This is the only video that describes a scraping noise and shows the actual sound of a scraping noise. All the rest say scraping but show clunking! great video!
Thanks Stan, I appreciate the feedback 🍻Cheers
@@EddieCarrara1 i highly suggest bro, u get closer to the mic and speaker louder all that background noise ehhh its drowning out what ur saying.

Just got the backing plate taken off my jeep because of the scraping I was half rotted off. Do you need to actually have one put on our can you go without it?
Thank you sooooo much! And thanks to the person who mentioned a small rock can cause the same sound. Living in a gravel road, the odds were good and sure enough I saw a small rock at the bottom of the plate. Pushed it back with a screwdriver and the culprit of the noise, a small rock, fell out. Problem solved. Thanks for saving me a trip the mechanic and $$$.
Hi Anna, great story, thanks for taking the time to share :)
Hi, same exact thing happened to me! I live up a gravel driveway and got freaked out when I heard a super dramatic scraping sound all of a sudden. I found this video and pressed on the flexible backing plate and a small pebble fell out. Very helpful video, got me on the right track to be able to fix the noise by myself and probably saved me a couple hundred bucks!
Your video is the only one I found that shows what's making the noise and ur not talking over it. Thank you. Wish they were all like this
Hi Anita, thank you, I try to get to the point quickly, I don't like to watch videos that have a lot of blah blah blah and I don't want to make them lol.
@@EddieCarrara1 much appreciated
Thanks very much, dude!
Used your vid to fix my friend's stolen truck. The crooks left his '06 Silverado 1500 laying on concrete with the front left wheel removed. The weight of the truck crushed the bottom of the splash guard inward over half an inch, causing the guard to grind against the back of his brake rotor when driving around.
Bent the splash guard back aways and finally got it just right. Now all my friend needs is balance and alignment of his new wheels/tires 👍👍
You're welcome, Why can't people just get a job and buy what they want lol? WTF!!!
Thank you so much for not sugarcoating, or beating around the bush, you provided help and I appreciate it.
Hi Genericsoul, I try to be concise so I'm glad you appreciate it, some people need more Blah Blah Blah lol 🤣

Ty for this vid it is a money saver. A tiny rock and it sounds like your dragging a 12 foot piece of tin roofing behind the car.
You're welcome Zofoblues, thank you for the feedback :)
Thats what mine sounds like right now. My husband going to drive it home for me later because It was so bad with the noise I pulled over and walked home. But how you described it is exactly how it sounds.
Exactly mine is terrible
Shit I just had this sound. I know NOTHING about cars and this freaked me out. I'm driving a work car so super stressed.
It's due for a service anyway so it'll be fine, but it sounds legit like the whole car is broken/there's a major fault with it. But it's all localised in the front right wheel and it;s that same scraping noise.
I've had dirt in the wheels/rotors before but it didn't sound so bad. This time is sounds REALLY bad.
Hey how did you get the rock out?
I've had this annoying scraping sound for over a year in my car. Drove me nuts. I spent two seconds searching, found this video, and did as you advised, and no more scraping. One free Internet Beer for you good sir! Thanks!
Hi Michael, that's awesome! I drink Dogfish Head lol.
Was the sound during highway or braking?
@@Primer9 pretty much always. When braking, it actually quieted down.
Wowwww this is an answer to my nightmare of almost going insane with the noise. After replacing 4 tires I thought those guys caused the noise and parked my BMW for months while pissed at everyone. Thanks so much for this video.
Hey T Stewart, yeah, sometimes when mechanics pull off the wheels they drop down on the backing plate or rub the backing plate and distort it causing it to touch the rotor and a cause a scraping noise. Just use a long screwdriver, broom handle or something to push the backing plate away from the rotor, you don't need to move it much and they are not fragile lol. let me know if you have any questions 🍻
Thanks for the video. I decided to check the back plate before I took it to the mechanic and sure nuff you saved me time and money!!! I appreciate you
Yes Yes Yes! I love a happy ending 😁 I appreciate your feedback 🍺
Thank you for this. I had this start a couple of days ago. Sounds like I'm dragging some debris in the wheel area. I was going to check tie rod ends. Now this is definitely my 1st check. That's the exact sound. Subscribed!
