@@TheJarritosman no they cant. the way valve works is basically a free for all development style. basically i can switch projects when ever i want leaving games like tf2 horribly under staffed and resulting in no updates ever happening. not to mention how often development teams fluctuate its impossible to get anything done. the only way for tf2 to get updates again is basically changing the way their company works entirely which i am not opposed to what so ever.

This is another problem. They did not do marketing very well, apparently the game had been in closed alpha for a very long time with certain content creators having access to it for longer than one year. Also, near release there was no free beta. No free keys unless you attended PAX somehow.

I'd rather not. Valve hadn't developed a game in forever, and then we got Artifact to show us if they even still could. We saw the answer. So if you want to imagine that, imagine all those game series getting an Artifact-level stinker each as their latest, long-awaited installment... all three at the same time. If they ever release those, probably best if it's done one by one, to mitigate the risk and enable Valve to learn inbetween.

TF2's in-game competitive* The comp scene is great, and wasn't even made by valve because valve doesn't care about TF2. The in-game comp on the other hand, yeah, that's really bad.
It's not that the game wasn't fun, it's that people expected better from Valve. For a company that is famous for its ambitious 3D action games, whose reputation has since been slowly circling the drain for years due to their neglect of their classic IPs and refusal to make anything but new microtransactions, Valve needed something big to win people back over. Instead they put out a game based on one of their infamously microtransaction-based IPs, in a genre that's well known for being riddled with microtransactions. The reaction alone probably killed any hope Artifact might have had, but on top of that Valve decided they wanted to double dip on monetization. That Artifact should cost $20 for a game in a genre that's usually free to play, AND it should also have microtransactions for buying cards. At this point the game goes from a mere blunder to an outright insult. It's like Valve saying "Oh you don't like mtx huh? You liked our old games better? Go fuck yourself. This is the way we do things now." So it really had nothing to do with if the game was any good or not, it was just Valve pissing away the last of their good will with a move that finally convinced everyone that they're completely out of touch and no longer care about games. People expect this kind of shit from EA or Activision but they were still holding onto hope that Valve could be better. Artifact was the last straw.

Valve always approached micro transactions in a non-pay 2 win manner, CS:GO, Dota 2, TF2 all built on cosmetics (primarily), TF2 had only side grade weapons. Artifact is just a bizarre release, almost like it was released to be a flop and make point, and not make money, It it seems like the anti-thesis to TF2 F2P debut, which was about accessibility, freeriders and "whales" working together to make a healthy community.

The the thing that hurt it was that Overwatch launched while it was being made and by the time they showed it off people wouldn't stop calling it an Overwatch clone despite it being different and despite it being in development before Overwatch was announced.

That may be true, but it's not a gem if no one plays it because valve makes it cost money. People constantly overestimate how good their games are, and I don't understand why. Always these multiplayer games forcing a price upfront, then eventually go f2p when everything goes tits up and no one buys their game. Like ffs, it's a MP game, you should make sure you have a good playerbase. It's basically not salvagable at this point.
The story of Artifact's dev cycle is depressing, the death of the game was almost entirely based on the monetization and terrible first impression. More than anything else, Artifact proved that when left unchecked for over a decade, a company like Valve can become so incredibly out of touch that they became convinced they knew what their audience wanted, more than the audience itself. The game was rushed due to pressures from Garfield & Newell, the game was lied about in the lead up marking provided by Newell himself, and most importantly, Garfield demanded the monetization strategy above all else. Richard and his longtime creative partner were fired from Valve shortly after the game's launch. The game's director, Brandon Rhienhert is reportedly still working on retooling the game for a 2.0 launch sometime in 2020. I personally disagree with the sentiment that the game wasn't fun overall. I understand how my obvious personal bias would make such a claim laughable, but as one of those remaining 100 players, I still do wish for something to be reborn out of the basic structure built by Valve through over four years. The story of the game's original pitch, development, announcement, hype cycle, launch, and death is far more nuanced and detailed then Charlie is illustrating here, and it deserves to be told soon.
I would like to see a whole world successfully built around it because having more games in the ecosystem roping more fans of more broad genres in is probably a good thing if done well, but at the same time I'm just so sick of card games I can't be bothered caring. part of me feels like they deserved it for thinking anyone wanted a damn card game. I'm probably just feeling vindictive though
@@DeSinc My opinion on the situation is exactly this. Nobody wanted it. Nobody has much interest in it. I'm not a big fan of card games and i'm definitely not going to spend $20 on one. If it was free, then maybe, it's why I tried out Gwent, and it was fun for a bit. But there's just no way i'd spend $20 on Artifact, regardless of if it got better or not.
I *really* liked artifact. I still do. It is my favorite card game out of all of the ones I have tried. I didn't know much about it up until the month before it released , but I learned the story gradually and gradually became more disappointed with how the game was handled behind the scenes. I'm sure Garfield had some good influence on the project, but even some rando like me can tell you trying to spoonfeed a game to the Dota2 community that is majority non-free, with an entrance fee, isn't that great of an idea. Look how popular Underlords is for contrast, even though it's a totally different genre from either Dota or Artifact, plenty of people I know that like Dota casually put time into Underlords just because it's free. Big fan of Tyler and patient to see anything he can bring to light regarding Artifact.
Ricochet actually looks pretty decent actually. It's hard to consider it one of their games since it's more like a Half Life Deathmatch mod than a full fledged game.

