    The thing about language, the way that my therapist put it concisely (from all of my confused ramblings) was "you have a really good vocabulary and are perfectly able to speak, but you don't feel the connection to the words or feel like they're enough to express what you mean in that moment" which honestly, is the most relatable thing here for me

      wow... that’s the most accurate description i’ve ever seen. i have such a hard time putting my actual feelings to words because even though i do have a large vocabulary, it just doesn’t seem like there’s any words that quite fit the emotion i’m describing.

    • @liene93
      @liene93 3 года назад +4

      @@CellGames2006 maybe because my writing skills are so much more developed than my speech, and it feels like I have more order when I type down words instead of when I speak. My brain sometimes goes "should I say this word first or that word after?" and if I fail to say the wrong word first I will be totally embarrassed and that will make it even more messed up. Sometimes I just say something very random if I don't have time to think what I want to say. I'm not diagnosed with anything but I sometimes wonder if I'm a little bit autistic.

    I wish I could've seen videos like this earlier. Back when I was younger, around the age of 9/10 I got diagnosed with autism. But my parents never told me anything about it, no signs, no symptoms, how to deal with it. Only that the term was used as a bad word, and whenever i acted out, they'd say "That's so autistic of you." So I never really liked talking about it, ever. I'm slowly getting to learn that it's not 'bad' and what it actually includes. So I'm really gratefull for videos like these that help people educate themselves.

    As an autistic male I find these videos so relatable because one of my biggest problems is masking. Do you think autistic people masking their emotions makes it harder for them to develop emotional intelligence? Would this be different in men vs women?

    • @visualsno
      @visualsno 4 года назад +66

      Some men do present how a woman’s autism presents. It’s not exactly women autism vs men autism, but the way that they’re more likely to present in each sex. Females can have ‘male’ autism and vice versa. Men can mask as well, it’s just female socialisation that makes women more likely to develop that way

    • @scheimaa172
      @scheimaa172 4 года назад +33

      It's funny because I didn't mask and when I told my brother who has a lot of friends that I can't socialize with others he told me to observe and imitate. I didn't take his advice since I already tried it and found it too exhausting and not rewarding enough to bother with. My brother on the other hand developed an identity crisis and people still saw through his act.

      @publiusvelocitor4668 3 года назад +15

      Agree, and I think masking is what makes it difficult to keep friends. (One of the things) Because it takes a lot of energy, but your friends you made with the mask on EXPECT to always see you that way... so either you lose them when the mask falls off, or you don't want to see them any more, because you know it's going to take a lot of energy, and you get the feeling that they aren't even friends with the actual "you."

      What would you have done differently if you had been diagnosed earlier? Just learning that our 22yo daughter may be on spectrum. She's struggled since 14yo and it's been the typical therapy route for depression and anxiety and ADD. Just starting to look into support for Asperger's. Thank you for any advice.

They’re the ones that often get misdiagnosed with ADHD. Then there’s the low energy ones like me that will desperately try to do everything that’s expected but then collapse on the couch exhausted

    I wasn't diagnosed until the 4th grade. (With Asperger's & ADHD) However, my parents knew I was on the spectrum from a very young age. In kindergarten, my teacher noticed how I was always alone on the playground, and whenever another student approached me to play with me, or to be friends, I would either ignore them, or say "Go away". She grew concerned, and called my parents. (As most young children don't have much of a introverted/ambiverted/extroverted sense yet, they mostly play with anyone.) Also, with the one friend I did have, we fought all the time. But still remained friends. Anyways, the school I was at didn't need much to get me an IEP and help from the resource staff. But when I moved the summer before 5th grade, I had a lot of trouble adjusting to my new school. Everyone was so different. I never masked much, and tended to just do what I liked. I never felt bad about wearing clothing an 8 year old would wear in Middle School, (such as a Pikachu hoodie with neon jeans and kids size tennis shoes) or for drawing all the time. My stims are what got me teased. But I still didn't hide them. It's still very hard for me to communicate, and understanding social ques is an issue.

    Hey chloe I know you might not check this but I recently found out that I’m autistic and I don’t know how to make people understand the tics I have. I severe OCD. I ails have ADHD, major depression disorder, I’m dyslexic, PTSD, and I have really bad aniexty/ panic attacks. I live with a super abssuive family and they hate me and blame me for everything. Treat like dirt when I try to explain to my mum she is dismissive and I found a year ago when they had tested for ADHD and dyslexia when I was 16 they called her and let her know. I found she kept it from me until I was 20 and I found out when I went to therapist again and they told me I was diagnosed 4 years ago and I never got the I needed because she hid it from me. I’ve tried explain to my family certain things about my mental health and they make me feel worse. I’m got kicked out a couple days ago and I was
    wondering if you had any advice on how to move forward and be ok with my autism. Everyone told me it was bad and It makes me stupid so. I do I look it more positively

I hope that you found a safer and more stable situation. Look for resources in your area by searching your state/county/city and autism resources or homeless/transitional housing resources, autism support groups, domestic abuse survivor support groups, etc. You should be able to access social workers, counselors, and healthcare professionals to help you move forward safely & strong. Wishing you the best.

