    And there is no just no permanent fix for it. You would have to physically desolder every inductor in the VRM on the Graphics Card and replace them with higher quality ones. My old Vega 56 Strix literally screams at very high FPS and 100% load.

    If you lock your framerate to your monitor's refresh rate, it can mitigate some coil whine. Typically coil whine is at it's worst when the framerates are completely insane, which usually is on menu or loading screens. Those 300 ish FPS on loading screens makes some cards SCREEEECH. If you can't get out of your PSU try locking frames down in Afterburner or Wattman.

    I agree with you to great extent, but you didn`t mention few aspects ;) Great material though!
    1. Not everyone would be able to hear the coil whine. If your hear lots of higher frequency sounds (like myself) you`ll be distracted most of the time if there`s any whine, even if there`s not much. I`ve been torturing myself with a GTX 770 back in the days - these were quite power hungry and even using a decent psu wouldn`t help. Had to sell it while the constant headache wasn`t doing me any good ;)
    Back to the point - if you know you don`t hear much of high freq, you can skip looking for a better PSU while you won`t hear anything. If you hear a lot of it - it`s possible the PSU change won`t cut it -> then on to next point..
    2. The coil whine differs greatly between the cards. It depends on the power delivery (both gpu-side and psu-side), while smoothening the current is key (that`s why the example of connecting two power cables was nice). If you experience lots of power spikes then you`ll probably hear the coil whine as well. However, the quality of the coils, capacitors and other elements are also significant. That`s why changing the card itself is a step you`ll probably have to take if you hear a lot of whine having quality psu. Of course I`m talking warranty cards - if they don`t have it, you can put some non conductive silicone over the coils - they won`t have as much space to resonate hence the sound frequency will be more acceptable. That`s an oldschool tip but works surprisingly well - though I haven`t used this solution for a few years.
    3. Also having the card connected through a low quality extender cable won`t do any good for the power delivery. The PCI-E slot can provide 75 W of power (if I recall correctly) and it will use it in any mid to high end card. Again - if the current is not smooth and there are some spikes there`s a greater chance of whining.
    4. In most cases you can eliminate the whine by using v-sync or fps cap. I don`t think many people are using this method nowadays, but it`s a possiblity.
    5. Some games are generating lots of whine from the card even though you`re not using max power of the gpu. Had this problem with GTX 770/970 in CS:GO - even though I was using 30-40% of GPU power (low resolution, low details - I was CPU bound) and limited my fps to something like 240 (max in-game fps was about 400) the problem would still exist. Probably it`s due to the implementation of the source engine ;)
    Probably got some more but wanted to mention a few. Hope anyone would get something from it ;)

    Small update on this regard from my testing, at the moment no matter the GPU (AMD or NVidia) it's a lottery, first you have to determine which component is the coil whine starter. My GPU is a EVGA 3080 XC3, and I started with a straight power 11 (yes a little on the short side) I changed to a Seasonic TX, PX 750, BeQuiet Dark Power 12 750(2021 model) and a Corsair RM750X. And from my experience my card is almost silent. In my ranking SS and Corsair are on the silent side with almost no to no coil whine. BeQuiet was the worst but there seems to be with the first charge of PSU, because there are a lot of complaints about whining and screaming under load.
    Oh and btw, 80+ rating didn't matter between the titanium and gold rating, because there was no difference in noise whatsoever. If not for the retarded cheap a.. fan (bearing noise...) in those PSU I would've stuck with them, but now it's a Corsair PSU Gold instead of a plat. But for now the result matters, even tho I wished there wasn't this aweful testing and checking involved. I rate this 2/10 user friendly.

    • @AncientGameplays
      @AncientGameplays  3 года назад +1

      Yeap, one thing is the efficiency and another one is the parts used in the PSU (caps for example). Corsair rm series have 100% japonese caps which are way better than the usual ones, and the filters are also better, hence the results

    • @NinO12752
      @NinO12752 3 года назад +3

      @@AncientGameplays indeed, fun fact a lot of them are claiming for Japanese 100% caps, but I feel like the QC on some PSU are lacking. Maybe some real world testing would get them closer to the point where they might figure faulty parts. I mean a test 30 or rx6000 and some load is not that much to ask for. But nonetheless after a lot of money spent in transit I can say I'm happy with the result. Maybe not 100% gone but at a point where I would say it's fine. And I'm very sensible for this kind of stuff. ;)