Awesome VLNS, If you don't find that the backing plate is touching the rotor, the brake pads maybe worn and need replacing, so that would be check #2 👍

Dude. Thank you. You just saved me a trip to the garage. I must have banged it when switching out the control arm.
This was really helpful, thank you! I was going crazy as my car made exactly like this sound only every now and then when doing a slow turn or bump on a gravel road and sound stopped eventually.

I never had this noise until today when the mechanic changed rear pads and rotors. Horrible scraping noise. We pulled it all out and inspected and found no signs of the backing plate scraping at all. But found the pad and rotors are already grooved deeply and its only been a few miles. The noise is worse during a turn and its still made when the tire turns and the brakes NOT being depressed. Almost like the wheel is doing it and not the rotors/backing plate.
Thank you thank you thank you. Im going down the road and thinking I tore up my locking hubs. I mean it was damn loud, people were actually looking over at me. Frickin dust cover or whatever it is rubbing the rotors. No clue how it happened but it was bent in.Solved!
That's awesome M Dutchy, You're welcome! Snow and ice are a common cause, like driving through a snowbank (if you live in a snowy area). Thanks for the comment, most people don't think the fix as that easy lol.
Thanx..that makes sence..i jus bought a 2016 honda accord..and as soon as i drove off..after buying the car..noticed this type noise..didnt hear it on the test drive..but..thats my fault...and we had to drive 159 miles home like this..hope it didn't ruin the rotor..driving that far..gonna look at here in a bit..thanx!
10/10 video. Could not figure out what the noise was.
Hi Josh, what is your question?
Informative! Saved me a couples hundred bucks
Love it!
I had this noise on a 02 jetta. It turned out to be a rock . The rock was inside the hollow part of the roter and when I drove it was rubbing on the shield. Small rock huge noise, glad I looked before I went to a shop. I almost missed it though. At slow speed it was quite but at. 15mph and up ,noise. So spin the shit out of it to tell
Thanks for sharing Zofoblues :)
Hey how did you get the rock out?
I have squealing and scraping noise while driving forward. Just had brakes changed two weeks ago with new caliper.
Most likely when they did your brakes, they bent the backing plate and it’s too close to the rotor, causing a scraping or squealing noise. Find out which wheel it’s going from and make an adjustment on the plate behind the rotor. You can use a long screwdriver and push on it just to move it away from the rotor a little, it doesn’t take much force to move this plate.
Fixed my scraping brake noise thank you.
Awesome Ricardo! Thanks for the feedback 👍
How did u do it ? Just replace the part ? My trail blazer is making the same noise and im so upset!!!!!