      Don't allow other people's shitty actions/ behavior define YOU. I know it's super duper hard, but please get yourself some professional help if you can. make sure you are in a safe space or around safe people if you can live somewhere else with other people. I would highly recommend looking into autism self-love/ self-acceptance, or how to accept yourself despite a diagnosis. it took me a long, long time to learn to love myself but I can promise you the journey will be worth it, just keep trying & keep doing your best & don't beat yourself up over setbacks or hardships.
      I was kicked out at 15 & have many of the same struggles as you. I was able to get myself on govt insurance after getting kicked out so that I had healthcare - that was a huge step for me getting better. find resources in your area & always advocate for yourself, there is help out there you just have to find it (sometimes it's tough but don't give up).

    The lack of cooperative play is something I relate to SO much!! I remember when I was 6-7 years old, I loooved playing make-believe and I had lots of fun creating different sets of characters, drawing them, inventing their personalities and relationships etc, and then presenting it to my friends to ask them to play my new "game" with me. But I always gave them strict instructions for what to do and even what to say so they were acting out exactly the scenes I had planned - going so far as to sometimes having someone standing on the side doing nothing because their character wasn't in that particular scene! I so clearly remember my parents saying to me "you can't tell your friends you invented a game and then act like that, you'll have to tell them you wrote a play!"

    This video describes my life experience (not so much seizures, but everything else). I'm 25 and I've never been diagnosisd. It's interesting how differently autism appears in girls compared to boys. The hardest part is feeling all these things but not being able to explain to other people why things are challenging. I'm comfortable with myself and wouldn't change to become "neurotypical," but there's almost always a sense that something is off in my social interactions. I'm usually quite literal in my way of thinking, so it takes effort and masking to appear "normal."

But wow, after watching this video, I realised, that all of those things 100% apply to me, especially the imagination part. I remember I used to "direct" imagination play all the time and got in trouble with other kids, because they didn't (understandably) like that. But since I wasn't diagnosed then, they just brushed it off as me just being a brat.

    I recognize myself so much in this. Although they had expected autism with me ever since I was a child, I did an official test when I was 18 years old. As a child, the test said I was heavily mentally handicapped and my parents looked at me and were like: ... No. Because I was not but I could not do a second opinion until I was 18.
    The talking part really sticks with me. I find it difficult to hold a conversation with people especially if their conversation does not particularly interest me. I also tend to talk about the same thing over and over a lot xD Oops.
    On the friend base... I used to be a loner, still am, but I was lucky enough that my moms best friend also had a child with autism, and we always played on other sides of the rooms, not talking to each other and leave and say we had a nice day. After 27 years she is still my best friend and we do understand each other a lot and I appreciate that friendship, especially as I know a lot of people have difficulties with it. WE also have a very big extended friendgroup right now, consisted of about 12 people who all see each other as friends. And guess what, most are either autistic, ocd or whatever. Fun fact is that our "parties" we tend to do every once in a while to get together, are usually sitting together in a room, gaming on our own, just here and there a talk to each other and just have some fun but not bother each other when we need some time, such small things can make a difference for friendship a lot.

I was diagnosed with ADHD a couple of years ago (which is 100% a correct diagnosis), but my new therapist brought up that I show a lot of autistic traits as well (difficulty reading non-verbal social cues, sensory sensitivities, intense special interests, etc.). I also deal with anxiety that developed partially because I went undiagnosed, didn't understand myself, and had to mask in front of everyone except my parents and brother for so long.
    After doing a bunch of research, me being autistic as well as having ADHD makes a lot of sense. I'm hoping to get a neuropsychologist appointment next year to get evaluated since my therapist doesn't feel qualified to officially make a diagnosis.

I think some people, especially people who have gone their whole lives being socially awkward don't want to get diagnosed in fear of being told they're on the spectrum especially considering we've gone our whole lives trying to function as a "somewhat normal" member of society. Mental illness/disorders are considered taboo in my family and community. My mom didn't even want to admit that I needed antidepressants and anxiety meds. Against her wishes, I talked to my general doctor and got on them anyway. I get through work and classes having to communicate with people, but man it is a struggle. The mask is real 😣

    I am so bad at communicating I cannot start a conversation myself. If someone else asks me something I can usually keep a conversation going but usually it dies out pretty quick. Like you said unless it is something I’m interested in, I have such a hard time communicating.
    Ask me about Biochemistry or playing the Violin though and I’ll never shut up!