    I can confirm this "fix". I have recently upgrade from 1060 aero to 3060 TI OC and was horrified by the loud coil whine of my new 3060 TI. So much so that I got a "be quite silent base 802" case to try and keep the noise level down a bit. It worked, but coil whine was still very noticeable even when gaming with loud sound. My pc has an older Fractal Design 1000W PSU, and it was making too much noise and I wanted to change it out for a while. So I bought a new RM650 PSU and installed it in my PC.
    I was pleasantly surprised how much the fan noise of my pc had gotten from changing the PSU, but even more surprised when running my first game.
    The coil whine is GONE..... Like so quiet now that I have to run a stress test, open the case and put my ear right next to the card to hear any coil whine at all. And even then it's mostly overshadowed by the fan noise. I was blown away and can now enjoy gaming with no distracting noise from the PC :D

      Yeap, you're pushing the psu a bit there I believe. Also, it may be a cpu or ram instability

    My PSU make whistling noise a high pitch whistle like train braking kinda sound when i run games and i thought it's coil whining cause i saw someone talking about it but everything was fine until about 2 days ago my pc start to do a reboot whenever i run a game like ETS2 but not when i run a less needy game like construction simulator 2015 but still my psu make the whistling noise and the game start to stutter and every time the stuttering happens the whistling mutes in sync with it and i don't know if the stutter happens because of the psu or the game stutter because of something else and the whistling stop cause the game freezes for brief second, maybe someone can advice me and tell me if is it possible the psu could effect game performance? and do i need to replace it?
    Sorry about my English and my little knowledge of computers

    I'm having this issue right now i had an old Bequiet 730W and on my new RTX 4080 there was a significant coil whine. I upgraded to be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 750W 80 Plus Gold and the whine got reduced heavily but it's still there it comes only from PSU. GPU is silent. should i try another PSU? I was thinking about trying MSI MPG A850G PCIE5 next.?

    im using a cooler master 550w 80+ gold psu and my graphic card ( sapphire rx 580 8gb ) started this whining thing which is kinda annoying, it happens only in gaming. the whining sound isnt that loud but still noticeable. any clues or tips for this problem beside undervolting?

    • @AncientGameplays
      @AncientGameplays  2 года назад

      Not really, it has to do with the card components and ofc, with the psu

    Running out of ideas here. Had 1070 paired with seasonic focus plus 750w gold, had zero coil whine, now i got xfx 6800 xt, got medium coil whine and random restarts while playing vermintide 2 and witcher 3 on ultra. Could it be the psu at fault or the gpu??

    • @AncientGameplays
      @AncientGameplays  Год назад

      Hey, or you have a defective PSU or you have a cpu and ram instability showing up now since your gpu is now much faster.
      Damn, it can even be as simple as a need of a clean driver installation...

      @@AncientGameplaysDo you think giving 200€ for a white psu like rog 850 gold is worth the money?Seasonic is building them but is it worth spending 200 bucks on a white looking good psu for only 850w and gold certification or should I go with seasonic9(black) 750w gold at 140€ idk im kinda confused.Another question I wanted to ask you is that beside the fact I know you are mostly an amd fanboy,I had ryzen 5 2600 and I decided to change to intel (i7 10700k for the sake of money rather than going to an amd 5600x which would cost a bit more with less cores and threads)so I picked the vfm value this time...Do you think It was a good option for 330€ (i got the marvel's version) real price in greece is 315€ for the regular one...I'm telling you that cuz the new intel gen4 pci is coming (i7 11700k) but i wasnt willing to spend more than ~300 to a cpu for what I do, I think it's more than enough...I hope they are not costing like 350 cuz that would be really unlucky....Anyway glad to see a response from you and tell me your thoughts...You will surely help me!

    Thank you for the great video! I have just built a brand new PC, EXCEPT for the GPU (of course, they are hard to find). So I am using a brand new Corsair RM850x PSU, with a very old GTX 970 GPU. I am getting coil whine at all times. When I move my mouse, type on my keyboard, in game, etc. I unfortunately do not have another GPU to test on, and I cannot get integrated graphics to work on my motherboard so I can't test the PC without the GPU either :/
    Is it likely the old GPU is at fault here?

    This is good video and people deserve to try if they connected two pcie 8pin connectors with one power cable with a splitter or with two separator cables. I remember I heard very loud coil whine with my 2080 Ti when its two pcie 8pin connectors were connected with only one power cable with a splitter...

      ~ Use a separate power pin cable.

      Being 1000w doesn't mean much sadly and older psus suffer more (even more on high loads), but considering the insane power draw of vega 64 i assume coil whine is "normal"