I agree, core gameplay was strong. But, the creative mechanics weren't fleshed out (they assumed they'd get an expansion), and they didn't have a grind to keep people in the game. Which was beyond fucking stupid. Which is a damn shame, because the tournaments that did exist for Artifact, once you got a sense of what was going on, had a lot of skill and seemed to have solved a lot of the competitive problems that have plagued Hearthstone. No one talks about the ability to create free tournaments. Ah, but it deserves to die. The monetization was embarrassing. Valve got too greedy and killed their own polished and well done game.
I mean Epic is the only real competition Steam has, its still shit, but its competition. Services like Origin, battle.net, and the uplay store will never get the steam bucks, but epic is the only thing i could see really challenging steam.

Instead of having a director or manager everyone shows their work to 10 people for each game that decide what goes in and those 10 people don't even communicate with each other. At this point it's pretty evident this business practice isn't very effective at getting anything done.
@Pr3dator2556 yeah but at the same time no content is made. I understand that devs can choose what to work on but at the same time, valve considers tf2 to be a low priority project to work on. This means that usually TFteam members are constantly moving out of the office to help on other teams but not the other way. This then means 3 days worth of work is done in 3 weeks. Valve is also completely radio silent with tf2, never communicating at all with the community despite the constant pleading. A blog post every month or so saying ‘Hey we’re still here!’ would be great and doesn’t take much effort. Valve have gone on to say however that if support cut for tf2 they would not tell the community leaving them in limbo waiting for an update so it is very worrying. They also could add some small content updates inbetween major updates with cosmetics and maps from the community yet we’ve only got 3 cases of cosmetics since Christmas 2017, and they aren’t even valve made. It’s been almost 2 years since a major content update, that is not good for an online multiplayer game. They probably haven’t forgotten, but it is clear that valve (not the TFteam) just do not care about tf2
The main problem was no one asked for this game. No one expected this from Valve, who made a lot of excellent shooters. There is DOTA, there is Hearthstone, who needed this game? Just imagine if they continue one of their old series instead...

A single VR game won't solve all of VALVe's problems. TF2 will still slowly dying due to cheaters and lack of attention and updates. Unless VALVe or the TFTeam get their shit together and start doing something, ANYTHING for the game and its community (which it won't happen lol) The L4D franchise is still being ignored (as always) by VALVe and the only reason the SECOND game is still alive its 'cause of the workshop creators. Artifact was nothing but a trash cash grab """game""" and an insult to VALVe's fans. And legitimately if you think differently (and as douchey or egotistical as I may sound) you must be either stupid or you must love getting pummeled in the ass by microtransactions. And Half-Life: Alyx isn't Half-Life 3. In conclusion, making proper games again is a good step in the right direction for VALVe, but it will be a really long way for them to even redeem themselves, not only redeem to its fans but as a video game company as a whole.
In the Artifact Twitch stream times, i got to watch Tokyo Drift and Endgame in their entirety with the chat, it was geniunely a great experience and made me wish it actually was a thing.

It's not that the game wasn't fun, it's that people expected better from Valve. For a company that is famous for its ambitious 3D action games, whose reputation has since been slowly circling the drain for years due to their neglect of their classic IPs and refusal to make anything but new microtransactions, Valve needed something big to win people back over. Instead they put out a game based on one of their infamously microtransaction-based IPs, in a genre that's well known for being riddled with microtransactions.
The reaction alone probably killed any hope Artifact might have had, but on top of that Valve decided they wanted to double dip on monetization. That Artifact should cost $20 for a game in a genre that's usually free to play, AND it should also have microtransactions for buying cards. At this point the game goes from a mere blunder to an outright insult. It's like Valve saying "Oh you don't like mtx huh? You liked our old games better? Go fuck yourself. This is the way we do things now."
So it really had nothing to do with if the game was any good or not, it was just Valve pissing away the last of their good will with a move that finally convinced everyone that they're completely out of touch and no longer care about games. People expect this kind of shit from EA or Activision but they were still holding onto hope that Valve could be better. Artifact was the last straw.
Its crazy to think that Valve was the fucking bastion of gaming at one point! I used to be love them now I think they are just as bad as EA which is a shame!

