Rimmer: You're right, in the future i will do my best to reduce suffering and improve the lot of man kind. Lister: Were you going? Rimmer: To smash your guitar!
Hmm, series 8 blue Midget, series 6/7 Rimmer costume. I guess they didn't want to give away spoilers as to the nature of Rimmer's return, am I right in thinking this went out before series 8 itself?
Yeah it went out about a year before series 8, and you're right, they didn't want to spoil that it would feature human Rimmer, nor that the main characters were on the run from the Red Dwarf prison
How could I have not seen this before!? Now I'm sad because this is like a clip from a dream series that never happened: The 4 boys + Holly + Kochanski alone on Starbug! It could have been the best series ever, but it never happened. The only time we got Holly back, we also had the silly resurrected crew - which was fun, but it wasn't quite the same show anymore. I know a lot of people didn't like having Kochanski on board, but I think the show benefits from a small female presence, like when Hattie was on. I also loved Professor Edgington from "Entangled" and still really wish they'd bring her back! Here's how I would do my perfect series of Red Dwarf… You've got the 4 boys + the male Holly going off in Starbug having adventures, maybe on some kind of quest. Then back on Red Dwarf, the on-board computer is Hilly (transferred from another dimension). Along with Hilly you've also got Kochanski permanently stationed on Red Dwarf - so you have the two girls together, though the difference in intelligence between the two leads to a lot of comedic tension. Kochansi also thinks Red Dwarf is too industrial, and she gives the quarters more of a woman's touch, making them more comfortable and cosy. (Though she is very serious about her privacy and refuses to let any of the boys into her own quarters.) So Kochanski and Hillie aren't constantly there with the lads, but you do get a good dose of them throughout the series. Kochanski could act as a kind of controller, speaking to the boys on the screen and giving them information. In this series, Holly and Hilly are two fully separate people (being from different dimensions) and they don't really know each other, and don't see much of each other as they belong to different vessels. So there's an occasional bit of flirting and romance between them. I would also have an episode where, due to some computer error, Holly's Queeg program is reinstated, but rather than being fake, this time Queeg is really Queeg. LOL
Made in a bit of a 'no man's land' between 7+8 and clearly non-canon [bit like those AA adverts] but interesting to note: Kochanski is wearing Series 7 costume but Series 8 hair Hologram Rimmer is present despite becoming Ace in series 7 and a new human Rimmer being in Series 8 Norman Lovette is back as Holly They seem to be in a small space ship like 6+7 rather than back in Red Dwarf.
If you think about it, it could be after Series 8. Cat could be rewearing an old outfit, same with Kochanski. We know at that point that Holly would be around until Lister leaves that bath running and we know at some point that the original hologram Rimmer does return. As for why they're in a smaller craft, could just be venturing out from Red Dwarf somewhere.
Interesting note, viewers in BBC Northern Ireland did not get to see this sketch on the night. BBC Children in Need used to have a lot of regional opt outs from the network broadcast in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, and many times they would miss out on some sketches broadcast on the network as they aired their own local content, this was one of the occasions.
BBC Northern Ireland would opt out from the network broadcast much more than any English region. For example they would show the network broadcast at 7.00pm, then from 7.15pm they would take over with their own local presenters and local entertainment with local radio/tv presenters doing stupid things for the night. They would air some sketches from the network but usually at various times compared to when the network broadcast aired it in London, and on many occasions they ignored many sketches and aired their own local material instead. One instance I remember was when Paul McKenna the hypnotist, had a routine of hypnotising celebrities. We never saw it at all. It was only when BBC NI handed back to London at around 1.00am did we find out what we missed.
These kind of charity skits are usually terrible but this one feels like it could have been taken out of a real episode. Great writing and acting as always

Savile was banned from 'CiN' by the producer in 1980. Although he didn't know for sure he heard the rumours and made him persona non grata for the charity.
Kryten: "I think we may be able to help, ma'am. Send something back in time and contribute to the appeal. Cat: "You mean...'give us your money or your planet gets it'?" Brilliant stuff.
This is going to sound kind of geeky, but I thought the alternate reality Kochanszky never met the hologram Rimmer in the series. So how do both of them wind up here?
Exactly. I now think Grant Naylor love putting in deliberate continuity errors after Lister's double appendix removal in Thanks For The Memory and Legion.
Telethons were invented by Americans. Your PBS stations has loads of them every year begging for money. Ed McMahon hosted an annual telethon for years with Jerry Lewis.

It's like an impractical one piece bathing suit that revealing outerwear. In TV it's usually shown as pajamas for women, a stripper costume or something whores wore on those TV Westerns.
Fair enough. Still a bit of a shit joke. Doug Naylor didn't really know what to do with Chloe Annett's Kochanski jokewise other than 'she is a woman' and 'Lister (and occasionally Rimmer) wants to fuck her'. It was a good decision not bring her back for the new series.
You Brits and your slang that no other country can understand, this does get watched by more than just the UK, I had no idea what the joke meant either @@scorchx3000
First of all, Norman Lovett, so I have read, wants nothing more to do with Red Dwarf. I really liked this. It was a clever and funny little fund-raiser promo that worked well for Children in Need and honoured Red Dwarf.
Channel 5... Oh yes, I know it. It's the one that aired 'How do they do it', 'Robot Wars' and 'Chris Barrie's massive engines'.
So they were absolutely right
To be fair to Chris and Bob their shows were made by Discovery and only rerun on 5. 'Robot Wars' went there to die.
I know but the original incarnation went to Five to die.
That's probably why they made the joke in the first place
Oh yeah, didn't think of that.
Thanks for posting mate, never seen this before!

and back in 2008, little did we know what Jimmy Savile and Gary gitface were doing to the kids on those very shows!

Urbanfire123 at the end of season 8 I believe. In the Back to Earth special they mention that Kochanski travelled around with the crew for a bit
But the ultimate question... is it the nano Rimmer or the original hologram one who left to become Ace in this??
Rebecca P Has to be nano Rimmer since the original Rimmer would've already left before meeting alternate dimension Kochanski

i hope they keep the scutters in the new series :-) they were cool lil bots lol
