I think you are correct, but its understandable how she was led to make that mistake to elevate her WNBA potential. There were probably a lot of respectable, knowledgeable people telling her she could do it. Also, she put in the effort to make it work though obviously it wasn't enough.

According to Coach Mulkey, Pro Scouts wanted to see her game at the point guard position because they think in the pros, she would interchange between both positions. Her conversion to a PG would have been smoother if she had known the Mulkey system then, she would have just been learning a new position. She thought it better to go to a high visible program with a lot of pro prospects like a mini pro team she spoke of. LSU girls play a more creative playground style. I think her game is more open shooter suburban style IMO. I blame Mulkey because she should have converted her back to a shooter.

LSU is getting the top player in Louisiana which is a point guard. Usually when they get that kind of player, it's Seimone Augustus, Mikaylah Williams, etc. So LSU will be fine. They just need reliable depth and they're right back knocking on the title door.

At the beginning of the year, I said that Makila should have been groomed to take over the point guard. But Mulkey seemed determined to cater to HVL, maybe because of a past relationship when she was recruited by her out of high school. When HVL first evaluated where to go to college, she didn't think her game fit Mulkey's low post system; she was correct. I wonder what she thought had changed over time because Mulkey still runs the same system. People tried to make HVL Alexis Morris because of her conversion, but Alexis Morris knew Mulkey's system and had played in it two years before her PG conversion. What HVL should have done was spend the summer working with Alexis instead of going back for USA basketball. Championship runs start in the offseason, and none of those starters spent their summer in Baton Rouge. Back to Lousiville, had Jeff decided to give her some time at both positions, she probably would not have left in the first place, but he made it clear that wasn't going to happen when he went and got a PG out of the portal, so she went where she could have favor. She needs to go to a team that needs shooters, and that runs a perimeter offense because you are not going to get that with Kim Mulkey.

Kateri is a smart, veteran Big 10 bball player & of playing in big games...unflappable under full court pressure & it's nice to have an enforcer around..if needed. Yes Iowa is looking for guards seeing the “Firm” of Clark, Martin & March-all leaving. As you point out, being seen as the Clark replacement is difficult enough but would be a disaster if seen as not even replacing Kate Martin. I doubt HVL would make anyone forget Gabbie Marshall defensively.
HVL pluses - as you point out has Name & Likeness recognition, and can shoot.
Minuses - defense … hard when only 5’7” and perhaps lacking (5’9”) Marshall’s relentless energy.

This year though hard is the best thing that could have happened to HVL. Point Guard is actually her best chance at making it honestly. Because its not her natural position her decision making was questionable at times. She has improved a lot since the beginning of the season though. But coming to the SEC, a conference known for tough physical defense and great point guard play expecting to dominate was delusional. Not sure what Mulkey was thinking choosing an inexperienced point after the play of Alexis Morris.

Hailey needs to go somewhere that will allow her to shoot the ball 15-20 times a game. problem is no legitimate championship team would allow her to come in and play that way, her career field goal percentage doesn't warrant that. which means she would need to attend a school like louisville or as you said a california.

If it's one thing I've learned in womens bball is you can't have enough point guatds on the team. Ask Texas, LSU, etc. As I recall, Kim's prior team could've used an extra PG a couple of years ago. I'd get the best Junior Collage PG I could get as a back up to the back up.

The fact that everybody is talking about her means she is something...aint she? Only HVL knows what she needs. She has had a good experience in LSU positive and negative. She now understands her weaknesses better in terms of being a drfensive player and how she has improved in that over the last year. She also learnt that being a PG is leadership position that is akin to the coach on the floor. Requires a number of skills all working simultenously together efficiently. So it was never about being the right fit and playing the same way she used to at Louisville. Rather, it was about having more tools in her arsenal to be versatile enough to be in the roster in the W and be as effective on both 1 & 2 positions when required. She is a hard worker. This year was her kryptonite and it was a good choice to join LSU. She is a much tougher, wiser and mentally strong player than she was in the Lousville bubble. Nobody can guard Caitlin Clark, not even Morriss was able to. So she did her assignment well and should not be mocked for Clark's brilliance. I didnt hear anyone mock any player last year when Clark touched SC. But of course because HVL plays in a team that is loved and hated in equal measure, she will be singled out and mocked for not being able to stop someone who nobody has been able to stop yet. It will all come together wherever she decides to go. My prediction is, she will continue switiching to both positions and will develop her jump shot as a PG much more than a perimeter shooter.

The only correction that I have to your statement is that during this years championship game with SC from quarters 2-4 Raven Johnson held CC to 12 points, and stole the ball from her, I believe twice. CC is not unguardable. As for HVL, I think she would do well at USC or Standford.

Step into her own. A team where she isn't sharing someone's spotlight. To a team not in the national spotlight but one that can be and she can be a leader and have less expectations on her and opportunities to improve her talents. Take the team from a cover band TO a rock star band. The new coach at Tennessee is run n gun fast pace, defensive pressure. She could flourish in the perimeter 3 point offense and improve her defense with a supporting cast. It's a place at a level that her stock will not go down if she doesn't make the final four. She can absolutely increase her value immensely. The ceiling iis unlimited where the floor is still high. It's a win win situation for her. Somewhere like iowa or UConn they will have to win the championship or she will be the scapegoat because the second she signs with one of them they will be high in that conversation. If they don't win it, the media will put it all on her as to why they didn't because she is who or them in that conversation, even if she has a breakout player of the year type season she'll still be the "could have improved....." 3pt percentage a could points or her defense was not as intense as needed....etc. If Caldwell and Tennessee doesn't come calling, then she needs to be calling them TODAY! Not to mention all that NIL money available and a nationally recognized women's college basketball name. The smart choice would be wearing Orange and White.

I really have no opinion on where she should go, beyond "anywhere but LSU" and "away from Kim Mulkey." The "Dirty Debutante" thing did not enhance her rep, and that's what you get playing for Mulkey.
That said, she's a great shooting guard. I question whether she can go the the W at her height, but she's great either way. Some team will take a chance on her learning something about how to get open in the W, and she will win or fail. No story there.
As a point guard... no. Just no. She doesn't have the court vision and she's not a great passer and she's too slow (because she's so damn short.) Learning some ball handling skills would have been great for her; if she was a better ball handler she'd be a lock in the W because she's so short. That's one place in the W where being short is an advantage. But she didn't demonstrate anything to me in her season at LSU. She has another, now, and that's fine. She also needs some rehab on her rep. It's actually good she didn't fit in at LSU. That will make rehabbing her rep easier.
Of more interest is what position she plays. She's a natural 2. I think, had she not gone to LSU, she would have been able to attract some interest in the W even at her height, or could have if her scoring percent stayed the same or better. Now, it's anybody's guess. I take your point about taking a risk. But some risks should not be taken, and that one may have been a mistake. If she slots in somewhere as a 2-- even, maybe particularly, off the bench-- and still does good, then she can go. If she develops her ball handling skills and her passing, she could play backup 1 or an alternative, in case they were guarding the primary hard of she was in foul trouble or whatever.