      If you haven't already, talk to your healthcare provider about that, it sounds like you may be having a different kind of seizure from a "grand mal" or tonic/clonic seizure that most people think of. There are several different types of seizures, such as absence seizures, where you kind of space out or may even black out/pass out or focal seizures that only involve a part of your body twitching or shaking. Be well, thanks for sharing, and hope you don't mind my unsolicited infodump!

    My child has recently found out they have ASD and ADHD and they are 17. All of these points are relevant especially the “directing games”. I couldn’t understand why they would play this way and often said “just play the game. You don’t have to tell the others how to play”. Thank you for your videos hun because with your help, I’ve been able to understand what they’ve gone through, being diagnosed so late, a little more. Also you’ve helped me not feel so guilty for not seeing the symptoms earlier.

    Im a 13 year old girl and im not sure if I have autism
    I am a bit different than others in terms of social stuff, I did make friends alot although I didn’t really keep any of them, I often dominate in conversations barely letting the other person have a word, few interests most of them being artistic ( drawing + storytelling), didn’t like playing with others and would get mad when they didn’t follow a “script”, my mom said I have a big vocabulary but I have very poor communication skills, was very depressed when I was 10 and am very socially anxious, seemingly normal development but I have no interest in boys or romance and rely on other people to do things for me and to guide me, I even try not to cover my ears in social situations and avoid doing things like leg bouncing, chair rocking, muscle tensing repeatedly and other things like not making specific noises.
    But I still feel like these possible symptoms are too mild for me to be autistic
    I don’t think I’ve ever had a meltdown and my brain is very good at taking all the loud noise and bright lights into a paste that doesn’t effect me at all and I don’t know if my interests are special interests at all
    I seem to have alot of the minor symptoms but all of the major ones seem to be very minor or non-existent.
    Any advice from people is welcomed because I really just want an answer so I can stop thinking about it and feeling like I’m attention seeking 😔

    Okay so like, I’ve always been one of the “weird kids”, I didn’t have friends until third grade, and up until then, most of the other kids thought I was autistic. (I didn’t know this until like sixth grade but I thought it was kinda funny at the time lol) But now that I’m looking back at my life so far, I’m thinking that I might actually be somewhere on the autism spectrum. My parents don’t seem to notice anything because they either think it’s my Tourette’s or just me being weird. Idk, I kind of want to know, but I don’t know how I would find out.

    Wow. Thanks cousin. Context: My cousin once asked me “Are you autistic?” I don’t have any issue with autistic but I was offended because I didn’t think that I had their unique brain. My cousin is also known for being the trouble maker so I thought he was just messing with me. Turns out maybe I am autistic.
    I’ve always excelled in academics but I’ve always liked to work alone. I was used to working alone since I’m the weirdo in my school but it’s still kinda sucked. I’m socially awkward and have trust issues.

Only understanding and listening to people (as j struggle to read) I'm slowly realising how much I've been masking to myself and the truth is coming out. Saving this to get my point across. So valid. Hi Chloe! I love your TikTok and RUclips channel! I was wondering if you had any tips on bringing up autism to a parent. I’ve started to recognize some traits in myself that seem indicative of autism, and while I’m definitely not certain that I’m autistic, I want to look into it further as it seems like a definite possibility. However, I have no idea how to bring this up to my parents to start looking for some answers and was wondering if you had any insight. Thank you so much! I love your videos!

    • @Maple_Usagi103
      @Maple_Usagi103 4 года назад +6

      Hi! I know I'm not Chloe but I recently went through this myself and I don't know if you have brought it up to your parents yet but maybe I can help a little.
      I don't know your parents and how they think about things like mental health and such. But my mom had originally thought I had ADHD because of a coworker describing things they struggles with and she thought it sounded like me. She told me what she thought about it and I ended up doing my own research and long story short I discovered that I was autistic and not ADHD.
      Anyway, I found this book on Amazon that might be helpful. It's called "I think I might be Autistic" by Cynthia Kim. You could get that and go through it, and if you feel you are definitely on the spectrum then you could bring it with you to show your parents (and possibly along with some youtube videos that describe you) as basically your evidence so to speak.
      You might be surprised if you are on the spectrum how understanding your parents might be. I know when I started talking about it with my mom, she would always say "I knew there was something about you that was different from other kids" (She used to babysit a lot so she had experience with other children and how they behaved) Unfortunately because I am a girl, the doctors never put two and two together and I grew up undiagnosed. Not for my mom's lack of trying to figure out why I was so different.
      Anyways sorry for the rambling and hopefully this made some type of sense and was helpful in some way.
      I think you just have to gauge how understanding and open minded you think your parents are. (Which I know is hard when you are on the spectrum) They might pleasantly surprise you and it is also really helpful to have some perspective from your parents of when you were younger, if and when you ever seek out a diagnosis.