@@EddieCarrara1 no. I took all that off with the grinder and pliers. To see if it’ll fix the problem and it did fixed it no more noise
@@shellypayne9381 Usually you can bend the rotor backing plate away from the rotor. Sometimes you need to remove the wheel and caliper to remove debris stuck between the rotor and backing plate, so It all depends on what is actually causing the noise. Let me know if you have any other questions Shelly 😊
@@ricardogomez2237 Awesome! Sometimes just removing the big flakes of rust on the rotor will do the trick. Thanks for the update Ricardo 👍
Wow this is one of the noises my 2006 Chevy trailblazer LS makes but only when the steering wheel ever so slightly goes to the right, it's really loud if I'm turning into a gas station or drive through. I know I need new breaks and rotors. I was told I don't have dust shields/pans or whatever they're called. My truck makes no noises when I press on the brakes, it's so weird. The noise is wayy more consistent and loud just within the last few days 😭 the truck was my moms, she took EXCELLENT care of every vehicle she ever had. She passed away from ovarian cancer in September of 2017, she didn't have much or a will or anything like that, my older sister got power of attorney and let the truck just sit for well over a year. WORST thing you could ever do to a vehicle 😠 I've replaced the power steering return hose, the power steering line, power steering pump, my check engine light is on and was flashing until I had it read and it said something about a cylinder misfiring, so all 6 of the coil/cool pack things need to be replaced. I replaced the 1 that was coming up on the reader along with replacing all the spark plugs, after I did that it stopped ideling and ran a whole lot better but it wasn't even 48hrs until the check engine light popped right back on 😑 the guy that put the 1 new coil and spark plugs in said my check engine light will stay on until I get the rest replaced. I had someone else try and listen to hear the noise and bc he's gotten older his hearing isn't what it used to be and couldn't hear it. He said I definitely need all new control arms, brakes and rotors all the way around 😭
Hi Trina, Sorry about your mom, it's difficult to lose someone so close☹️
It sounds like you have a lot of rust build up on the rotors from sitting and it may be the cause of your noise. I recommend you replace the brakes first and then get a second opinion on the control arms, it's very unusual for all control arms needing replacement.
I also recommend having the check engine light code pulled again because, again, it's unlikely all the coils need replacing so make sure you double-check this issue before you spend the money. Let me know if I can answer any other questions for you, and keep me posted on what happens, thanks 😊
This just might be the cause of my scraping noise, I need to check this. Took a bad hit crossing some railroad tracks. My car is doing the same thing
Thanks for posting. Sounds so much like my wife's 2006 accord. I know the pads and rotors are good b/c I replaced them only 13k miles ago. I will check it out in the next hour.
OK Millrat, let me know how you make out or if you have questions 👍
Eddie Carrara my Honda Civic type r is doing it so how exactly am I supposed to fix it? Do I get like a flat head and push it bacc out or ?
@@louicruz2611 Yes, that is what I did. You will want to use something long and narrow in case you may have a rock stuck in between the plate and the back side of the rotor.
@@EddieCarrara1 Yes, it worked perfectly. The car rolls quietly as it should. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.
@@millrat69 You're welcome, thank you for coming back with an update 👍
Awesome!! I’m pretty sure that this is exactly what I’m hearing.. only happens once in awhile.. but it’s that scraping noise.. and I know that that back piece is old rotted and rusted too all hell.. can I just bend it out of the way a little if it looks like the rusted small piece is hanging which is what’s probably making it make this noise.. when my rotors breaks were changed about 6 months ago I remember seeing it all types of falling off & rusty..& kinda bent.. so this is my guess.. would suck too have too pay someone too just bend it a bit..
Hi Amanda, Yeah you can bend it yourself, use a screwdriver or broom handle or whatever you can fit in there and bend it just a little, don't go crazy lol. The plate covers the back of the rotor except for where the caliper is mounted so go all around the rotor edge and start bending to see if the noise subsides. Keep me posted.
Had this occur after my tire rotation thought it was brakes but it continued to rub after braking for a bit while driving , sounded like driving threw crunchy snow ‘ but it was a bent flap from when they replace tire I guess it happens when tire is out on a bit to forceful . At least it wasn’t major . Guy fixed it in a few minutes no charge .
Yes, it very common Dianne, if the mechanic road tests the car after their repair they will usually catch the problem before returning it to the customer, unfortunately you were the lucky one. Thanks for sharing your story, it just goes to show that this stuff really does happen in the real world lol. 😊
Thanks this helped me alot, to understand my situation was same
THAT'S IT! That's the noise I was hearing!
Maybe Potrimpo lol.
Since disc brake rotors are self cleaning, is a dust shield really necessary? Especially on an older high mileage car?
Hi Andrew, the dust shield is to keep water and debris from splashing up on the brakes, and yes, your vehicle can be driven without them if they rust off lol.
mine just started doing this was a build of of brake dust , have to take caliper off and clean dust cover
Hi Stars, Rust buildup is very common, it's usually found under the dust.
