I was having this issue with my kid's car. My daughter told me she was hearing scrapping noises coming from the left front wheel. I pulled the wheel off and inspected the calibers and rotor. Everything looked ok. When I looked at the shield, it was obvious that it was making contact with the rotor. I bent the shield away from the rotor. I was relieved that it was an easy fix at no cost.

Hi jumping on here because my son was having issues with his camry and I started having this issue with my Jeep. You guys have saved my son and I $$$ in repairs. I buy from you guys because of this. Would it be easier to shop via Amazon? Sure, but I don't trust chinese steel and questionable parts. I know shopping with you guys I'll get what I need 1st time, right every time thusfar. Thanks for this video and all your tips. I've replaced door handles, a rear suspension to include subframe, exterior and interior lights thanks to your short tutorials. Keep up the great service and work!
After changing the cv axle with no results, I figured out that it was a corroded rotor rubbing against the dustplate and metallic tips of the brake paid retainers.....I've been doing my own suspension repairs for decades and never before has this happened (perhaps because I usually change rotors when I change brake pads)! This video is a good tip that I haven't seen anywhere else! This tip should be mentioned in all of those other videos dealing with bad bearings and cv joints. My issue started on a 2015 nissan versa with 42K as a very slight clicking noise that was worse when i turned the car to a particular side. Same symptom as a bad cv axle. Within a few weeks it morphed into a loud scraping sound, especially on turns.
This is EXACTLY the same sound I am hearing right now on my 2012 Nissan. Front driver side wheel, only makes this sound when I turn right. Wow, I'll take a look at this tomorrow. If it is as simple as this, I will be a very happy man! Thanks for the video.
Mine was doing this scraping after having new brake discs and pads, so I have just ripped off the dust guard. Will have to buy a replacement but at least I can drive now without causing any more damage 😊
My wife didn’t drive her Forester for a week.. immediately had this same sound from both front wheels. Brakes had just been checked 2 weeks ago and were fine. Couldn’t figure out where the problem was. I watched this video then went out and fixed this exact issue in 5 minutes. Didn’t even have to remove the wheel.. I was able to see the shield touching the rotor through the wheel spoke. Thanks for the great video!
Hi ! I believe that your video actually solved my problem, I hit a curb sideways yesterday and above 60mph I can hear some noise around front wheel, not sure which side, but I believe your video solved my problem, will check tomorrow morning! thanks !
Also check to see if your lug nuts are on firmly. That happened to me once. Back wheel was making a grinding sound. Went to check for debris or hindrances and found the lug nuts were coming loose. Wow... and lucky it made noise.
Another reason for this type of noise is that upon getting new tires, sometimes the weights used on the inside of the tire rim used to balance the tire can rub against the brake parts. This just happened to me on my Honda CR-V. The weights were rubbing up against the brake pad retainers and causing a horrible scraping noise.
Just had this problem and the clips that hold the pads were slightly over sized so we ground them down but not enough on the passenger side so the clips on the outer side were rubbing on the rotor causing a squealing or high pitch noise. So make sure to check the clips that hold the break pads.
Thanks so much!!! I have an issue with my 2018 Honda Accord LX. First thing in the morning I went to push back my dust shield behind the rotor, I heard something drop 🤔 started my car drove it for while below 5/10 mph and the sound is gone, it's was rock 🙏🏽
Fantastic video.... I’ve got the same problem on 2011 Hyundai i10 (UK) a lack of use issue and a lack of service / cleaning of these parts. Big thumbs up.
Thank you for saving me hundreds of dollars (and time dealing with a repair shop)! I was able to fix it without even removing the wheel! I just took a flashlight and a long screwdriver and pushed back the shield a little through the wheel. No idea why this has downvotes, it's a good suggestion.
In some cases, Because the dust shield is made of aluminum, over time the bolts will eat through the aluminum causes the dust shield to dangle. Regardless of how you bend it it will still scrape. In this scenario you will need a new dust shield
Great video .I have a 02 toyota camry le 2..4 4cylinder scraping noise on my front passeger tire...what makes the shield get close to the rotor?I'm a Diy 😊
Thanks very much---this was very helpful, saved me a trip to the brake shop as well as whatever they would have charged me. When I do need new parts I'll check with you first since you took the time to make the video and earn the business. Thanks again
I had a similar issue and for the life of me I couldn't find the culprit. But then it dawned on me, I recently replaced the front drive shafts (half-shafts) which required removal and replacement of the front rotors. It was done at a local shop and I began to think what if they didn't fully clean and sand away rust build up that happens between the rotor and hub? Replacing the rotors with rust build-up (even a little) can cause the rotor to wobble enough to score just enough against the pads as it rotates. Sure enough I took the rotors off, sanded everything down smooth and replaced the rotors (which now rested flat against the hub) and no more noise. So if your rotors were taken off and replaced, check to see if this necessary step was done.
Was having the same issue on my Forester; a slight metallic tick tick sound from a front wheel that changed pitch based on how fast the wheel was rotating. With the rims I have I didn't even need to take wheel off, just stuck my finger between spokes and pushed the top of the shield back a tiny bit. Took all of 10 seconds.
*Update - I cannot thank you enough. This was indeed the problem! That thin metal shield at 0:54 was slightly bend in as I looked from bottom to top (even just touching it with the screwdriver mimiced the same noise I was hearing) Just pried it out a bit, knocked some corrosion off it also, few shots of compressed air. The God awful annoying sound when I turn right is finally gone! Thanks so much, I was fearing this was some major issue.