Valve always approached micro transactions in a non-pay 2 win manner, CS:GO, Dota 2, TF2 all built on cosmetics (primarily), TF2 had only side grade weapons. Artifact is just a bizarre release, almost like it was released to be a flop and make point, and not make money, It it seems like the anti-thesis to TF2 F2P debut, which was about accessibility, freeriders and "whales" working together to make a healthy community.

The the thing that hurt it was that Overwatch launched while it was being made and by the time they showed it off people wouldn't stop calling it an Overwatch clone despite it being different and despite it being in development before Overwatch was announced.

That may be true, but it's not a gem if no one plays it because valve makes it cost money. People constantly overestimate how good their games are, and I don't understand why. Always these multiplayer games forcing a price upfront, then eventually go f2p when everything goes tits up and no one buys their game. Like ffs, it's a MP game, you should make sure you have a good playerbase. It's basically not salvagable at this point.
The story of Artifact's dev cycle is depressing, the death of the game was almost entirely based on the monetization and terrible first impression. More than anything else, Artifact proved that when left unchecked for over a decade, a company like Valve can become so incredibly out of touch that they became convinced they knew what their audience wanted, more than the audience itself.
The game was rushed due to pressures from Garfield & Newell, the game was lied about in the lead up marking provided by Newell himself, and most importantly, Garfield demanded the monetization strategy above all else. Richard and his longtime creative partner were fired from Valve shortly after the game's launch. The game's director, Brandon Rhienhert is reportedly still working on retooling the game for a 2.0 launch sometime in 2020.
I personally disagree with the sentiment that the game wasn't fun overall. I understand how my obvious personal bias would make such a claim laughable, but as one of those remaining 100 players, I still do wish for something to be reborn out of the basic structure built by Valve through over four years. The story of the game's original pitch, development, announcement, hype cycle, launch, and death is far more nuanced and detailed then Charlie is illustrating here, and it deserves to be told soon.

@@DeSinc My opinion on the situation is exactly this. Nobody wanted it. Nobody has much interest in it. I'm not a big fan of card games and i'm definitely not going to spend $20 on one. If it was free, then maybe, it's why I tried out Gwent, and it was fun for a bit. But there's just no way i'd spend $20 on Artifact, regardless of if it got better or not.
I *really* liked artifact. I still do. It is my favorite card game out of all of the ones I have tried. I didn't know much about it up until the month before it released , but I learned the story gradually and gradually became more disappointed with how the game was handled behind the scenes. I'm sure Garfield had some good influence on the project, but even some rando like me can tell you trying to spoonfeed a game to the Dota2 community that is majority non-free, with an entrance fee, isn't that great of an idea. Look how popular Underlords is for contrast, even though it's a totally different genre from either Dota or Artifact, plenty of people I know that like Dota casually put time into Underlords just because it's free.

I agree, core gameplay was strong. But, the creative mechanics weren't fleshed out (they assumed they'd get an expansion), and they didn't have a grind to keep people in the game. Which was beyond fucking stupid. Which is a damn shame, because the tournaments that did exist for Artifact, once you got a sense of what was going on, had a lot of skill and seemed to have solved a lot of the competitive problems that have plagued Hearthstone.
No one talks about the ability to create free tournaments. Ah, but it deserves to die. The monetization was embarrassing. Valve got too greedy and killed their own polished and well done game.

Instead of having a director or manager everyone shows their work to 10 people for each game that decide what goes in and those 10 people don't even communicate with each other. At this point it's pretty evident this business practice isn't very effective at getting anything done.
@Pr3dator2556 yeah but at the same time no content is made. I understand that devs can choose what to work on but at the same time, valve considers tf2 to be a low priority project to work on. This means that usually TFteam members are constantly moving out of the office to help on other teams but not the other way. This then means 3 days worth of work is done in 3 weeks.
Valve is also completely radio silent with tf2, never communicating at all with the community despite the constant pleading. A blog post every month or so saying ‘Hey we’re still here!’ would be great and doesn’t take much effort. Valve have gone on to say however that if support cut for tf2 they would not tell the community leaving them in limbo waiting for an update so it is very worrying. They also could add some small content updates inbetween major updates with cosmetics and maps from the community yet we’ve only got 3 cases of cosmetics since Christmas 2017, and they aren’t even valve made. It’s been almost 2 years since a major content update, that is not good for an online multiplayer game.
They probably haven’t forgotten, but it is clear that valve (not the TFteam) just do not care about tf2

In conclusion, making proper games again is a good step in the right direction for VALVe, but it will be a really long way for them to even redeem themselves, not only redeem to its fans but as a video game company as a whole.