Yes, excellent video.

I have a scrapping issue on my back tires. The problem is that my Toyota only has front brake pads. Not back ones. Any answers would be helpful
I have a similar issue. Did you end up finding out what it was?
My car has the same scraping noise. Thought it might be brakes but it still there when brakes not applied. It was there the other evening but in the morning it was gone. Came back yesterday evening again. Still there this morning.
It definitely could be your brake pad wear indicator. Heat will cause the noise to come and go when it's the wear indicator on the brake pad.
Simple and great video. Thank you
You're welcome Dave 🍺
I hope i have exactly that.
Because when i start to drive or roll.
A "tssk tssk tssk" can be heard from the back and it gets faster the faster i drive.
Hi Dgisch, either you bent the backing plate or it's a rock lol.
All well and good, but it looks like part of the suspension arm is stopping the shield from being bent back for clearance ?
Hi Manofweed1, you only need about 1/4'' of clearance between the rotor and backing plate, keep in mind that the rotor and wheel bearing have some flex, that's why you need the clearance.
you are a legend Eddie sir, thanks a ton for the video, is it ok to bend it a bit outwards to stop the grinding noise
You're welcome James, yes, absolutely, it's amazing how little you have to bend the plate to stop the noise. If there is a small rock or pebble stuck in there, some times you need to remove the caliper, but usually they fall out when bending the plate. Let me know if I can answer any questions for you. Cheers🍺
Hey Eddie, I get the exact same noise when I'm going slow (15-30km/h), but the noise isnt there when I drive fast, does it mean I have to change my brake pads or something is stuck in there?
Anugrah Aneesh mines as well?
Taylor Edmond I just got it fixed today, I had to replace the brake pads because it was completely worn out so it was rubbing against the disc creating the scrappy noise, I also had to skim the disc and lube it as the worn out brake pads scratched them too hard
@@MsAnu619, good thing you checked them when you did, least you didn't have to replace the rotors yet and saved a few bucks.
Eddie Carrara exactly, but after two days of fixing it, I have been hearing another noise from the same side, its more like a squeaky noise, do you think its the rotor? Do I have to change it?
what causes the backing plate to move into a position whrere it could scrape the brakes?
The danm dude don’t answer nobody’s questions and he don’t even really tell you how to fix it he says just bent it back with a screw driver
This happens when you forget the E brake when changing tires and the car falls off the jack without the tire on.
@@KoolAid42OLoud xD
Debris, rocks, salt or whatever else may be on the road can knock it.
Thanks. I have such noise after changing break pads, disc and caliber. IF shield could be an issue like you explained then why it comes randomly only for some time then stops ( Eg if I drive it starts after 5-10 km then for 2 mins only and then stops). If it is bent shield then it should be continuous, right ?
Thanks for the help
You're welcome Hulk, let me know if I can answer any questions for you.
Just watched your video I have 2010 Honda Accord. Just started this noise today, my Backing is definitely bent on my rotor. Hoping I can bend it back myself. It sounds terrible!! I just washed my car yesterday, I am thinking dirt or a big rock somehow got up in under there and caused it to bend. The break pads look good and my rotors look decent. It's got 77,000 miles on it.
I wish I could add my pictures of it for you to see..
Hi Crystal, Use a long screwdriver or even a butter knife to push on the backing plate through the wheel. Let me know how you make out 😊
@@EddieCarrara1ok...this might be a dumb question...but should I be using the blunt side of the screwdriver to bend the plate? Or the metal part of the screwdriver? I'm trying to do it without taking off the wheel. Thanks!
@@HawaiiGaymer There is no such thing as a dumb question LOL. You can use the blade side or anything really to push on the backing plate, it just needs a minor adjustment and sometimes you'll need to go around the rotor edge and make adjustments in different spots.
@@EddieCarrara1 thank you!! I just used my hands after reading your reply. The sound is gone! I noticed I was able to bend it more with my hand than with the screwdriver. Thank you so much for helping out newbies like me! Awesome how your video is years old and still helping every day! Thanks man!!

