Re: abortions There is a group within the Democrat Party who believe that a woman’s right to choose an abortion should be right up to the moment of birth, not as Ms Shriver states abortion until the fetus is viable. This is not where most Americans from both parties are.
It's wild how health is a state issue, and yet women unthinkingly swallow this nonsense. I've also heard people parroting the idea that women with ectopic pregnancies will be left to die! An ectopic "pregnancy" is where the ovary is fertilized within the body but not in the uterus. It is not a viable pregnancy and it would be second degree homicide should anyone deny such a woman access to having the foetus removed
This is complete misinformation! The only time this would be allowed is when the fetus is dead/dying and the life of the mother is at risk. See the growing list of mothers in this situation who have been dying in states with draconian abortion bans. These mothers wanted these babies. Abortion is health care. Abortion as a woman's choice about her body always has a time limit (usually 6-12 weeks).
@@hsmd4533 Let me explain. There are abortions that are ELECTIVE surgery. This is when the woman chooses to terminate a pregnancy. Democrats (and all pro-choice groups) have always supported restricting this to the period of gestation before 12 weeks as this is when the fetus is mostly a bundle of cells. This is the limit for elective abortions in all pro-choice countries. There are also abortions that are EMERGENCY surgeries: to reduce risk of lethal complications after a natural miscarriage, to save a woman's life when her late-term fetus is already dead, etc. These are the only abortions permitted after 12 weeks. Not giving women these life-saving health care measures is resulting in their deaths. Not very pro-life to let women die who could have been saved. Between 80-90% of Americans supported keeping Roe vs Wade. The state ballots just showed a majority also supporting pro-choice.
I love listening to (and reading) Shriver. She has the insight and vocabulary to describe exactly what most of us feel about Harris. I recall seeing Harris on a chat show where she was asked if she can shoot a gun. You could see her mind working and thinking that being able to shoot sounds powerful - so she said yes. She then regretted that when the interviewer pressed her with "what do you shoot, a handgun or a rifle?". She was now visibly panicking - she stammered "a handgun" and tried to close down the conversation topic with a maniacal laugh - but the interviewer then asked - "do you own a gun?" Now she was terrified, what should she say? She said something like "yes, but I have no more to say on this". She is a person of no substance or conviction.
People were scared under Democrats divisive identity policies. Not an American but seems like Democrats set race relations back a century. Hope Americans can heal now .
I fear for Donald Trump's safety, there's no limit to what some crazy people will do to stop him becoming President, as we've already seen twice at least.
What puzzles me is why people, like Shriver, are saying that Democrats' hyperbolic castigation of Trump was a major reason for Harris' failure, but Trump's apocalyptic language, his insults and exaggerations didn't turn off Americans in the same way? Sure, the Democrats called Trump a Nazi and fascist, but Trump called Harris a communist and Marxist. Trump's vitriol seemed to resonate, but Harris' didn't. Why?
Question: women's right to their own bodies is great. However, why does that right stop when it comes to illicit drugs? Either you own your own body or you don't. It's not a principle that you can cherrypick from. It's disingenuos.
And trump is a whole strong person. Another commenter for whom trump can be lawless but harris has to be flawless. Could this woman BE more self contradictory?
There are a few things I found problematic. Calling Harris a DEI hire for one. And wanting to pivot to identity several times, even when the host raised the economy as the top voter issue.
Trump and his group (Vance, Vivek, Gabard, RFK jr,etc) simply outworked the Harris campaign. They were in front of people everywhere, even supposed skeptics. Kamala had very few public appearances, and very little interaction with skeptical press. Her campaign “team” seemed to be mainstream media, which is drawing less and less viewers. Plus, I think voters were getting tired of the Democrats continual dehumanizing of Trump voters, linking them with Hitler, nazis, and garbage.
Certainly not. But the DNC (not entirely unreasonably) decided that they should quickly agree on one candidate, and it would be difficult to pick anyone else than the current VP. Immediately after Biden's decision to withdraw from the race, people were generally impressed by the unanimity with which the Democrats expressed support for Harris. What should never have happened is Biden's decision to run for re-election. Without him running, there would have been a regular Democratic primary process. (Also, they should never have gone after Trump. It just brought Trump back into the limelight. He was nearly forgotten at the time.)