Thank you for sharing this info with your viewers. That scraping sound is a lil like how my rear brakes sound on the right. Part of me was thinking they were gritty from dust that blows about in our cul-de-sac complex, and the accumulation was causing a build-up, and then a part of me thought the pads were scraping, which they probably are. The sound isn't a continuous one, but is more sporadic as though there was a few spots rubbing and also when I use the brakes. I sprayed both rotors on the outer edge with WD-40 and they got a lil bit quieter, but they do make some noise. Will have to get them checked out soon, but at least I don't drive my van much.
Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful to me. I bent the guard against the disc while replacing the brake pads and it was making this loud grinding noise afterwards.
I pulled a fallen tree that was too much load. Front brakes on the side of the hook made a grinding noise. I replaced the brake calipers, and still a problem. I replaced the brake hoses and still a problem and a louder grinding sound. Finally I replaced the wheel bearing assembly and this was the cure. I must have broken the wheel bearing, bearing retaner. Also the ABS light went completely off from going on and off.
Thanks alot for the video..I'm pretty sure this is what's going on on my 2002 dodge ram 1500 its making the same noise and it comes and goes im gonna check it out first thing tommorow morning
My car is doing it but from the back.. and has drums rather than disk brakes. But makes exactly same noise. I inspected the front and back brakes and everything seems to be fine but now that I saw this helpful video hopefully I can locate the issue.. Anybody with rear drum brakes issues like this? Please advice. Thank you
This is the exact noise my town and country has been making. It only happened after changing my brake pads, calipers, and rotors. I assumed it was because I changed my brake pads and left them on my old rotors. The noise started after driving about 100 miles after servicing, I then changed the rotors and it continued making that noise.

I have a question. I hear bad scraping from my rear 2WD Highlander. I just replaced the hub bearing and dust shield. Could a bad strut make the rotor hit the dust shield? At higher speeds I do NOT hear this as much. there is a little play in the strut shaft if I yank on it. I want to buy all new struts if this is the problem. It seems to be only coming from the passenger side
Something im going to check in morning. No other video mentioned dust shield.✊👍 My pads are good and rotor brand new. If the dust shield doesn't fix the problem.... Could it be the caliper & or mounting bracket??🙏
+Fish Life & Knives We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
If i have similar rust on the edge of my rotor that is contacting the splash/dust guard and causing audible noise when driving, does it cause any damage to the rotor or brakes ?
Thanks 1AAuto. I have a scraping noise much like this, but mostly when backing up and when I push the brake pedal down after backing up. I just had the brake pads replaced about 1 week ago. Does it sound like the same thing? Thanks
I'm trying this, it happens intermittently and it looks closer than the other dust sheild. I was also racing against the rain when I finished the brake job and the wheel slipped sprained my thumb and rolled around under the rotor. I also added extra lube and did a light sand on what appeared to be glazing, an i think that's what was causing squeaking on the other side. Hopefully all the noise is cleared up
Can the dust cover be adjusted without taking the wheel off? I get this rhythmic scraping sound when I do a sharp left turn, it is not constant only at a certain point of the wheel turning. Kind of like ch...ch... ch...ch
I have the same rhythmic ch...ch...ch..ch, like you described. I don't know what car you have, but I was able to bend away the shield without taking the wheels off on my car. Turn the wheels all the way one way to try and reach in behind for one wheel. Then do the other by turning the wheels in the opposite direction.
Change my brakes because of squealing noise, it's still squealing but only after not driving for a while for example during the morning or after work shift should I replace my rotor
I need help I have a 2014 chevey impala limited ls I changed my cv axles and my struts and my car makes a scraping grinding noise that is coming from only the drivers side tire area I just don’t know anymore I can’t think of anything g else that would make that noise other than a bad roter r a bad bushing. Please send me some ideas of what to look at to check😂
So he mentioned it makes the noise while turning left. I have a similar noise with slight rights like changing lanes. 2 seperate mechanic shops could not replicate the noise and told me my pads are good... Also, apparently my vehicle is structurally sound (their words) and I have nothing to worry about mechanically. Its more annoying then anything to be honest but I also want to ensure the safety of me and my family. Any suggestions?

Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful to me. I bent the guard against the disc while replacing the brake pads and it was making this loud grinding noise afterwards.

