It is such a classic blues song.

I have to agree. I'm not a kid today, and I'm primarily listening to black blues. But nothing else had caused such a cathartic effect. For a long time, though, I looked at Gary with suspicious eyes as someone who later called for the blues train. But seeing these late shots is one of the biggest. Not as a composer, but as a performer.

What gets me is that Clapton, Page and Blackmore had all the publicity with half the talent of Gary. The people that Gary played with should be shouting from the rooftops (even today!) about his fantastic instinctive blues prowess. Also people at the top of the blues and rock music genre should be highlighting his music.

Blackmore is up there with Gary as being extremely underrated. Both of them didn't get even half the recognition that Page, Clapton and others got which is a shame because I think Ritchie and Gary are better than both of them.

He was one with his guitar, as a part of his body he could do anything when he expressed a feeling through this instrument. Technically a master of all styles he could just let the emotions come out in a way a very few other guitarists ever could. Maybe bad english, sorry for that, but the love and appreciation I have for this musician or magician if you will is beyond everything....wow, always cry when I'm listening to him, RIP Great man!❤️

@@pwi9161 Indeed. The metal guitarists are fast, but in my view, don't have the soul, creative melodies, sheer passion, of players like Gary Moore, SRV, Alvin Lee (Ten Years After), Eric Clapton, Walter Trout, and the great blues masters like Buddy Guy, Albert and Freddy King. Gary Moore was probably the greatest ever for combining soul, intensity, and sheer kick ass skill on guitar.