I need help! I have an 02 Toyota corolla never was making any nose while driving its making a screeching noise like if u were dragging a piece of metal I hear it on the front wheel passenger side there's times is soft and times it gets loud a d I feel like something is falling off my car
Hi Amanda, sorry for the late reply, did you fix the noise? It could be the backing plate touching the rotor, something stuck between the rotor and backing plate, or your brake pads are worn out and the wear indicator is warning you to change them asap.
Ok so that sounds simple enough but I'm a huge dummy. Could you show us how you fixed the issue (bent it back) did you take parts off or not or if so did you also take off the backing plate and bent it by hand or beat it with a hammer?
Hi Jessie, The plate is easy to bend with your hand or screwdriver. Some are so rusted you have to take them off. Be sure to go all the way around the rotor to check clearance.
My car came back from the garage making a scraping sound after new disc. I hope this is the reason. Can’t wait to check tomorrow in the daylight.
How'd you make out Slumbass?
@@EddieCarrara1 it was the case,I didn’t sort it myself though. I don’t have the space or tools really. dropped the car at the garage and walked my dog while they sorted it out. They happily did so.
got a 2011 toyota highlander. The plate has rusted and fallen and has started making this noise. Is it safe to drive to work for another day if I just rip it off? already have replacement ordered.
The dust shield, does a few things, it directs air on to the rotor to help cool it, it deflects water and debris from getting on the rotor, if it's removed it will have very little effect.
It worked, thank you!
Awesome VC Cheers 🍺
Think I got this on my 14 v6 mustang
Had a shop do a full brake job about 2 weeks ago and after a day of a lot of driving and bumpy roads I notice a quiet scraping noise when going slow. Especially turning left and only coming from the front left tire. Thinking(hoping) this is the problem. Gotta check tomorrow
Keep me posted of what you find Ox.
@@EddieCarrara1 hey there, it actually was the backing plate. I just bent it the slightest bit away from the rotor and all scratching is gone. Back to being a silent v6 :D
I’m actually having this issue on my left rear tire when breaking. It’s literally making that exactly sound. I’m assuming it’s a sign to get the rotors changed? Or something else?
Have the same noise on my 02 4×4 Tahoe took to shop they said the noise was from the parking break had that done and it still making same noise when your driving but goes away when you apply on the break but gets louder when your turning then within afew second of straighten up it goes away then comes back but only making the noise from the back driver tire which is making me not happy spending 231$ for something that didn't fix the issue. This is happening on the back driver side
Hi Chris,
If I spent that much money on a repair and it wasn't fixed, you bet your ass I would bring it back so that can actually fix it at no charge. It sounds to me like the rotor backing plate is touching something, so either there is debris stuck between the rotor and backing plate the backing plate is bent and touching the rotor or it is possible the brake pad wear indicator is touching the rotor, but I hope your mechanic would have checked the brake pad thickness when they were in there. Keep me posted on what you find, thanks.
@@EddieCarrara1 I thought so too just with my job working budweiser warehouse I don't have time to do anything and on wkend I have off and shops are not open long enough and it's getting colder but yeah I'll keep in touch
Thankyou brother for the video.
You're welcome Long Haul, thank you for the feedback 🍻
What would have caused the bent metal that's contacting and making the scraping sound?
Hi Lightcode, rust, human , debris like snow or objects, etc.
The round metal plate behind my brake pads always gets rusted and I e changed my brake pads so many times in one year. I’m trying to learn how to fix my car. All mechanics say is the brake pad but the metal plate keeps rusting quickly and the squeaking continues I’m desperate
It is possible to replace the backing plate, its a little work but possible 😁
Question I have this problem, also the rear ones are rusty and breaking in small peaces, can you remove them, will arm the vehicle driving or breaking capabilities? Thank you
Hi Pablo, if you need to chip the heavy flakes off the edge it ok, just don't remove any of the barking surface where the brake pad contact surface is.