What a legend saved me so much time and money
I pulled a fallen tree that was too much load. Front brakes on the side of the hook made a grinding noise. I replaced the brake calipers, and still a problem. I replaced the brake hoses and still a problem and a louder grinding sound. Finally I replaced the wheel bearing assembly and this was the cure. I must have broken the wheel bearing, bearing retaner.
Also the ABS light went completely off from going on and off.
Own 1996 Crown Lx. All 4 wheels are dragging very lightly enought to generate heat and notice drag. What direction should i start looking
I got new pads and rotors from you guys it’s been a week and they are grinding
I hope you showing more stuff for trucks, I drive a chevy Silverado New style body style and I learned a lotta stuff of how I do my own repairs 👍
My dust shield wasnt rubbing but I cleaned as much rust as I could from inner and outer rotor edges and noise went down considerably.
Thanks alot for the video..I'm pretty sure this is what's going on on my 2002 dodge ram 1500 its making the same noise and it comes and goes im gonna check it out first thing tommorow morning
What if I think the noise is coming from the back wheel ? Is that common? Or is this only a front wheel issue?
Can slight contact between the shield and the rotors make the rotors warp?
My car is doing it but from the back.. and has drums rather than disk brakes.
But makes exactly same noise.
I inspected the front and back brakes and everything seems to be fine but now that I saw this helpful video hopefully I can locate the issue..
Anybody with rear drum brakes issues like this? Please advice.
Thank you
Thank you so much. Very informative. Straight to the point. It helped me a lot.
A diagnosis is a helper. My Camry had two unbolted lug nuts. When I would turn the rim would scrape on the nuts.
Thanks so much! fixed my 2008 Jeep Patriot in minutes!

This is the exact noise my town and country has been making. It only happened after changing my brake pads, calipers, and rotors. I assumed it was because I changed my brake pads and left them on my old rotors. The noise started after driving about 100 miles after servicing, I then changed the rotors and it continued making that noise.
Thanks for a behind the rotor look!

You saved my butt!!!!! Thanks A1Auto!

rocks get stucck sometimesj
Something im going to check in morning. No other video mentioned dust shield.✊👍 My pads are good and rotor brand new. If the dust shield doesn't fix the problem.... Could it be the caliper & or mounting bracket??🙏
+Fish Life & Knives We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
@@1AAuto was literally the dust shield. 👍
Ima about to cut my dust shield off
If i have similar rust on the edge of my rotor that is contacting the splash/dust guard and causing audible noise when driving, does it cause any damage to the rotor or brakes ?
Thanks man now I know what's wrong with my breaks, another mechanic told me I need break calipers, can that be the noise by my breaks sir
Thanks 1AAuto. I have a scraping noise much like this, but mostly when backing up and when I push the brake pedal down after backing up. I just had the brake pads replaced about 1 week ago. Does it sound like the same thing? Thanks

Another helpful tip is you could actually take a pneumatic wire wheel if you have one and remove loose or built up rust
Hopefully all the noise is cleared up
Thank you so much i was s******g bricks thinking i had to have massive work done lol
Can this be done without taking the tires off?
Can the dust cover be adjusted without taking the wheel off? I get this rhythmic scraping sound when I do a sharp left turn, it is not constant only at a certain point of the wheel turning. Kind of like ch...ch... ch...ch
I have the same rhythmic ch...ch...ch..ch, like you described. I don't know what car you have, but I was able to bend away the shield without taking the wheels off on my car. Turn the wheels all the way one way to try and reach in behind for one wheel. Then do the other by turning the wheels in the opposite direction.
How long can u drive the car like with that sound
You da man! Worked for me. Thank you!
Just replaced brakes ,and rotors back now hear grinding on 03 buick was told could be calipers
Change my brakes because of squealing noise, it's still squealing but only after not driving for a while for example during the morning or after work shift should I replace my rotor
Thank you!!! 🙏🏽 Very helpful video! Saved me time and money from going to the mechanic.
I had this noise so bad on my car, it sounded like someone was banging on a sauce pan with a spoon!
Mines is rubbing against one side of the Caliper. What could be the reason?
My guy just solved my problem🤣
Thank you very helpful video
You should try to slightly bend the shield of the rotor, mine does it while going straigh
If a piston was not compressed enough after putting a new rotor and brake pad on, would that cause a grind on the front of the rotor?
A screwdriver fix, I'm in, thanks!

+Nedo the car Guy Thank you very much! We appreciate your feedback!
Literally sounds like my exact issue. Comes from the front right side when i thrn left 🤣🤣 i just now need a jack and a jack stand…
Thank you so much! I thought I would have to change my wheel bearing but no.
Thanks..
I just replaced my brakes, & I hear this noise loud..
I will give this a shot..

That's awesome camera work under the car. I love these guys. I am starting a mobile auto repair business--do you guys have commercial/professional accounts? I didn't see it on your website.
Hey Matt we are currently not offering any business accounts. +Matt Garza
Any you also take a wire wheel to the outer edge of the disc to get rid of some of the rust?
I have a sqeaking/screeching noise that sounds like metal scraping, ive replace wheel hub bearing and brake pads, any idea what it could be?
