  • @HVG67
    @HVG67 5 лет назад +56

    Wrong and by the way: you show and don't explain! NATO has the the extra part under the watch so makes it bigger. Technically you have 3 ring NATO and 4 ring NATO (the buckle is not really a ring, but they keep calling then 5 ring). Zulu has no extra part under the watch and only 2 rings and the buckle (or again: if you want call it 3 ring).. so to sum up: you show 4 NATO bands (3 and 4 rings or 3 and 5 if you call the buckle a ring) and one Zulu which is by definition a 2 ring strap (again: 3 if you call the buckle a ring)...

      If one take as definition for "NATO" strap the ones that follow British MoD DEF STAN 66/15 of December, 1973, the ones with rounded four keepers (loops) was not a "NATO" strap, because the MoD specification is just 3 keepers (loops).
      Someone say in another video that the "ZULU" name came because back in time a American company - International Watchman Inc.; register the name "NATO" as their trademark, so who want sell NATO straps in USA need pay taxes for then. Due this another company created the brand "ZULU", with models with one layer and 3 keepers (loops, and two layers with 4 keepers (loops).
      Fortunately the Chinese companies gives bananas for USA comercial rules, and their "NATO" straps became available for everyone.
      Anyway this matter is moot, today "NATO" strap became definition for any strap made in Nylon, Canvas, Leather...with 1 or 2 layer, also in two parts... even the strap model used by Sean Connery in 1964 James Bond movie - that was released 9 years before the British Mod DEF STAN 66/15 specifications, became a... "NATO strap".

    One thing that always makes me laugh is putting a NATO strap on a Russian watch

    • @renngretsch
      @renngretsch 3 года назад

      I'll bite...NATO is just a name the British gave the strap they introduced...it has nothing to do with the North Atlantic Treaty.
      And yes, I do know Russia was not an independent country in the times of NATO v the Eastern Bloc.

    This may have been mentioned below, but there are two significant benefits of the 5-ring Zulu over a standard NATO strap. First, don't simply pass the strap through the bottom two rings. Instead, pass them through and then loop the strap end back between them. That way when you put on the watch and cinch down to tighten it to your wrist, you aren't putting any pressure on the bottom spring bar. The tension gets held by the friction of the strap as it passes between the two rings. Secondly, Zulus use larger rings than NATOs and therefore they can be "flipped" or rotated on the axis of their attachment point. So, after you put your watch on, pass the remaining end of the strap up and through the two "top" rings, over the uppermost one, and then under the second one. Then you can rotate the second ring upward, creating a point of friction between those two rings. If your buckle pin fails, that tension should help hold the watch on your wrist.

    Jesus. I, a Russian, was quite surprised by the first watches shown here, the good ol' Amphibia. not something I would expect outside of the country.
    I've never had them though. My grandpa always had his "Komandirskiye" ("Commander's"), other popular Vostok watches. But they are the cheapest and he buys new ones every couple of years (quality has gone downhill since the ussr collapse). But hey, these cost a bottle of whiskey and he always brings them to fish when it's -40 degrees (both C or F, huehuehue).
    I myself only have soviet "Pobeda" (victory), when it comes to russian watches. made in the 1950s, sometimes they run too fast, but I like the old school looks when worn with tweed suit
    anyway they look too tiny for today's "men watches", kinda hard to find long enough wristband, they are usually ladies size and my arm is well.. not among the smallest.

    So, where's the explanation?

  • @wolfgangandrewx2416
    @wolfgangandrewx2416 4 года назад +2

    Never understood how that bit, not attached to the watch in any way. Is considered a safety feature. With or wiithout the extra bit it would be the same if one of the pins came out.

    • @Sokol10
      @Sokol10 3 месяца назад

      The extra band can be a safety feature when you remove the clock from the wrist, avoid that the clock slide over the bigger band and fall on the ground.
      Now the safety feature against pin failure is the fact that the bigger band pass over the pins and under the strap, if one pin broken the other keep the clock attached bot the strap, in a two pieces strap, the clock will fall.
      The two bandas is not a "NATO" strap new feature, are in WW2 era British military strap - e.g. VB Hygienique and in the commercial 1908 "Victor" strap.

  • @timickan
    @timickan 7 лет назад +4

    I find the extra rings to be of no benefit whatever and prefer the cleaner 3 ring straps. I realise that the extra loop is there to stop the watch head from rotating, but I have never had any of my watches move one bit without it. I also do not see the point of having a nylon loop strap like all of those seen in this video (which obviously give peace of mind if a strap pin goes) and having a pinned buckle. The extra safety of the band is useless as the pin on the buckle becomes the weak point in the strap.
    Thanks for the video.

      The loop strap has nothing to do with pin breakage. It's to stop the head falling off when not on your wrist. Some heads are more susceptible than others.

    It's a bit of a taboo to have leather on a dive watch.
    So you're asking yourself what's the purpose of a leather zulu band, right? They work with your explorer watches like a seiko alpinist or a Rolex explorer. Those watches are not dive nor dress. They're in between watches like a pilot watch.
    Btw, the zulus feel more comfortable because leather just feels better in general. It molds to your skin and let's you breathe.

    • @anacquiredtaste3582
      @anacquiredtaste3582  7 лет назад

      Natos have a buckle and three rings squared off vs Zulus 5 rings being more rounded. I find a more precise and comfortable fit with the 5 and 3 ring Zulus. You can snug them down just right.

    • @judgejoebrown9575
      @judgejoebrown9575 7 лет назад +1

      Because it isn't always enough depending on your wrist size. Natos just hold down excess strappage better. If you're one to cut off excess and flame-seal the ends, Natos are fine. I prefer Zulus.

    I installed the NATO strap as you described and I ran into a problem: when resting my forearm on a table, the buckle has a big chance of scratching the table surface. So why installing the strap this way (beginning from the 12 o'clock side of the watch) and not from the 6 o'clock side - which reduces the scratching chance?