Mine sounds like this on the back wheel, but only when I slow down, never at high speed. Could this be the problem still?
Yes, sometimes when your driving at highway speeds the noise will diminish because road noise will drown it out.
Same
Thank you so much. This was the problem!
That's awesome itoohavedreams, thanks for taking the time to leave feedback 👍
I'm just saying thank you cause everyone else saying thank you. 😊
You're welcome Bles, because I tell everyone You're welcome 😂
I bought a 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee it started out as a whining noise an the faster I was going the louder it got then it turn into this rubbing metal on metal sound an now it’s grinding but it’s a very intense grind an it starts as soon as the tires start turning it’s my front left tire. That’s where the noise is coming from. Part of me thinks is the wheel bearing an the other part of me thinks it’s my break pads and shoes but I’m not sure. I’m not a mechanic.
Courtney, I hope you had your brakes checked by now. A wheel bearing will start making noise around 20 mph, if you hear a noise as soon as the wheel starts moving, most likely the brakes are the issue. let me know what you found, thanks.
Thanks!!! Exactly my issue. Easy fix.
Awesome Pokemonkidz 🍻Thanks for the feedback 👍
Will it shave it and eventually stop making the noise if not fixed or is it necessary to take the wheel off and bend the sides causing the scrape ?
Not necessary to take off the wheel, just use a screwdriver through the holes in your rims and push it back a little, it doesn't need much tweaking.
I think this happened when I changed out my struts today on my Ford focus.
Yes sir Steven, it's very possible, just push on the plate with a long screwdriver or broom handle to move the plate away from the rotor. Keep me posted.
You’re a saint
Thanks Toni 😇
hi eddie ive got a problem with my prado ive jsut bought the owner assures me he has never heard it before and could be a simple as a stone in the disc brake.. Can you help me out ?
Hi Michael, yes it could be a small stone between the rotor and backing plate or it could be the brake pad wear indicator warning you the pads are getting low. I recommend you have a mechanic check the inner and outer brake pads at all 4 calipers. Let me know if this helps.
Any way you can show us how to bend that metal shield away from rotor with screwdriver? Thanks.
Hi Mikey, Check out my other video on how to bend the backing plate away from the rotor. Don't worry, you can't hurt the backing plate by bending it. ruclips.net/video/HR8UbHpBfmU/видео.html
What if its the same sound but the shield isn't rubbing anywhere on all four tires? I've had this problem for a few weeks now after I went mudding and I can't find the problem anywhere. I even checked the engine bay.
Hi Holley, some times debris can get between the rotor and backing plate and you are not able to see it. I recommend you identify where the noise is coming from, pull the wheel, remove the caliper and inspect the area between the rotor and backing plate for any debris or scrape marks on ant of the components, also turn the rotor while the wheel is off to duplicate the noise. Let me know if this helps, thanks.
Would a scraping noise caused by this go away when braking? Would you expect it to come and go a bit?
That noise is most likely the brake pad wear indicator. I recommend you check the brake pad thickness at the wheel you hear the noise, especially the inner pad because that's where the set indicator is located.
Is the noise just a nuisance or is it a safety issue? I would just leave it if it's not unsafe. Its definitely the same sound on my dodge.
It’s not always the backing plate, sometimes it’s a sign of low brake material so it’s a good idea to have your brakes checked.
Let me ask you what If they are drum brakes on one tire could it he the same as whet your describing 😊l
Absolutely CCQ, the drum brake has a backing plate as well and the clearances are even tighter.
Thanks!!
You're welcome Lit Tyler.
I am hearing this sound (just started a few days ago) coming from my rear passenger side wheel. Only, it is not constant. It comes and goes and doesn't matter if i am driving fast or slow or even turning. Any idea what this might be? Thank you for your help!
I recommend you check your brakes, the inner pad may be worn to the point that the wear indicator is starting to touch the rotor intermittently. Let me know what you find, thanks.