I’m not sure Harris would have been that predictable. She’d be insecure enough to try a random show of strength to prove her credentials, especially in foreign affairs. There are very hawkish people around her who would egg her on and she hasn’t the experience to challenge them.

electing a criminal who has stated he wishes to "terminate" the Constitution, who attempted a coup... throw out the Nation with the bathwater, is that it?

excellent & well expressed analysis & comments, voices such as Lionel Shriver are sorely needed in this debate 👏
One of the best interviews I've seen about the election, well done Spectator
'[Government] inefficacy is a protection for the rest of us.'
As cynical as that sounds, I have to admit that it's true of many Western governments at present. I know we think we want government to be efficient and effective but that presumes that it's obeying our wishes rather than acting in its own interests and at the behest of those who are powerful enough to influence it.
I didn't know Lionel Shriver until this week. I have to say, she's got some gonads. Good for her.
She has a fierce intellect and is fearless in speaking her mind.
She’s awesome. Even if you disagree with her view point, she’s direct, clear, articulate and funny.
Love Lionel just disappointed that she had to wait until DJT had won until she expressed joy

2016 should have been a wake up call for the dems, but they doubled down with identity politics. Why would 2024 be any different? Now though, people are bone-deep sick of it, particularly men who are really only beginning to awaken as a political group. There will be a wailing and a gnashing of teeth.
Well, it sort of worked in 2020; Biden ran on a message of only "I'm not the racist, sexist Donald Trump." That message is now worn out, per Aesop's Fables.
Not surprisingly given the source, the best commentary on the election I've heard so far.
A party who thought they could call half - or more - of the country 'garbage' and win the election ... lost?! I'm shocked.
In 2028 they will vote for Tulsi. Female and First Nations native, not because of that though, but because of MERIT.
Who?
Totally agree, she will be the first female pres
Another type of DEI is not acceptable….She will have to prove herself with merit only. And I think she will agree with same.
Or Vance, or DeSantis…good options, the Dems, not so much.
Nope
I'm an enthusiastic Trump supporter, but I'm still apprehensive for the inevitable nonstop sh*tshow that will be the next four years
the media needs to keep it going for clicks. It is a symbiotic relationship.
Make no mistake, if Harris had won, it would actually have been Obama’s 4th term…. But I suspect even he thought she was useless and could have been a loose cannon if allowed to let rip with her true inner far- left ideals a la AOC ..😮
Keir Starmer should take note....... I am just conservative, not a right wing extremist.

Re: abortions There is a group within the Democrat Party who believe that a woman’s right to choose an abortion should be right up to the moment of birth, not as Ms Shriver states abortion until the fetus is viable. This is not where most Americans from both parties are.
5795 Well stated !
@@prof.jezebeli don’t understand your last sentence.
And is it your position that Democrats are in favor of restrictions on abortion?
They were already off the rails without applying the brakes!!!!!
Thank you my Black and Latino brothers! Good decision. No men in girls sports!

Very good analysis of Harris. Why weren't we seeing this type of stuff before the election?
People were scared under Democrats divisive identity policies. Not an American but seems like Democrats set race relations back a century. Hope Americans can heal now .
Kamala Harris is the Democrats version of Sarah Palin
"Harris would be safer for the country." Is Lionel Schriver bonkers?
no, that´s why she said that
Yeah that was a curious statement from such an intellectual person
@hsmd4533 Listen to the entire statement in its context.
Harris’s lack of policy disclosure makes her as much of an uncertain candidate as Trump
we are all Puerto Rican today!
that made me laugh...my wife doesn't know yet.
because we are all Trump voters today? 🤣
Why?
Everyone had enough of Democrats ,drug addicts on the streets men in women’s sports and change rooms, charity funds disappearing into foundations etc
Good question!
Because she was the defender of a system people want to burn down. He is the guy holding the matches.
Because his accusations are true and hers is not! Simple. And we have four years of DT to prove that her words were just lies.

Another commenter for whom trump can be lawless but harris has to be flawless.
Could this woman BE more self contradictory?
No one ever demanded Kamala for to be flawless, only not to be worthless. And she failed.
Lionel’s analysis is contradictory at times. Her initial comments that she thought Harris was safer is directly contradicted by her critique.
Didn’t want this interview to end.
Amen! After the DNC installed her, I kept asking, “Is she the best that the DNC can come up with?” Sad!
What hasn't been spoken about here is the tremendous opportunity to improve the health of Americans through the efforts of RFK
